Now in its fifth year, this popular concert will take place in the magical setting of the Main Quadrangle, UCC, with all monies raised in aid of two Cork-based charities, Brú Columbanus, Cork and Special Olympics (Munster).

Anne Maria O'Connor of Bru Columbanus, Michael Holland of the Special Olympics pictured in UCC with Munster and Ireland rugby star Paul O'Connell at the launch of 'A Summers Evening on the Quad 2010.
Organised by UCC General Services’ Security and Community Policing, Barrack Street, with main sponsorship generously provided by BAM Building and media sponsorship by the Irish Examiner, it is hoped that this year’s concert will surpass the success of last year’s which raised almost €52,000 for charity and attracted an audience of over 1,200 people.
The spectacular surroundings of UCC’s Main Quad provide the perfect setting for this very special, outdoor, all-seated concert, which boasts an exciting line-up of performers featuring Meteor award-winner Brian Kennedy, mezzo soprano Fiona Murphy, with musical director David Munro and backed by The Band of An Garda Síochana. The evening will be compèred by Martina Carroll, RTE, and hosted by Pascal Scott (Killinaskully).
Brian Kennedy is the ultimate live performer, from the moment he bursts onto the stage, grabs his guitar and belts out his first note with total commitment! Performing with contagious energy, this successful singer, songwriter and guitarist combines a beautiful voice with quick wit and easy humour to engage with his audience and guarantee a memorable and entertaining evening.
Dublin-born mezzo soprano, Fiona Murphy has performed with Opera Ireland, Opera Theatre Company, Wexford Festival Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia and the English National Opera amongst others. A finalist in the prestigious Hans Gabor International Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna and Placido Domingo’s Operalia Competition, as well as winner of the National Council Metropolitan Opera Mid Atlantic Region Competition in 2004, Fiona performed so beautifully at last year’s A Summer’s Evening on the Quad concert, she is back again this year by popular demand!
Having started his musical life as a concert pianist, Glasgow-born David Munro has also achieved great success as a musical director, conductor, composer and arranger in most aspects of music making. David has written numerous works for stage and orchestra which have been produced and broadcast throughout the world, as well as working with popular Irish artists including Sinéad O’Connor, Phil Coulter, Moya Brennan, Brian Kennedy, The Dubliners and The Celtic Divas.
To enjoy this open-air concert at 8.00pm on Friday 11 June 2010, tickets, priced €40, are available from the Brú Columbanus 021-4345754 or 087 2787074 For further or visit www.asummerseveningonthequad.com
A Summer’s Evening on the Quad Annual Charity Concert at UCC - Friday 11th June 2010
The car enthusiasts were out in numbers last Sunday, (May 30th 2010), and in no time the ground in front of the popular Farrell’s Summerfield Bar, began to fill with a fine selection of classic cars both European and American. And what a display!
Photo: Bernard Cashman & Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com
The vehicles rested proudly and smugly on the lawn, accepting as their right the admiration and awe of all who surveyed them. The colours, shapes, sizes and ages of all the vintage, veteran and classic cars and bikes was a kaleidoscope of colour with shining bodywork, glistening wing mirrors, gleaming fenders and lovingly cared for upholstery. And those were just the vehicles! The owners were there, equally proud, delighted to stand next to their car and show off – with good reason. The people came from far and wide to see this outstanding static display and none were dissappointed

Christy Rice with his daughters Carol and Margaret and grandchildren Ben and Niall from Cobh and Youghal at the classic car event
This was the case yet again this month as Youghal town played host to one of the best cars shows in the Munster region. This mainly is due to the fact that the show is run as a strict classic car show, no steam engines or tractors in sight which usually is the norm on these events.
There were even some overseas clubs represented there. The quality and selection of cars was of very high standard from classic Mercedes, Austins, Fords, MGs, Rolls Royce, and Jaguars. There was something there for everyone and there was a good few American classics there as well.
Great credit is due to the organisers Johnny Greene and to host Michael Farrell of Farrell’s Summerfield Bar,Youghal on staging this wonderful event.

