Lights Out!…Camera!…Action!

First Ever Lights Out! National Film Festival for Young People Brings an Exciting Programme of Films to Youghal 24th-26th July

Lights Out! Is a new type of film festival for young people dedicated to providing 6-16 year olds with the best films from Ireland and around the world.
Films with a diverse programme of animation, fantasy and live action, will deal with issues affecting young people today.
Youghal is the exclusive location for Lights Out! in Cork, chosen specifically because of its ‘Rapid’ status. Screenings in Youghal will take place at the Regal Cineplex and Mall Arts Centre in Youghal and will showcase plenty for young film enthusiasts to get excited about this summer.

Programming has been developed with the help of young people; posters and artwork for it has been driven by the decisions of young people; and it will be attended by young people.

Cork was well represented on the programming panel by two young film buffs Bobby (15) from Youghal and David (16) from Midleton.
Lights Out! Patron Kathryn McKiernan, from RTÉ’s The Den, said ‘I believe Lights Out! is a wonderful opportunity for young people (and me) to explore and experience the fascinating world of film and storytelling. The festival has been specially designed with the help of our Young Consultants Panel which enabled young people to have an active part in the planning of all aspects of the festival’.

Lights Out! in Youghal will kick off with Azur and Asar: The Princes’ Quest (GEN), a magical animated tale of friendship from France. Children of all ages will also enjoy Razzle Dazzle (PG), a spectacular spoof-documentary comedy about an Australian dance troupe aiming for the top.

For older children there will be a chance to catch young Kilkenny filmmaker David O’Reilly’s off-the-wall animation in Son of Rambow (12A) about two friends making their own sequel to Rambo. Also for older fans of animation and graphic novels there will be a chance to catch the autobiographical story of growing up in Iran and Europe, Persepolis (12A), from Marjane Strapani.

There will be a sneak preview of a big upcoming Irish film release, 32A (15A), the story of a young teenager growing up (and getting her first bra) in 1970’s Dublin, starring Aidan Quinn and Orla Brady.

The highlight of the entire festival promises to be Youghal Young Film Makers who will hold a Film Gala of seven short films at 7.00pm in the Mall Arts Centre. Admission is free and with such local talent it promises to be a truly entertaining and inspiring evening of top quality film.

Lights Out! is an initiative of the Irish Film Institute and is supported by lead partner, the Ombudsman for Children’s Office as well as RTÉ, The Ticket, The Irish Film Board and The Arts Council. In Cork support is provided by Youghal Town Council and Cork County Council
