Conor Lovett, directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett, will perform a new adaptation of MOBY DICK in a Gare St Lazare Players production touring 28 Irish venues in April and May 2009. In a tribute to the great film version by director John Huston the show will have it’s premiere at The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal Co. Cork which served as the location for New Bedford in the 1956 movie MOBY DICK starring Gregory Peck. Considered by many to be the greatest American novel, MOBY DICK follows the exploits of Captain Ahab on his journey of revenge against the great white whale Moby Dick as told by the young adventurer Ishmael who signs up on Ahab’s ship ‘The Pequod’. One of Ireland’s best known touring theatre companies, Gare St Lazare Players are renowned for their Beckett prose productions such as Molloy and First Love. Read more

Members of the Youghal Adult Education Network are delighted to join in the celebrations during the 2009 Cork Lifelong Learning Festival with 2 days packed with free workshops, talks, displays and performances for young and old.  Now in its 6th year the festival has mainly been limited to Cork city – but this year Youghal is taking the initiative to bring the festival to Cork County.

On Tuesday March 31 the focus is on the East Cork Further Education and Youthreach Centre,  with a programme which includes briefing sessions on how adults return to education, as well as hands on workshops in beauty therapy, ceramics, organic gardening and family learning.  While visiting the centre why not visit the information displays and enjoy the art exhibition, or enjoy coffee and scones in the morning prepared by Youthreach students. On Thursday April 2 the festival moves to Cumann na Daoine’s new building on Catherine St.  Call in any time from 10am – 2pm to visit displays of art and craft as well as information stands from UCC, FAS, Pobalscoil na Trionoide and the VEC adult guidance service.  Chat with fellow learners and members of Cumann na Daoine’s many groups, or join in free workshops on paper flower making or cake decorating.  The afternoon Features performances from the Windy Lane puppet theatre.

Kino Korner is a mini film festival which will feature screenings of short films of community interest – many linked to Youghal.   Kino Korner films will be shown in both venues on March 31 and April 2. Read more

1) Fifteen (22-37) of the 37 spaces available will be designated for all     residential permit holders (only) in the town, with no time restraints. Spaces will be signed and coded.

2) Spaces 1-22 will be for general public utility, with a 3-hour parking limit. Spaces will again be signed and coloured.

Cork County Council engineers are to re-inspect a longstanding viewing area overlooking the entrance to Youghal harbour as “a matter of urgency.” The area, at Moll Goggins Corner, was closed off as a precaution following an earlier inspection last October. That report indicated “no immediate danger” of the structure collapsing.

However, since then the situation has “deteriorated dramatically,” according to Youghal and Cork County Councillor Barbara Murray, who brought the decline to the attention of the County Council. The viewing is sited over rocks that lead onto the beach, from where Cllr Murray noticed the increased erosion while walking her dog. “Its quite frightening to view it from that angle and my big fear would be that it would collapse and take some of the footpath and roadway with it,” she said.
