Some 30 years after the last train departed, Youghal Town Councillor David Savage wants Iarnrod Eireann to ‘cut the grass” and, by inference, clean up the town’s disused railway station. The councillor described the area as “Youghal’s most derelict site” at the September council meeting. He said any owner of such a site in town would be held accountable but Iarnrod Eireann had “got off scot free for years.” The councillor said he knew letters had been dispatched to the company in the past “but they have effectively done nothing for us.”

Cllr Savage added that during the summer several break-ins had occurred in McCurtainstown, where some houses back onto the station area. “They all came from the rear of the houses and so the residents are pleading with the council to write to Iarnrod Eirean or even send one of our own men if necessary out there to cut the grass,” he concluded.
