Alcohol consumption on Youghal’s streets, beaches and other public places will be illegal from February 19th next. January’s Town Council meeting ratified the new bye-law following a six week public consultation period during which no submissions were received. By Christy Parker
The move follows an alarming increase in underage drinking, anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related crime in the town. Matters reached a new nadir last October when illegal alcohol consumption was linked to a serious stabbing incident and gardai also apprehended several underage drinkers during a school half day.

In two changes to the draft legislation, the council increased the proposed on-the- spot fine from €30 to €75, in accordance with that in other jurisdictions and also added “beaches” to the areas of public description. Failure to pay the fine within 21 days may lead to a court appearance and a maximum fine of €650. The gardai will be charged with enforcing the ruling, with fines appropriated to the council.

The law will apply to public areas within the town boundary, while it is hoped that Cork County Council will also apply it to its jurisdiction in due course. Pubs and restaurants providing kerbside tables will be exempt and it is expected that gardai will use discretion regarding picnics etc.

The red planet, now 62 million miles from Earth, will be at its brightest this year as it lines up opposite the sun. At around 9pm, last Friday, Mars was above and to the left of the moon, about the length of an outstretched fist away.

A standard SLR camera fitted with a telephoto lens is all you needed to capture the scene

Mars is at its most spectacular when close to the Earth at opposition. In 2003 the planet was just 35 million miles away as it faced the sun, and more than four times brighter than seen last week.

It’s time to light the lights! Excitement is building as the very entertaining play “Tom, Dick and Harry “is coming to the KGK Community Hall.

This is a play written by Ray Cooney in partnership with his son Michael; Ray Cooney is one of Britain’s most successful playwrights. He has had numerous plays staged in the West End including Run For Your Wife and Funny Money.  His work has been translated into more than 40 languages and countless productions have been staged all around the world. He is a true architect of farce as you will see for yourself when you travel out to Knockanore where you can sit back and belly laugh at this superb production; directed by David Murphy.
The award winning Brideview Drama Group are delighted after their successful run in Tallow to be performing for the first time in the professionally fitted theatre in the KGK Community  Sports Hall. This is a state of the art theatre facility which was the vision of four people Will Motherway, Bridget Hunt, Ber O’ Farrell and Tomas Roche. How appropriate it is to have the two men Will and Tomas performing in this production. They are both looking forward to finally treading the boards at Knockanore as is Audrey Sheehan who teaches in the school adjacent the hall. For sheer hilarity this well cast  play is definitely not to be missed, involving a  couple desperate to adopt a child, the husbands two idiot brothers bordering on the fringe of criminality, illegal immigrants  and an Albanian crimelord  to name but a few.

As this is a fundraiser on behalf of the KGK Stage and Lighting Committee there will be a raffle at the interval and complimentary teas and coffee with the warmth and friendliness Knockanore always have to offer.
This play is suitable for the whole family. Curtains up at 8.15pm on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th of February. We would like to ask all the KGK Community Hall Committee members to lend their help and support to this production. Admission is 10 euro for adults and 5 euro for children. There will be family concessions available. If you would like to book you can do so by ringing Ber O’ Farrell on 024 97315 or 087 9940043 or alternatively you can come along on the night. Looking forward to seeing you all there for this historic occasion.

In light of the Haitian earthquake Youghal natives, John O Riordan, Bobby Lee and Davie Murphy, are jetting off to Haiti to build houses with Cork born charity Haven on April 25th.We need to raise €4000 each  to pave the way, we have some fundraising events coming up and would appreciate the help.

Attached some info on Haven and the dates of our events to date.
Leslie & Carmel Buckley founded Haven in late 2008. Leslie is a successful businessman and co-founder of the Digicel mobile phone company. His business interests brought him to Haiti for the first time in 2004 and he was really horrified by the level of poverty on this island in the Caribbean. He decided to do something to help and set up Haven with an initial donation of one million euros to cover adminiteration costs.

Haven is building homes and communities in Haiti in two ways. Firstly, it is training, up-skilling and employing local Haitian people to build the homes all year round.
In this way, Haven is creating jobs in a country where unemployment stands at more than 50% and opportunities are few. Secondly, Haven is bringing large groups of volunteers to Haiti for an intensive Build it Week.

Haven’s first project is in Ouanaminthe (pron. wan-a-menth), in the northeast department of Haiti. It is a border town close to the Dominican Republic. There are approximately 50,000 people living in the town and another 50,000 on the outskirts. It is mainly rural and under-developed. The UN estimate that 94% of people are living below the official poverty line and unemployment is rife. Haven is building homes in the rural areas. We will build 200 new homes and upgrade 250 more in our first year of operations. Most of our beneficiaries live in makeshift mud huts, often with thatched roofs. They have no running water and most have no toilet facilities. The average income of our beneficiaries in Ouanaminthe is 523 gourdes – which is just over € 9. Those who are working are mainly involved in agriculture or informal trading.

In 2009, 260 volunteers from every county in Ireland took part in Haven’s first ever Build it Week. These pioneering volunteers built 41 houses, a new playground, an extra classroom for the local school and a basketball court. And all of this during the hottest week Haiti has seen for more than 37 years.

