Chinese New Year celebrated at An Naionra-Youghal
Posted on Sunday, February 1st, 2009It was a busy time at An Naíonra (Irish medium playschool) over the past week or so. Staff and children were busy celebrating Chinese and Vietnamese New Year, which fell on Monday 26th of January. This year is the year of the Ox. Photo: Michael Hussey (YoughalOnline.com)

Children were involved in setting up a cultural display table where various items relating to China and Vietnam were displayed. These included lanterns, chopsticks, food items, animals and related pictures of the ox, panda, kites and bicycles. There was also a playdough session where the children made a fantastic attempt at the Great Wall Of China!
Although the Naíonra is an Irish medium playschool, they welcome and celebrate all cultures. This year the playschool is lucky enough to have 3 children from China and Vietnam attending, so great help was given to staff from the parents. The children wore traditional clothing and looked an-dheas ar fad! The children also took part in a food morning where they got to taste rice, noodles and prawn crackers, all with the help of chopsticks! Bhí an-spóirt acu!

Once all the excitement of this special new year was coming to an end, the children were already starting their next project…..St. Brigid’s crosses!
