Neil Young At The Marquee Cork City-June 30th 2008

“Tonight’s the Night” was certainly the night at the Cork City Showgrounds, as Neil Young took to the stage for a pulsating two hours of pure rock and roll live from The Marquee. From start to finish this seasoned hard man of music stunned a packed audience into ecstasy with a virtuoso performance of unmeasurable depth. This was vintage Neil Young.

Opening with an electrifying version of “Love and Only Love”, he didn’t let up ’till two hours later with a mind-blowing version of John Lennon’s “A Day in the Life”. In between, we were treated to some of the greatest renditions of Young classics as could be heard. From “No Hidden Path” to the tour de force of the evening “Words”, this now 63-year-old Canadian blasted his audience into submission.

‘Forever Young’

I have always felt that Cork audiences were the best in the world and last evening’s participation proved this yet again. To Young’s obvious delight, they sang along, pitch-perfect, to every song. From Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” to “Oh, Lonesome Me”, “The Needle and the Damage Done” and that old Young standard “Heart of Gold”, they sang in unison like an enormous choral backing group.

Young was ably supported by a wonderful backing band. With Rick Rosas (Crazy Horse) pounding out heart-stopping bass lines, his old sparring partner from “Harvest” Ben Keith on rhythm and pedal steel guitars, his wife Peggy on backing vocals, Young proved yet again why his peers hold him in such high regard. From Dylan to Morrison, Clapton to The Band, they all have one thing in common. They love Neil Young.

With that distinctive falsetto voice purer now than ever, we left that gig spiritually uplifted. In a world often depressing and always unforgiving, for two hours he made us forget our troubles. He took us on a journey and dropped us off happy.
Thanks for a wonderful evening Neil……. may you stay “Forever Young”

What a cracker of a concert…..neil young will never fade,he just keeps getting better. I sure was a happy camper. Keep on rocking!!

As time passes, this event will gain ever more significance for us 5,000+ who were privileged to be in the company of one of the most important and influential musicians EVER. Many of us who were at the Marquee on Monday night last will never see him again; some of us may travel great distances in the future to see him. Maybe he will return to Cork some time. One thing is for certain, he gave us memories on Monday night that will remain with us forever. What a performer; what a musician; what a man. Thank you NEIL YOUNG.

Good review sarah/Noel and great pics young Hussey!!!

What a night,This man just gets better,This was my 4th time at a Neil Young gig and for me probably the best
The energy coming off that stage by a man in his 5th decade of performing must give us all hope..Great to see such a Youghal presence there on the night….NEIL YOUNG in Cork????Did it really happen….Heres to the next time
And keep up the good work here at youghalonline
Mick

Great gig, ‘Words’ was the highlight for me, ‘Love and only love was amazing too, no-one can create such a unique howling noise like Neil. Sound was great. New songs old songs all classics, such a sustainable career he has had. Remember, if you search hard enough you can unearth unreleased gems like ‘Interstate’ and ‘Grey riders’ plus the great unreleased vinyl album ‘times fades away’.
3rd time seeing him, getting better i think.
By the way when did Rick Rosas replace Billy Talbot in Crazy horse?

Yes Florence, you are perfectly right.Of course Rick Rosas was never a member of Crazy Horse.Silly mistake, maybe I got carried away on the emotion of the occasion.Certainly reminded me of Billy though. My apologies to both you and Billy, not to mention Rick. All the best,Noel.

No hassle Noel, don’t think you were the only one who
got carried away with the emotion of such a great show,
RITFW!.
Keep an eye out for ‘Time fades away’ tracks
on youtube in the near future.
Looking forward to the archives.
