This course is organised by The East Cork Youth Film Project, run by Cork Film Centre and funded by The Arts Office of Cork County Council and East Cork Area Development Ltd.

Being involved in the arts is hugely beneficial for young people; they develop confidence, focus and concentration; learn about working in teams; develop their creativity and communication skills and, most importantly, enjoy themselves. Participation in youth arts can also be a direct pathway for young people into professions in the arts.

All of this is widely recognised nowadays in Ireland, by government, local authorities, youth organisations, schools and community organisations. In East Cork there are some great opportunities for young people to engage in the arts; The Y Factor in Youghal, Glanmire House of Rock, The East Cork Film Project, Youth Choirs and dance groups are all very successful. However there is much to be done!

Benefits of friendships, positive experiences of working together and being involved in a creative activity which provides an alternative to hanging around should be an option for all young people. Arts activities such as music, dance, film and visual art are amongst the most popular interests for young people. The resources to meet this interest and demand are still lacking at local level. The challenge is now, in East Cork, to develop and expand on the current arts initiatives that have been developed here, to bring youth arts to more young people.

Are YOU a young person living in East Cork, involved in an artistic activity or with an interest which is not currently being met? Are you willing to contribute to future plans for Youth Arts in East Cork?

Are YOU a parent/ a teacher / an artist, living/working in this area, who sees the potential and would like to see more opportunities for young people to participate in an artistic activity?

East Cork Area Development Ltd. in partnership with Cork County Council Arts Office has taken up the challenge. A plan for youth arts requires direct community imput. Do YOU have a contribution to make to an audit of existing youth arts provision in East Cork? Some of the questions to be addressed are:

This inventory will provide an invaluable tool for those involved in arts, youth work, planning and funding and most importantly will help strengthen arts provision to young people in this area.

This process will look to develop a network group/ steering committee providing guidance and public participation. This will be made up of local experts representing a cross section of stakeholders, young people, youth workers and artists from within the geographical area serviced by ECAD, and involving direct community imput as well as funders and arts providers. Do YOU want to have a say in what plans are made for youth arts in your community?

Then go on take the challenge! Contact Mary Mc Grath at marywhitegate {at} eircom(.)net
