Youghal Town Short Listed For Major Award

Following the submission by the Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group of a written application, an ‘on-site’ assessment by an independent panel of adjudicators appointed by Failte Ireland took place in Youghal on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th April 2008. This competition is funded and organised by Failte Ireland with support from the European Union. The ‘European Destinations of Excellence’ competition and is themed ‘Tourism & Local Intangible Heritage’ - examples of which are traditional arts, festivals, culture, crafts and sports.
The on-site assessment took the form of a presentation on the project and was delivered by Aileen Ahern, Tourism Development Officer and Catherine Desmond, of the Heritage Municipal Group.

Later that evening the panel were invited to participate in some of the ‘intangible heritage’ offerings of Youghal. These included a wonderful photographic exhibition dedicated to Eddie O’Sullivan, in the Mall Arts Centre, and traditional Irish Music sessions in both ‘The Nook’ Pub and The Red Store.
The winning destination in Ireland will receive a photo shoot of the destination, €5,000 for business development support initiatives, a certificate of achievement and an awards ceremony. In addition, the EU will offer the winning destination in its member states international promotion of the destination, an EU award ceremony during the 2008 European Tourism Forum, a DVD of the winning destination, e-marketing opportunities and participation in an EU network. Winning this award would also ensure significant positive publicity for Youghal.
The winning destination will be announced week commencing 5th May 2008.
