The ESB confirmed that 3,700 jobs will be created in the areas of wind energy, smart networks and smart metering, electric vehicles, construction and energy servicing. Mr. Harty said: “Going green saves money and creates jobs. Today’s announcement is proof of this. As an island nation we can use our vast wind and wave resources to power our homes and our cars. In order to do this, we need to install and upgrade our electricity network in a smart way – and this is where many of the jobs announced by the ESB will come from.”
“The Green Party in Government has taken Irish energy in a new direction. Our initiatives such as smart meters, smart networks, electric cars, renewable energy, green technology and home insulation are bearing fruit. Now we must look at how these jobs can be created and Read more

An Bord Pleanala has upheld an appeal against planning permission for a major retail development at the former Murray Kitchen’s site in Mill Road, Youghal. The so-called ‘Dunne’s Stores’ proposal had received planning permission from Youghal Town Council, who rezoned the four-acre site, paving the way for a massive 9,500 sq metre retail, sports & leisure and  medical/health centre. The site’s capacity measures more than the combined existing retail space, Tescos included, in the town. By Christy Parker Photo: Michael Hussey (YoughalOnline.com)

Bord Pleanala Refuse Youghal's 'Dunnes Stores Development.'

Killarney-based Galvin Developments Ltd., who bought the site, had intimated that Dunne’s Stores would provide anchor tenancy on 6,000 sq metres with the remaining space occupied by up to twelve ancillary units. The application also provided for 250 parking spaces.

Objectors to the proposal were Finbarr & Anthony Russell, RGDATA, Ken Brookes and Diarmuid Keogh. The Bord upheld the objections on the grounds that, contrary to the 2009-15 Town Development Plan, it would ‘adversely affect the vitality and viability of the old town centre, its heritage character and its envisaged role as the primary commercial, retail, civic and symbolic centre of the town.’ Read more inside Read more

Youghal’s Lifeboat Station is one of the oldest stations in Ireland as it dates back to 1839. The first lifeboat was funded by Youghal’s townspeople at a cost of £76 to build and put into service. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (R.N.L.I) took over the running of Youghal’s Lifeboat in 1857. Today, the station operates one of the fastest and most modern lifeboats in the RNLI’s fleet, The Atlantic 75 Class lifeboat. This boat is a rigid inflatable, 7.5 metres in length, carries a crew of  three and can reach a top speed of 32 knots. This lifeboat is named the Patricia Jennings and this new boat has only been on station at Youghal since September 2002. Read more

“They” say that Youghal is the second oldest town in Ireland, next to Kinsale.   That’s as may or may not be, but nobody can deny that Youghal is steeped in history, is home to ancient buildings and places, and has housed many famous – and infamous – people over the past hundreds of years.  Youghal 2009 is not so very different to those days.   We still have our buildings and ancient monuments, and we also have our people.  People like Maurice Ahern, Fr. Keane, Michael Hackett, Nooch Kenefick, John Russell and, of course, John Stack. Report Denise Fitzgerald/Photo: Michael Hussey (YoughalOnline.com)

What these people have in common, apart from being Youghal locals, is that they are all writers who have had their books printed.   John Stack recently celebrated his very successful launch of Ships of Rome, to the delight of all in the area, and Maurice Ahern, who is very well known by all, and sports a large extended family and many fans, launched his new book  “When the Tide Turns”.   The launch took place in Cree’s Newsagency in Main Street, Youghal and Read more
