With cash prizes totalling in excess of €2,500 the competition is already attracting major interest from some of the top anglers in the country.
Deep-sea angling in Youghal has seen somewhat of a revival over the past number of years with two ’state of the art’ Charter Boats operating from the Bay; The ‘Rebecca C’ operated by South Coast Charter’s Martin Colfer and ‘Seahunter’ operated by Youghal Dive Charter’s Gavin Tivy.
“Youghal has always been a favourite spot for anglers down through the years and thankfully the industry here is on the up. Angling is widely regarded as the biggest participation sport in the country and we felt the time was right to capitalise on that and introduce the first deep-sea angling competition here for many years” said Gavin. “We are thrilled with the interest, and it has far exceeded our expectations”

To add to the occasion Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Commerce has organised a number of activities over the weekend to coincide with the spectacle. A ‘busking competition’ will run on Saturday 27th June throughout the afternoon in the town, and a range of activities including ‘face-painting’ and Barty’s Disco will operate on the quayside on Sunday 28th June.
Bookings are still being taken for both competitions. Charter Boat entries cost €50 per person for the weekend, €5.00 per person for the competition and equipment can be rented for €10.00. Entry to the private boat competition is €20.00 per person. The organisers have also indicated that any profits generated from the competitions will go to the Youghal RNLI.
