Youghal Strand Area To Have No Recycle Bins In Due Course

The Youghal strand area will not have any recycling bin centre after next summer, the March Town Council meeting heard. When Cllr Barbara Murray (FG) inquired as to when the bins at the rear of Tides restaurant would be sited in the railway station area, as planned Town Clerk Liam Ryan said it would “coincide with the Blue Flag season” which runs from June to September. It will then be removed, leaving the area bereft of a recycling facility.
In the first instance, the bins are being removed from Tides on March 31st, leaving a two-month gap and what Cllr Murray described as ” a huge disservice to the people in the Strand area.” The councillor referred in particular to elderly people without transport who ‘bring bags of bottles a few times a week to Tides’ and who would about make it to the railway station but would now be expected to find their way to the recycling centre at Foxhole.
Dismissing her concern, Town Manager Patricia Power said, ‘people create waste and then want recycling facilities at every corner but don’t want to subscribe to it.’
Mr Ryan said Foxhole provides a state-of-the-art recycling facility for county council and private waste operators, which is more than what most towns have.” He added that the abuse of the facility at Tides had been “persistent.”
Nonetheless Cllr Murray asked that the bins not be removed until there was some replacement, especially as Co. County Council did not provide any glass recycle facility beyond Foxhole. Cllr Linehan Foley (FF) asked why the Strand should be an exception when many areas of the town don’t have ‘bring bins’ any more.
Mayor David savage said the bins were “the last of their kind” in the town and had become so abused that at times the people who actually need them can’t benefit from them.” He added, ” That’s not the fault of the council, that’s the fault of the people who abuse them with no regard for others.”
Cllr Murray said that had CCTV been installed, as it is due to be for the railway station site, then the bins might not need to have been removed in the first place. She then intimated she would put down a motion in due course that they be retained at the Strand post-Blue Flag season on the basis of the CCTV installation.
