From Ireland to India, a lunar eclipse was seen during  the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Lunar Eclipses only occur during a full moon, and like the blue moon, it is unusual for the lunar eclipse to take place on New Year’s Eve.

“For the first time in 353 years we’re going to see an eclipse of the moon on New Year’s Eve,” said David Moore of Astronomy Ireland. “It’s the perfect way to ring out the old year and ring in the new.”
