Morrissey At The Marquee Cork City
Morrissey At The Marquee Cork City

Love him or loathe him once you accept Morrissey into your heart you can always forgive him, and there is always something to forgive. Such is the treasure of his back catalogue you don’t know which gem you want to choose. All Morrissey gigs are tinged with regret and this performance at the Marquee on Thursday evening was no exception, only because he can’t possibly play all your favourites.

A people pleasing dynamo he is not, that’s Bruce’s job. How many gigs have you gone to where the performer can hold the crowd in his hand singing ‘life is a pigsty’? Morrissey’s ambivalent love affair with himself and his audience was captured in essence when he called us ’sophisticated’ and then asked ‘what, what did I do now? I’m just trying to sing a song.’ It was all taken in good dark humour. For those with Read more

Bonfire Night Sarsfield Tce, Youghal. 1983
Bonfire Night ‘The Plot’ Sarsfield Tce. Youghal (1983)

Bonfire Night is an annual celebration held on the 23rd June (St. John’s Eve). The celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country and centered around the summer solstice. The custom dates back to pagan times. Bonfire Night was always celebrated in Youghal with bonfires in different parts of the town but these customs and traditions are largely ignored nowadays. The embers of this long tradition have become a burning or more accurately a non-burning issue. The photograph shows Read more

Millennium Park playground

Parents will be pleased to know that repair work on the Millennium Park playground is likely to begin shortly. The facility has been closed since early in the year, as the Council seeks €50,000 funding to undertake the work. ‘We hope the money likely to come on stream imminently and the work can begin,’ says Town Clerk Liam Ryan. ‘It should be open before summer ends.’

As well as repairs to the playground structures (decapitated horses and half-eaten swings -kids tsk!) the chief outlay focuses on a new surface. The present tattered tiling system is to be replaced by a different system of Read more

Youghal Fisherman Barry Clohessy

Local fisherman Barry Clohessy is outraged with the Department of Marine for ignoring the seal damage to his livelihood. Seals are a protected species in this country but the damage they are doing to nets and the living of the local fishermen is shocking.

Since 2007 Salmon fishing has been banned in these parts because stocks were down. Now the seals that used to feed on the salmon in the nets are now moving inshore and attacking the monkfish caught in the nets.

“The seals are ruining inshore fishing,” says Barry “they are feeding on monkfish, pollack and any kind of whitefish because of the ban on salmon fishing. The seals used to feed on the salmon in the nets but Read more
