Youghal Vs Midleton

Youghal traveled to Midleton on Thursday evening to play in this last game of the season. If both sides were level it was going to extra time and if still level they would finish on penalties. Either way this was the deciding game to see which team would gain promotion to play in the higher division next year. With a large crowed in attendance non stop rain both teams took to the field aware that one mistake could knock their team hopes of promotion. From the off Midleton attacked the Youghal defence with most of the play for the first 15 mins in the Youghal half. As the game moved on Youghal started to settle well and pushed forwards a lot more Youghal losing on of their defenders through injury kept battling hard, With no clear cut chances in this half both keepers had little to do but each defence worked hard. At half time the sides were still scoreless and the rain was increasing. As light was fading the referee called both teams back onto the pitch for the restart after a short half time break.

Midleton started the second half as they did the first with non stop attack into the Youghal goal. This proved to be effective as they won a free outside the box which saw the Youghal keeper having to save after the rebound. Conditions at this stage were awful with the rain increasing and light fading Midleton attacked down the left wing the ball was crossed into the box and the Midleton forward drove the ball passed the diving keeper to score. From the restart Midleton kept the pressure up and Youghal on break from defence moved the ball up the field and only for the Midleton keeper would have leveled the sides. From the resulting kick out Midleton again attacked down the left wing and another cross into the box resulted with another goal very similar to the first. Youghal then started to apply more pressure on the Midleton defence and won a corner kick. with about 20 mins left on the clock Brendan O Sullivan took the corner and in the conditions it was hard to see if the ball took a deflection or not but it ended up in the back of the Midleton net from the corner kick. Youghal continued to pile on the pressure but the Midleton defence held out till the final whistle.

Youghal played well against a team they have not beaten this year in a total of 5 outings. The management team of Michael Durkin, Anthony Horgan, Davy O Brien and Liam Ryan can only wonder what they will have to do next year. Well done to all players for their effort on the night:

Team: J.Clarkin, P.Hennessey, A.Kelly, M.Hennessey, B.Goggin, S.Ryan, D.Hennessey, S.Kenneally ,B.O’Sullivan, P.Moylan, C.Hennessey,

Subs: P.Kelly, M.Clohsey, R.Cronin, A.Hennessey.

Thanks must go to all the supporters who traveled to Midleton and who have traveled to all the Youghal games this year.
