On Wed night last 23rd April 2008 Youghal United played their last senior game of the year. They faced Midleton in this crunch match.

Youghal needed to win in order to gain promotion next season. With a game on hand Midleton could achieve promotion with just a draw and if they won, could still win out the league and be crowned champions as well as gaining promotion. Both teams lined out under the floodlights of Ardrath park in this game, even though attendance was not large there was still a good crowd of supporters braving the stiff breeze.

Youghal kicked off the first half with the wind behind them but this seemed to cause more problems then help. With a lot of ball being played over the top the wind was taking it over the end line most of the time. Sadly for Youghal they lost a player to injury after the 10 min mark. There was very little between these two sides as the half wore on and Youghal did manage to come close to putting the Midleton keeper under pressure in the opening half. However it was Midleton who came closest to scoring but the the Youghal keeper was fast off his line to smother the ball at the Midleton forwards feet. The closing ten minutes of the half were the best for Youghal who did manage to put a of of pressure on the Midleton defence who held firm against the constant attack. At the half time break the sides were both scoreless and Midleton would have the advantage of the stiff breeze in the second half.

The second half started as the first half ended with Youghal attacking, they came close once or twice making the Midleton keeper work a little harder in this half but the best chance fell to Midleton who broke fast after an attack from Youghal and with the Youghal Keeper facing two Midleton forwards it looked like this was going to be the opening score, however luck was on the Youghal teams side and the forward kicked his shot wide. Even though they continued to attack the Youghal forwards just couldn’t manage to find the net and the game ended at full time with a nil all draw, Midleton were the happier team after the game with a chance to battle it out with Lakewood for the League title and to see who would finish 1st and 2nd but having lost that match Youghal are still in with a chance of promotion.

Senior Team
Playoffs are currently still ongoing as there was a dramatic twist in Midleton last Saturday when they failed to get anything out of their home tie with Lakewood loosing the game 1-0. The playoff ties finished like:

Lakewood 1 - 0 Youghal United.
Youghal United 0 - 0 Midleton.
Midleton 0 - 1 Lakewood.

This means that Lakewood go up to Division 1 as league Champions and leave Youghal United and Midleton to battle it out once more to decide who will join Lakewood next season. As the score lines show there was only a kick of a ball between all three teams. The Youghal Utd v Midleton playoff game is fixed for Cobh Wanderers pitch on Thursday 8th May at 18.30.

CIT 1 - 2 Youghal United.
We also had another game in between all the playoff ones when we travelled to CIT for a Beamish cup-tie. This was not a spectacular game but we came away with a win and into the quarterfinals. We were drawn at home against premier division side Douglas Hall who sit in third position in their league. This is a game we are all looking forward to and a huge test for the lads to see how far along we have come when up against top opposition. First priority is to get promoted to Division 1 and then we can have a go at Douglas Hall (game not fixed yet!).

Injured players!
We had a bit of misfortune during the playoffs when we lost key players Mark Hennessey , Robert Cronin and Alan Hennessey. We wish them a speedy recovery and hope they will be back for the big tie with Midleton.

Under 15’s
Youghal United 2 - 0 Park United.
The lads continue on winning ways with a good 2-0 win over Park Utd. Colin Sheehan and Dave Herlihy got on the score sheet here and this puts the lads in a strong position in second place with just three games remaining. We wish all concerned all the very best in the last few games. Best for Ross McCarthy and Conor Sullivan.
