The graduation ceremony for the Back to Education Initiative students from the East Cork Further Education and Youthreach Centre for the FETAC May 2008 assessments took place at the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal.

One of Broadway’s most hilarious shows, ‘Guys and Dolls’ has been described as’the perfect musical comedy’. It is based on a Damon Runyon short story, which describes the unlikely romance between a pure-at-heart member of the Salvation Army and a slick Broadway gambler.  The show’s second romantic storyline involves Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide, who have been engaged for fourteen years! Nathan organises the ‘oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York’ and Adelaide is the main attraction at the Hot-Box nightclub.

‘Guys and Dolls’ is chock-full of great characters – tough, lovable and very, very funny.

Members of Cork Amnesty Group got tremendous support on Patrick St. today (Saturday 10th Jan.) for their petition to end civilian casualties in Gaza and Israel. Amnesty have also called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian aid, such as water, food, fuel and medical supplies to treat the injured.

Amnesty International has urged the UN Security Council to demand that Israel, Hamas and Palestinian armed groups observe an immediate truce in Gaza to allow desperately needed humanitarian assistance to the beleaguered civilian population, evacuation of the wounded and safe refuge for civilians wishing to flee the conflict zone.

“Civilians in Gaza are trapped in an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe, and need immediate respite,” said Malcolm Smart, Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme. Read more

Singer Songwriter Martin Murphy, a native of Youghal (Friar St.) now living in Cork has released his much-awaited new CD, ‘Cradle of the South’. The latest album is the fourth that Martin has released to date. It’s a collection of songs based on the town of Youghal, which in itself was unusual for Martin to base an album on one area or topic as his past releases cover many topics and places of interest. This time round however Martin concentrated on his native Youghal for inspiration. With songs like Youghal Bus, Moll Goggin’s Corner and Suddenly last summer, just some of the songs from this 12-track album, it’s easy to see how the writer was inspired. Read more

FELLING of mature diseased trees is ongoing in the College Gardens Youghal following a detailed survey that revealed some of the trees to be dangerous. Some of the beech trees were found to be riddled with a fungal infection and felling is currently underway. The survey took place late in September and removal action commenced shortly afterwards. In total, 11 mature trees will be felled and 6 more are subject to further internal and aerial investigations. 7 trees require remedial action, pollarding, thinning or the removal of dead wood.

These actions will occur in 2009 and the issue of replanting will be addressed at that stage. Preliminary discussions have already taken place about the species mix for replanting, but final decisions have yet to be taken.Some of the sections taken from 10 meters above ground level showed the fungal infection in an advanced state and the danger to public safety and the town walls was apparent.
Of the four Lime trees surveyed, two had major cavities at ground level. One was felled and the other will be pollarded. An Evergreen Oak in the churchyard standing at over 50 feet tall will be reduced in size by 20% and reshaped. Read more

The Sex and the City fundraiser for the local charity organisation Meals on Wheels was a spectacular success. This unique event was hosted by local businesses.The proceeds from the night were presented to Tina Coleman representing the Meals on Wheels organisation.

The evening of style and glamour started with a champagne reception, cocktails and food while the movie Sex in the City was shown on the screens. This was followed by a fashion show with models from the Lockdown Agency including former Miss Cork Sarah O Connell and Jean Kenny the current Miss Cork and of course local models all showcasing the autumn and winter fashions from the four local boutiques. Pictured are the Youghal Men from the 98 Infantry Battalion deployed on the European Union Force Mission ( EUFOR-TCHAD/RCA) to Chad-Central Africa under command of Lt. Colonel Kieran Brennen (brother of GAA President Nicky Brennan). Their mission began last September to contribute to the protection of civilians in danger, particularly refugees and displaced persons. They help to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and the free movement of humanitarian personnel by helping to improve security in the area.
