The 108 year old sailing schooner Kathleen & May is expected to visit Youghal on Wednesday 30th at 4pm and depart on Friday 1st August at 6pm. weather conditions permitting. The schooner will then return to her home port in Bideford Devon.
Once owned by the Fleming family of Youghal who gave her the name Kathleen & May. This last remaining wooden hull topsail schooner is once more plying her trade as a merchantman. On return from the maritime festival in Brest in France, she collected a consignment of 30.000 bottles of wine for shipment to Dublin. The five-day journey heralds a milestone in the history of this vessel; the last time she carried a cargo was nearly 50 years ago. Is this a return to wind power as an alternative to oil? Many environmentalists believe so.

Ken Lavan
Ken Lavan has been added to the Fine Gael ticket to contest Youghal’s local election next year. The auctioneer and Care Trust representative was selected at a recent branch meeting and will campaign alongside two incumbent party colleagues, Town and County Councillor Barbara Murray and Michael Beecher. It will be the 39 year-old’s first election campaign, having joined the party last year.
Ken’s candidacy may bring something of a west Waterford influence to the chamber come next June. His uncle is Dungarvan solicitor Joe Lavan and his aunt is Lavinia Lavan, proprietor of Lavinia’s Boutique on Main Street. Furthermore, he recently married Kilrossanty girl Karen Walsh.
Those who remember Ken’s dad, Paddy Lavan, may be surprised to see him in the Blueshirt camp. The late and legendary Youghal solicitor was a Fine Fail stalwart. However Ken’s mother Ann, nee Crowley, is a Fine Gael girl from Read more

The economy may be losing its drive but staff at Lismore’s Social Welfare office certainly did their best to restore it. The two female employees were unable to access the building due to a faulty door lock on arriving for work. Showing the spirit of innovation that once made this country the envy of Europe, one of the girl’s promptly threw open the rear of her silver hatchback and faster than you could say, ‘where’s me credits? business went mobile.
Astonished by-passers couldn’t believe their eyes as, with the brakes well and truly on the economy, it appeared the wheels might be about to come off the State Social Welfare system as well. “There were people dotted around the street waiting their turn,” observed one local businessman. “There even had a cup of coffee on the roof!”
Fearing another government steering committee had taken to the road, another observer quipped, “I know Mary Hanafin wants to cut down on dole fraud, but this is a bit much! At first I thought it was someone selling stuff and Read more
