Youghal’s Windy Lane Puppeteers travel to Liverpool

Youghal’s Windy Lane Puppeteers are looking forward to performing in Liverpool European Capital Of culture 2008. The Troupe will visit The Beatles Museum and the Central Library to perform their latest production ‘Those were the days’ inspired by The Beatles music. Windy Lane Puppeteers are based in The Bawnard day care unit of St.Raphael’s Centre, Youghal.

St. Raphael’s Centre

The Bawnard Centre
Bawnard is a day care unit in St. Raphael’s, it provides the opportunity for clients to engage in core work areas together with optional activities such as art, pottery, drama, music, puppetry, literacy, numeracy and horticulture.

Windy Lane Puppeteers
As part of the Cork 2005 European Capital of Culture Programme (Culture & Health Strand) The Bawnard Centre had a puppeteer in residence, in the two years since then staff and residents have established the Windy Lane Puppeteers and have worked together with artists to explore different types of puppetry. The puppeteer troupe has chosen to specialise in the medium of shadow puppetry and have developed a three year programme which has two key objectives.

‘Those Were The Days’
Windy Lane Puppeteers are currently working on their third production ‘Those Were The Days’, 2007. Previous shows include Mr. Evil Loses Out, 2005 and Fluffy Saves the Day, 2006. The current production begins with a short and quirky piece inspired by Rolf Harris’s Two Little Boys. The remainder of the show is inspired by a myriad of characters from the Beatles Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Over 20 minutes Sergeant Pepper, Rita, Lucy, Billy Shears, Rocky Raccoon and friends conspire with elephants, octopuses, submarines and all manner of weird and wonderful characters and scenarios to entertain and delight us.

There are even cameo appearances by the Beatles themselves. Windy Lane Puppeteers aim to capture the original atmosphere and humour of the songs and to bring them to life in their own unique and innovative way. There is something here for all ages, Beatle and Non Beatle fans alike.
