The Fairtrade committee comprises of Food Co-Op Cumann Na Daoine, Mack Dempsey, Kitty Griffin, Anne O’ Connor, Stacey Quinlivan. Town Councillors Michelle Hennessey, Sandra Mclellan, and Michael Beecher and committee member Yvonne Alvarez.
The committee has been convened to help Youghal to become a Fairtrade Town. Fairtrade is about giving power to the developing countries. It’s about strengthening their hand in trading relationships so they can earn a living and have access to education and healthcare.
The committee is delighted to announce that Youghal has met the criteria to become a fairtrade town. Fairtrade Dublin will monitor the town for three months before granting the town the fairtrade status. The committee would like to thank the businesses, restaurants, hotels, shops, for stocking fairtrade produces and their customers for their on going support.
If any other business would like to take part in the fairtade campaign contact Stacey at Cumann Na Daoine 024-91900.

As someone who lives in a certified Fairtrade borough in England all I can say is having the status really does boost people’s understanding of what Fairtrade is. Since I operate a fashion label that specialises in Fairtrade cotton, I regularly take part in local events. I’m always surprised to come across people who have no idea what it is! At least Fairtrade Fortnight and similar events creates a platform to have a dialogue with people about it–that what you shop for is a form of voting and real change!
