Two Youghal Town Councillors warned the September council meeting that the entrance/exit at Quarryvale Estate to the main road presents a “lethal” road hazard. -Christy Parker Reports

Both councillors had been approached repeatedly by residents of the estate. Drivers travelling towards Youghal Bridge, regularly park on the left roadside -often by way of visiting Crowley’s shop- and thus interfere with motorists’ view of speeding traffic as they negotiate onto the main road.

Cllr. Linehan Foley suggested “a yellow box or bollards” be installed to address “a tragedy “waiting to happen.” Cllr Michelle Hennessy concurred. She reminded Town Engineer Paul Murray that he had visited the area last year, following which Read more

Youghal Publicans show their disillusionment with the price hike

Publicans in East Cork are seeking national support in a protest action against price increases imposed by suppliers Diageo. The vintners have begun withdrawing draught Carlsberg from their premises in protest and are also removing the company’s Smirnoff vodka and other products and advertising from prominent display. Guinness and Baileys are amongst other Diageo lines.

The action follows Diageo’s decision to increase their supply costs by 5c per pint, resulting in a 10c increase at the tap. It is the second increase since last March. With October’s budget expected to add another 10c, the publicans fear consumers cannot absorb the costs. Rival brewery Heineken, which has also agreed a Read more

Pot Luck

Pot Luck

Youghal Town Clerk Liam Ryan warned the September council meeting to bear in mind that money is the oil that turns most wheels when next year’s budget meeting comes round. The official had listened to a long litany of requested remedies for maladies like cavernous potholes, long grass and dangerously unmarked roads, etc, etc, when he broached the crux of most arguments. ‘At the last two budget meetings, expenditure budgets were cut to the core in order to minimise rates increases,’ he said, before elaborating that, €50,000 had been provided for ongoing maintenance work in the 2008 budget, which was already spent. “Unless you provide substantial funds for ongoing road and footpath maintenance, then there is nothing we can do about several of the issues that you have raised.”

The fiscal sky grew darker as Mr. Ryan pointed out that ‘the Dept of Environment had already issued formal letters requesting the local authority to cut expenditure and payroll costs by at least 3% on last year’s budget.’  Cllr Barbara Murray responded that Read more
