Despite the fact that the importance of the Cork and Queenstown line overshadowed that of its predecessor, a steady service was maintained to Youghal until the close of its passenger station in 1963, with up to five trains running from the city on a daily basis. However, it was during the summer months that activity on the Youghal line was at its peak, with several extra trains added to transport thousands of day trippers to the seaside. These excursions are immortalised in the traditional song “Johnny Jump Up”:

The final days of the Cork to Youghal railway came with the emergence of Córas Iompair Éireann (C.I.E.) in 1945, which had absorbed the Great Southern Railway (GSR), which had in turn taken over from the GSWR in 1924. The decision was taken by C.I.E. to close the passenger lines between Cobh and Youghal on 4 February 1963. However, goods traffic continued to work the line until June 1978, while beet was transported by rail at harvest time until 1981. – Research K.McCarthy/M.Hussey (YoughalOnline.com) – Photo: Courtesy Cork County Library

In spite of local dismay, the Sunday summer rail excursions to Youghal were abandoned by C.I.E. in 1982 due to a shortage of rolling stock and the continued expense of maintaining the railway line. The last trains to travel along the Youghal line were Read more
Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley has raised the possibility of the Youghal rail link being reopened during a meeting with An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD. Cllr. Linehan Foley raised the subject with the Taoiseach during his recent visit to Midleton. Photo Michael Hussey (YoughalOnline.com)

Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley
Speaking about the meeting, Cllr. Linehan Foley said, “The Taoiseach was in Midleton to hear a presentation about the benefits to the town and the region of the new Midleton rail line and how this piece of infrastructure will lead to more investment and economic opportunities for the area. While he was in town I managed to grab a quick meeting with him to discuss the issue of a rail link to Youghal.” “I explained how the people of Youghal have been campaigning for this line for many years. I outlined how it would be of huge benefit to the town and would help create jobs for the area and bring more economic investment to Youghal.”
“The Taoiseach seemed amenable to the idea of a Youghal rail link. He said that extensions were regularly being added to existing rail lines and that a link to Youghal wasn’t something he had any objections to. He indicated he would look into the subject further and that if the economic conditions allowed it was something that the Government may be prepared to support.”
“Obviously I was delighted to hear that directly from the Taoiseach. Everyone used to use the old Youghal rail link travelling to and Read more

If you asked Barack Obama or Dustin the Turkey should it be reopened I am sure they would no objection either!
The pertinent question is whether it WILL be opened by this government. The people of Youghal deserve more than a half hearted, throw away election promise. Bertie Ahern gave us enough of those! We want specifics and with that in mind I have written to the Rail Procurement Agency and CEO of Irish Rail to ask for a policy statement and timeframe by which it will be opened… Read more

Information is wanted on the whereabouts of “Maurice”- The Yellow Man. Maurice would be well known to anybody who travels down the Lower Glanmire road, Cork City.

Maurice is missing- Have you seen Maurice?
He stands by the side of the road outside “DALY INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY CO”(D.I.S.C. plant hire) where he has stood for the last 20years. “He has been a big part of the company since he joined us over 20 years ago”. He goes out every morning at 8.30am and is brought in every evening at 5.30pm at close of business. Over the years he has had his own few adventures and mishaps, but unfortunately his disappearance yesterday-Thur.30th April- is a bit more serious as his kidnapping (mannequinapping) was caught on cctv & the gardai were alerted to the incident. A few stories about “The Yellow Man”. When Michael Jackson came to town & played Pairc Ui Caoimh, The yellow man was just standing outside DALY INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY doing his duty, when a group of not so nice people took a dislike to him & decided to beat him up & kick him out onto the road. After a small few operations & replacement limbs he was back to work.
He has had his hard hat stolen several times & even had a cork jersey robbed off his back in broad daylight. (We think it was a Kilkenny man who took it) Read more
