Make A Difference: Make The Big Swap

‘THE BIG SWAP’ is the theme for Fairtrade Fortnight 2010, which will also highlight the continued growth in Fairtrade sales and support in Ireland.

“The Big Swap is all about encouraging people to swap some of their usual purchases – tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas for example – for a Fairtrade Certified product,” says Peter Gaynor, Executive Director, Fairtarde Mark Ireland.

“Thousands of Irish consumers have already made the big swap; regularly switching some of their spending to Fairtrade products and in doing so making a real difference to the lives of producers in developing countries.”

The proof of this is in retail sales of FAIRTRADE Mark products in Ireland which increased by estimated 27% in 2009 to €118million – and expected to grow further in 2010.

“We expect Fairtrade sales to grow again in 2010,” says Gaynor. “In the last few months, and again this week, some of the best known brands in Ireland have announced they are switching over to Fairtrade.”

In recent months, significant conversions to Fairtrade have been announced by Cadbury Ireland and Nestlé.  And this week, Ben & Jerry Ice Cream announced that it will complete the global conversion of its entire product range to Fairtrade ingredients by 2013.

“The big manufacturers are realising that Fairtrade is also good for business,” says Peter Gaynor. “It’s also important to acknowledge that Fairtrade’s growth in this country is a testimony to the work of our volunteers – they believed in Fairtrade when it was perceived as a worthy but unrealistic niche business.”

Volunteers have driven the Fairtrade Towns and Schools initiatives and 45 towns and cities north and south, including Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Galway, are now certified Fairtrade Towns. Three more – Tuam, Tipperary and Carrick-on-Suir – will be Fairtrade-certified in the next fortnight.  An additional 29 towns are working towards Fairtrade Town status.

These towns will be hosting their own Fairtrade Fortnight events over the next two weeks and some other Fairtrade Fortnight highlights include:

·         Appearances by Fairtrade ‘ambassadrice’ Stefan Steverink, aka Dutch housewife ‘Gerri’

·         Bewley’s ‘The Big Swap Wall” campaign – customers are invited to sign their support for Fairtrade on a wall at Bewley’s Grafton Street shop. For each signature received, the company will donate €1 directly to a Nicaraguan coffee co-operative

·         Oxfam’s nationwide swap-a-cuppa campaign

Three overseas producers will also be touring the country during Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 to share their first hand experience of the difference that Fairtrade’s support has made for their families and communities. They are:

* Hella Alikuru: Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Hella is the Africa Region Coordinator for the International Union of Food & Agricultural Workers (IUF)

* Josephat Sylvand: Josephat is a coffee producer and the Assistant Export Manager of Kagera Co-operative Union Ltd (KCU Ltd) in Tanzania

* Oscar González: Oscar is the communications director for the Coomprocom coffee co-operative in Matagalpa, Nicaragua

Declan will be supported on the night by local band deburca with special guests Jenny Stack  – Kate Mulcahy & Jack Hussey

Contributions are welcome on the night to support Bobby Lee John Riordan and Davie Murphy on their trip to Haiti on building project in April with Haven.

Declan O’Rourke used to be one of Ireland’s best kept secrets, but rave reviews for his debut album ‘Since Kyabram’, a growing international fanbase and an enviable collection of eminent devotees, including Paul Weller, Snow Patrol and Kate Rusby, are rapidly changing that.

On its release in Ireland, ‘Since Kyabram’ reached double platinum status and garnered Hot Press magazine’s ‘Best Debut Album’ award. A major record deal with V2 and a publishing deal with BMG followed, as did patronage from his peers – invitations to support Snow Patrol at Marlay Park in Dublin, Teddy Thompson on his UK tour, The Divine Comedy for dates in Germany and the U.K., and to perform at the legendary 100 Club at the request of Paul Weller.

The buzz is growing, based on the simplicity of great songs and a unique voice. Declan’s lyrics touch on all aspects of the individual, his songs focus on the centre of everyday emotions and his voice irresistibly draws the listener in. He has an understated charm, a quick-wittedness that make him highly endearing live and equally at home playing to one person as he is to thousands.

“Singing in a velvet-tinged bartitone with a killer falsetto….it’s a rare gift that his music can bear comparison with so many classic era troubadours, Fred Neil, Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen while still sounding so completely original” Nigel Williamson, Uncut

From the opening melody of ‘No Place To Hide’, the first song on ‘Since Kyabram’, to the final key of ‘Marrying The Sea’, Declan’s ability to tell a story unfolds. Each track on the album gives a feeling of being part of a collection of short films; the connecting thread being Declan’s flowing and dreamy lyrics. The album embodies the roots of his Irish heritage, but also has a distinct rock edge, reflecting, in part, his time spent in Australia from age fourteen to his return to Ireland

Brideview Drama’s festival entry for this year, “Pied a Terre” was played to a very appreciative audience in Tallow over the weekend. The feedback received from those who attended was most encouraging and comments like “the best festival production coming from Brideview in a long time” and “superb set” were most encouraging.

