Amnesty Cork are organising a street action this Saturday 18th October, beside the Peace Park on Grand Parade. We will be asking members of the public to support the movement by standing up and reading a pledge. Photos will be taken and the number of participants will be counted. Stand Up events will run simultaneously across the globe and the total number of people will be tallied and entered in the Guiness Book of Records if last year’s record number of participants is beaten.
“This year we want to get a higher number for the Guiness Book of Records.” Advises the Amnesty Cork Secretary Maria Belen Menendez “Anybody who is available is very welcome to help”.
Last year, more than 43 million people in 87 countries participated in the STAND UP action. It was the official Guinness World Record for the most number of people ever to stand up for a cause.
People worldwide are being asked to physically stand up as a representation of their commitment to fighting global poverty. Thousands of events are being held across the world. Equally important is that everyone takes a concrete action with a political impact to ensure their politicians are held accountable for their promises to poor people.
“This is the most staggering growing movement of people campaigning on a single issue in the world today but 2008 must see a change of gear. The millennium goals were a roadmap out of the mess that sees 50 thousand people die every day of poverty-related illnesses in a world of plenty but progress is shamefully slow in most countries. Joining the call to action in the months ahead is the best way to influence those with the power to change this. It doesn’t matter if you attend an event involving thousands of people, or a morning tea in your workplace - your action will count.” said Sylvia Borren, Co-Chair GCAP(Global Call to Action against Poverty).
