An intimate ambience prevailed throughout and commenced with a talk on writing’s challenges, peaks and troughs from Mairead O’Driscoll. The Offaly-born public health nurse is the author of a much-acclaimed debut novel ‘Pebble Cove.’ There was an East Coast twang to the readings from Tess Maguire, whose family moved to New York when she was four. Now living in east Cork, she is best known for having penned ‘the Sunbeam Girls’ and ‘Good Sisters.’ Tess’s wry and often ribald text, laden with brisk and abundant humour, had her listeners both spellbound and smiling. Four-time novelist and poet Mary O’Sullivan from Crosshaven read from her considerable collection of work. Her tender observations on life’s fickle and flow as experienced by the recognisable perceptions of her characters easily struck a chord.  She spoke too of the torture and thrill of writing a novel: ‘You reach the end, only to start at the very beginning again and rewrite.”

Part 2 opened with Youghal journalist and sometimes poet Christy Parker. The writer’s comic verse from his collection, ‘Don’t Step in the Poems,’ brought rollicking laughter as he proved nostalgic for public toilets ‘murdered’ by Youghal Council and the desperate dilemma of two dogs whose street copulation goes terribly wrong! The evening will feature two guest speakers -Diarmuid Cronin, Cork-based Community Alert Development Officer and Denis Kelly, development officer with Muintir na Tire. The Community Alert initiative has emerged in the wake of increasing and abysmal social disorder in the town. A nadir was reached last Halloween when property and individuals were attacked in a night now notorious in the public conscious. Several exploratory meetings, with Garda contribution, were held prior to an official committee being formed.
Local councillor Michael Beecher is the group treasurer. He affords credit for the group’s establishment to Chairman Moss Lynch who, “initiated the idea and pursued it determinedly.” Vice Chairman is Johnny Dempsey and Secretary is Pa Forrest. Read more

The works went on display on February 24th, earning highly appreciative responses prior to the official opening on Friday afternoon next (March 6th) when Arts Minister Martin Cullen will join the artists in delivering an address. The exhibition is an extension of their women’s initial ‘Exploration’ theme, which was launched on a national touring platform in 1995. Exploration II travelled to Adelaide, Australia in 1996 and a year later Gothenburg, Sweden hosted a further instalment. Both artists have established international credentials. Sinead, who now lives in Killeagh, says the pictures and photographs “follow the water’s natural progression as it cascades from the mountains to the sea.” Both artists retain a ‘fascination with nature” and while travelling extensively in pursuit of its inspiration, are inevitably attracted to their roots. “It may be something to do with childhood,” muses Sinead. “Climbing Mahon falls and appreciating the wonder that lies there is timeless. I would hope our work would inspire others to do likewise.” Read more

The evening, organised by Youghal Baptist Church, features Canadian Minister John Stephenson, who lost his wife and only daughter in a car accident in 1993. He subsequently wrote Through Tears to Triumph a book that has been widely acclaimed as providing solace and support through the bereavement process as well as other types of loss. Born on a farm in Toronto, John initially worked for Kodak but felt a void in his life. On reading the New Testament, along with a friend’s guidance, he choose to become baptised into the Baptist Church. He soon attended Bible College in London (Ontario) from where he graduated in 1962. He is also a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Theology graduate from Canadian universities. John was a pastor in Ontario for 29 years before, in 1991, joining the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE) prior to serving as a church planter in Cape Town. While there, his wife and daughter were killed, two years later. John remained in South Africa until 1996, after which, as part of his healing process, he began writing Through Tears to Triumph.