Pied a Terre cast with Director Jack Aherne

Directed by Jack Aherne the play is an adult story with comedy as well as some very emotional scenes playing out the drama between three characters; Katie, a nineteen year old prostitute (Irene Kelleher), Jack, a fifty year old lawyer (Eddie Kelly) and Jack’s sister (Vanessa Hyde). There are many twists and turns in the plot and the audience is kept guessing right up until the final scene. With a superb set designed by Mary Sheehan and built by Peter Seeley, Mary Sheehan and Judy Burton and with help from James Hyde and Des Fitzsimons – the drama is played out in the New York apartment setting which is plush and not at all “conventional”.

Brideview would like to thank our Sponsors, Ted Keniry and Daybreak in Tallow and all those kind supporters who donated raffle prizes. Thanks once again to Paddy and Margaret Geary for handling front of house and to Mary Curley, Carmel McDonnell, Audrey Sheehan and Veronica Henley for their help with the interval refreshments.

Pied a Terre will now be performed at the Cork Arts Theatre this week from Thursday to Saturday (25th – 27th February) so please let your friends and family in Cork know that we are on! Tickets €15 can be pre-booked at 021 4505624 are at the door on the night. Curtain at 8pm.

Pauline Neville Scott started painting in her teens and, from the very first time she took a paint brush in her hand, she knew that painting would be one of the loves of her life. Pauline paints in oil and her work covers mainly landscapes and seascapes.

Artist Pauline Neville Scott with her sons Anthony and Neville presents a cheque of €4,000 to Anne Dwyer, Acting matron, Marian Murphy and Eleanor Barry from the fund raising committee of Youghal Community Hospital and Hospice

In a chat with the East Cork Journal, Pauline said  “All my life I got a lot out of this town and it was time that I gave something back to the community”, Youghal Community Hospital,” she continued, “is a most wonderful institution giving the very best in care to those from the town and area who require it. It means that patients can remain close to home, where family and friends can visit them on a regular basis.”

Funds are always needed to maintain such a great Community Hospital, and so Pauline decided that her way of “putting something back” would be to produce a Calendar of her paintings which could be sold to raise much needed funds for the Hospital. Pauline first of all sought, and received, the permission of Youghal Community Hospital to sell the calendars in their name. Flanagan Printers came on board to print them, and Youghal Credit Union kindly agreed to exhibit the paintings, all of which helped very much to promote the calendar. Pauline herself selected the various paintings from her collection, and decided on an appropriate painting for each month of the year so that the four seasons were reflected throughout.

On Wednesday last, Youghal’s Pauline Neville, presented a cheque to the value of €4,000 to Anne Dwyer, Acting Matron of Youghal Community Hospital, which was the proceeds from the sale of 800 calendars sold in the town over the past five months or so. Pauline herself was delighted with the great response of the people, and with the huge financial success of her calendars. She extended sincere thanks to Flanagan Print, Youghal Credit Union and “especially to the wonderful people of Youghal who bought the calendars which raised this great amount”.

Everyone is a winner in this story – Youghal Community Hospital for the funds, the artist herself for organising such a great event, and the people who bought the Calendars and can enjoy forever, Pauline’s wonderful paintings.

Youghal’s June Bank Holiday weekend will be filled with the sounds of soccer at Youghal United’s home ground ‘Ardrath Park’ where sixteen brave souls will attempt to break the current Guinness World Record for a 5-A-Side soccer match.

Youghal United Schoolboys/girls and Academies will benefit from funds raised during this gruelling challenge. The current record stands at 27 hours and 15 minutes and is held by two teams from Surrey County Council in England.

The day to day running costs such of a soccer club as everyone knows is significant with cost such as transport, equipment, maintenance amongst many other costs during the season.

So with great passion the powers that be at Youghal United AFC will use this mammoth challenge as an opportunity to seek sponsorship and raise as much funds as possible during this unique record breaking attempt.

This particular challenge is known throughout the World and prior to Youghal United’s attempt, Liverpool and England International soccer star Jamie Carragher is also attempting to break the current record, which could even set a tougher task for the Youghal men.

Youghal United Promotion Committee member Jock Gallogley said “To promote this key event we will have a fun filled family day to run in conjunction with the challenge. We believe that this challenge will carry very strong media interest, after all it is the first time an Irish club has ever attempted to break this record. We are seeking sponsorship from local and national organisations to help us fund this challenge, all support would be really appreciated. This opportunity will offer a great platform for advertising and branding for those sponsors”.
