Council Park Their Resistance Over Bus Stop

Youghal Town Council’s September meeting rejected a motion from Cllr Barbara Murray to liaise with Bus Eireann with a view to relocating the bus stop at the Fair Field the width of the footpath back, to facilitate traffic flow when a bus is parked. Presently, buses cause visual impediment to drivers exiting the car park and also slow traffic flow.
Cllr Sammy Revins abstained from voting as it he had previously tabled a successful motion to have the stop relocated to New Catherine Street (opp. Back of AIB), precisely for the reasons now being advocated by Cllr Murray. This initiative has since come a cropper following a complaint from an elderly user that the location is desolate and possibly dangerous. Bus Eireann agreed.

Cllr Murray said she had supported that motion but subsequently agreed with the complainant. There persists however, a degree of umbrage -sometimes aired, sometimes dormant- within the chamber that Bus Eireann, having agreed to move the stop to new Catherine Street, has no business reversing the decision without the council’s approval. Cllr Michael Beecher supported Cllr Murray’s motion but all others said ‘nay.’ The council chamber can be lonely as a relocated bus stop sometimes…
