Cork County Council is relocating its recycling centre adjacent to Tide’s restaurant to an area on the Front Strand. Town Manager Patricia Power told Youghal’s February Town Council meeting that she and the Co. Council’s senior engineer for waste management made the decision in the wake of ongoing “very substantial abuse” of the service at Tide’s.

The ‘horseshoe’ aligned facility will now be sited at the old railway terminus (across from the promenade toilets.) It will commence operations in the first week in June and will be monitored be CCTV. Relevant signage will be erected to direct users to the site, which will accept glass, cans and plastics (clothing wasn’t mentioned). Ms. Power said its proximity to the beach would also enhance the Front Strand’s Blue Flag status. She added that Youghal is fortunate to have large recycling facility (at Foxhole), which will continue to be the main recycling centre but that the Strand facility will be more convenient for beach users.

Well that’s just a fantatic idea! Though I imagine that some local businessmen will be ’savage’ about the inconvenience of having to pay for recycling in future