Conditions were tough – but that made it all the more rewarding for all of us involved. 41 Haitian families now have a proper roof over their heads for the first time because of all your hard work.

Each volunteer is required to raise a minimum of €4,000. Approximately €2,000 of this covers flights, accommodation, food and water for the duration of Build it Week. The remainder of the funds raised will go towards building materials for the houses that you will build during Build it Week.

Volunteers will live on site in basic accom- modation, and will take part in all activities that go into the running of the camp as well as the construction of the new homes: roofing, plumbing, painting, medical, catering, water distribution, etc. With your help, Haven will build 300 houses across Haiti this year.

Club Leagues

After 7 weeks of competition the final of the club league was played
on the 7th of March. The final was contested by team A ( Martin O’
Regan, Joan Hyde, Declan O’ Shea, Ted Healy) and team E (Thomas
Bulman, John Wallace, Martin Dalton, Teresa McCarthy). After 36 holes
in tough windy conditions team E emerged victorious by just one shot
on a final score of 309 – 310.
We now look forward to our annual Scratch Cup which will be played for
on the 28th of March. Hopefully we will see a good turnout from our
own members this year after disappointing participation in recent
years.

County Leagues
Round 4

The intermediate team won their first game of the league this year by
beating St. Annes in a thriller in Fermoy.2-1 up after the fourballs
with wins for Don Sheehan/Jimmy McCarthy and Ted Kelly/Brendan
McCausley the lads went on to halve the singles 3-3 and take victory
by 5-4.There is great credit due to the team for their perseverance
this year and justice was done when they finally won a game. The
future looks bright for the inter team and the experience gained this
season will stand to them next year where hopefully they will contend
for top honours.
The senior team had another comfortable game on Sunday when they beat
Riverside 8-1 at a blustery Collins course. With 4 wins out of 4 and
an aggregate of plus 31 the team is guaranteed to top the section with
one game to play. That game is against Fermoy at Lakewood where
victory will eliminate one of the pre tournament favourites.
Round 5
The seniors took on Fermoy in Lakewood on Sunday last. With top spot
already secured the task at hand was to attempt to eliminate one of
our closest rivals. Fermoy led 2-1 after the fourballs with some fine
play most notable from former All Ireland champion John Cahill.
Claycastle came storming back in the singles to earn a draw on a score
of 4.5 a piece. Gary O’ Sullivan showed nerves of steel to halve his
match vs. Daithi Sexton and claim the half point that secured the
draw, both players were 12 under par for the round!  The draw
eliminated Fermoy and we now have a semi final line-up of Collins vs.
St.Annes and Claycastle vs. Templebreedy. The games will be played on
Sunday 21st of march with the venue yet to be decided.
Its early to say but a final of Claycastle vs. Collins is on the cards
and what a cracking game that would be. There will be a small matter
of a semi final to overcome first where the opponents will be
Templebreedy who have the greatest player to ever play the game ‘Ray
Murphy’ in their ranks. All in all an exciting couple of weeks lay
ahead for the team and the club. Best of luck lads!

County Leagues-
Round 1-

The two Claycastle teams had mixed fortunes in the first round of
games played in Kilshannig last Sunday. The seniors had a comfortable
8-1 victory against a weak Lakewood team and greater tests lie ahead
in the coming weeks. Fermoy provide the opposition for the seniors in
Lakewood next Sunday in what will be a deciding game for both teams,
if Fermoy loose they’re all but out. However if Claycastle loose the
section will be too close to call. The intermediate team lost 6.5 -
2.5 to last years beaten finalist St.Stephens. With four of the games
being decided on the 18th hole the scoreline could have been a lot
closer and the lads can take heart from this fact in what was their
first ever game in the league. Its Lakewood next up for the Inters at
the superb St.Annes course in what already is a must win game.
Round 2-
Due to the frosty conditions the seniors game against Fermoy was
postponed. The intermediate game went ahead against Lakewood at the
St.Annes course. After the fourballs the teams were tied on 1.5 each.
The singles were also halved to give a final score of Claycastle 4.5
Lakewood 4.5. Claycastle now need to win their remaining three games
to have a chance of progressing to the semi final stage.

County Leagues
Sunday the 7th of February will be an historic day in the life of
Claycastle pitch and putt club as our senior and intermediate teams
play in the county leagues for the first time. The senior team have
been drawn in a group with St.Annes, Fermoy, Riverside, Rocklodge and
Lakewood. The lads open there campaign against Lakewood at the tricky
Kilshanig course outside Mallow. The inters have been drawn in group
with defending champions St.Annes, E.S.B., St.Stephens, Lakewood and
Rocklodge and will also be in action at Kilshanig. Games tee-off at
10.30 sharp and all players are asked to be at the course 20 minutes
before tee-off , With both teams playing well in practice respective
captains Martin Keohane and Don Sheehan will be confident of
progressing from their groups and hopefully on to a final appearance.
For those with a spectating interest in the league a huge game in the
senior section between Fermoy and St.Annes will take place in
Claycastle on Sunday 7th February. This is sure to be a cracking game
between two of the contenders for this years league.
