JOHN SPILLANE musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller, poet, dreamer – a canvass filled with color and brilliance.  His music transports the listener; his live performance captivates the audience.  In a world filled with strife and upheaval, a time-out with John Spillane is enough to ease the load a bit on anyone lucky enough to bask in his light. The man and his music are pure magic.

john spill pic

What makes John special is that he is an artist who knows how to deliver all that he has to offer to anyone of any age, male or female, no matter the musical preference.  Place him in the genre of folk, acoustic, traditional, world or pop – that’s fine with John.  He’s a man who is very comfortable in his skin. Whether performing solo with guitar, with gentle accompaniment or with full band before 10, 10,000 or 100,000, John entertains, charms, and mesmerizes.
John is a native of Cork, the County he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe”, and it has been a huge creative influence on him. Vocally, he is quite unique with an almost sean nós-like element in his singing and he is said to have a voice “full of honesty, commitment and sensitivity”.
Two-time Meteor award winner, John is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland today. Among those who have covered his songs are Christy Moore, Karan Casey, Pauline Scanlon, Cathy Ryan, Sharon Shannon, Sean Keane, George Murphy, to name a few. He performs to audiences large and small everywhere.
From his heart-warming visit to Senegal to film a “musical visit” for an Irish television series (where he met and played music with, among others, the legendary Baaba Maal), to his 2008 Australian tour where he sang the Irish National Anthem before 45,000 people attending the Australia v. Ireland Ozzie Rules Football, to singing for the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese (by invitation), and so on ad infinitum …
John’s performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent Cork humour. If you are looking for a night of good ‘craic’, a John Spillane show should not be missed.
VERY NICE QUOTES, INDEED:
“ … some of the most skillfully crafted, vividly realized songs anyone has written in Ireland over the past dozen years.” Earle Hitchner, premier writer/reviewer for Irish Echo and The Wall Street Journal.
“ … funny, quirky, massively entertaining. John is a story teller, a shanachie.” Dan Regan, Founder, Kansas City Irish Festival.
“Why isn’t John Spillane a major star? [John] writes catchy, heartfelt folk-pop songs with the bonus of actually meaning something.” The Sunday Business Post (My Dark Rosaleen & The Island of Dreams).
“He’s carved a niche writing melodic, compelling, simple songs. Spillane is at his best when his delivery is unforced and lyrical.” Oliver P. Sweeney, The Ticket, Irish Times (”My Dark Rosaleen & The Island of Dreams).
“ … glorious technicolour hues that transcend linguistic boundaries; world music for a new world.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times (The Gaelic Hit Factory).
“ … these tracks exhibit Spillane’s remarkably prolific output of gorgeous, peaceful tunes.” Lisa Coen, Hot Press (Hey Dreamer).
“[John Spillane] delivers the goods yet again. “Hey Dreamer” is a stunner.” Steve Cummins, Hot Press (Hey Dreamer).

MICK FLANNERY a 25 year old stone mason who was brought up on a farm outside Blarney, Co. Cork, Ireland. His first real connection to music was watching an unplugged Nirvana covering Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World”. After a stint in a music college in Cork, he traveled to the U.S. where he “wandered around for a time.” While there, he entered the U.S. Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee and, to his surprise, won two top awards for his compositions.

MICK FLANNERY

If asked, Mick adamantly refuses to talk about himself. The best you’ll get from him on any given day is, maybe, an admission that he’s a bit “grumpy”, he enjoys a good game of poker, and he’d love to own a Gibson® ES-335.
So, if you’re determined to get up close and personal with Mick Flannery, you’re gonna’ have to kick back and listen to his music because that’s where he actually talks about himself. Mick writes all of his songs (words and music) and plays both piano and guitar.
“Mick Flannery is a singing and songwriting force to be reckoned with.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times
“Mick is a songwriter of the first order … His voice is pained, gravelly, and powerful. Recorded or live, it carries through and stops you in your tracks.” Urban Folk, New York

Ballycotton lifeboat fundraising committee calls on new members to join them for their annual general meeting on Tuesday, 20 October, at 8:30 pm, in Ballycotton lifeboat house.

This hardworking committee has a long tradition of raising large amounts for Ballycotton lifeboat.  Over the years they have seen their numbers diminish which restricts them in what they can do.  This year they are sending out an SOS for new members.

Various fundraising events are run throughout the year and manpower is becoming a critical issue.  The committee understands that a member cannot be available at all times, after all they are only volunteers.  That is why it is so important to have a large committee to fall back on.   New ideas are always being sought for fundraising events and with new blood come new ideas.

The lifeboat service is a vital emergency service for our island nation.  The RNLI is a charitable service and fundraising is its lifeblood.  Ballycotton lifeboat fundraising committee is asking anyone with a little spare time to share it with them.  Committee members do not have to live in Ballycotton but can be from anywhere with a little time to give.  New members are always welcome and if you are interested in joining the committee but cannot attend on 20 October please contact a committee member.   If there is someone who does not want to join the committee but would like to help occasionally would you please contact Bláthnaid at 087 4151475 to make yourself known?

* Ballycotton Lifeboat was founded in 1858.  To date, the crew of Ballycotton Lifeboat Station have been awarded seventeen medals by the RNLI, 2 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze.

Katie Murray from Youghal is one of  3 girls who went out to Fr. John Keane’s mission in Ecuador last June. Kate sent in these photographs to www.youghalonline.com to show the work that Fr. John is doing and describes the conditions of the houses she saw in Ecuador.

They are mostly all made from cane and once the rainy season comes they can often get damaged or destroyed by the rain. They are all very small and very temporary and are very  overcrowded. More than 5 people per house usually and sometimes with two families. The photos ‘ecudaor 030′ ‘ecuador 031′ and ‘ecuador 032′ are photos of the church that Fr John built over there. It is now finished but that is the stage it was at back in June 2009.  One of the photos shows Kate and Fr. John with 3 of the local men who were working in the church.

The rest of the photos then show the typical cane houses there and dust and dirt roads. there were very few tarmacadam roads there. There is also a photo of the interior of a school that is made from cane also. It kept getting broken into when we were over there because obviously the cane is not very secure.
