Cork County Fire and Building Control Dept. have engaged in a Public Awareness Programme on Fire Safety within the Home with selected groups of national schools in the Cork County area. This is part of the Community Fire Safety Campaign being undertaken by the Fire Dept. and follows a series of successful presentations undertaken with active retirement groups during the winter months.

The project consisted of a presentation by local community firefighters to sixth and fifth class students on the different aspects of fire safety within the home. The students were then given a homework assignment and were subsequently marked on their assignments with the top three in each class selected for special recognition as Junior Fire Wardens. The purpose of the exercise was to make children aware of the potential dangers associated with the occurrence of fire in the home. Particular emphasis was made, from a Fire Safety Point of view, on the Golden Rules as outlined below.
a) Survey your home to ensure that it is Fire Safe
b) Install smoke alarms in your home to give you an early warning
c) Do a nighttime check of your home before going to bed.
d) Have a suitable escape plan available in an emergency.
It is hoped that children and their parents will benefit from this project and that it will assist the Fire Department in both the reduction of fatalities and fire damage to property.
The Fire Department would like to thank all those students and teachers who participated in this exercise for the benefit of the community as a whole.