Minister Haughey launches Celebrating Lifelong Guidance for the Adult Education Guidance Initiative
Seán Haughey TD, Minister for Lifelong Learning today ( Tue. 25th May 2010) launched Celebrating Lifelong Guidance for the Adult Education Guidance Initiative – AEGI
The event took place at the Department of Education and Skills Clock Tower Conference Centre in Marlborough Street, Dublin.
This Overarching Research Report being launched today looks back on the first six years of the AEGI.
This was a period of great development and growth for the AEGI and this Report is very positive about that process and that period.
Since its establishment 10 years ago, the National Centre for Guidance in Education – NCGE, the central co-ordination point for the AEGI has shown that it is an invaluable service to adult learners and has rightfully gained a well-deserved reputation for excellence.
Throughout the country, 40 individual AEGI services provide excellent support to almost 40,000 further education learners each year.
To date, almost 160,000 learners have benefited from intervention by the AEGI – this is hugely impressive.
Launching today’s report, Minister Haughey said ‘This important report being launched today gives us a solid basis on which to move forward, to discuss where we can make improvements and enhancements and to recognise that much has changed in the interim.’
‘It is vital to our shared mission that we continue to work together, in partnership, to develop a robust but at the same time flexible further education and training that can provide relevant and tailored opportunities to our learners.’
‘It is important to recognise that with changing patterns of work, in an ever more globalised Ireland, people need to upskill and reskill at every stage of life in ever more diverse ways.’
‘Guidance is fundamental to any learning process and to the choices learners make, and given the increasing complexity of these choices, guidance is now more than simply pointing the way forward.’
‘It is about enabling and empowering people to make their own decisions and giving them the self-confidence and self-esteem to make choices about their personal and professional lives,’ said Minister Haughey.
During the launch, Minister Haughey took time to view a short film entitled Celebrating Guidance and Quiet Inner Confidence made by the award winning Irish film maker, Declan Cassidy and commissioned by the NCGE.
The Minister also applauded the Coolock Adult Education Guidance Service who shared their positive experiences with the specially invited audience.
‘You are inspirational and a credit to yourselves and a true testament to the success that is the AEGI programme,’ Minister Haughey told the the Coolock Adult Education Guidance Service.
‘As we launch today’s report my Department looks forward to the next 10 years, taking with us the very positive and collective experience of all concerned as key stakeholders in the AEGI service throughout the country,’ concluded Minister Haughey.

Sunday, May 30th 2010 at 8pm Emmet Place, Youghal, Co. Cork
Concerts at the beautiful 13th Century, St Mary’s Collegiate Church, Emmet Place, Youghal, have become very popular in the last few months with artists such as Mick Flannery, Kila and Declan O’Rourke to mention a few, performing there and these concerts have been greatly supported by the people of Youghal and the surrounding areas. Pic: Youghalonline.com
Slowly but surely we have been upgrading this beautiful ancient church with the addition of cushions in the pews, replacing old carpets and replacing the plastic partition in the chancel with a beautiful blue velvet curtain. The Church unfortunately doesn’t receive any funding whatsoever, therefore we rely totally on donations and income from the rental of the church. Only recently grant aid has been approved for the acquisition of a mobile stage and the three extra doors in the building are currently being repaired and will be open in the next week or so making concerts safer in the event of a fire.
In an attempt to continually improve the comfort of concert goers, we plan to install a heating system as it can be extremely cold during the winter months. A fundraising concert will be held on Sunday May 30th in the Church to raise funds towards the installation of said system.
Participation from community groups and individuals at this event has been so great that there will be 17 acts performing on the night from children’s dance groups to church choirs, from theatre groups to Michael Jackson impersonators to individual solo singers. Acts include Harmony, Youghal Choral Society, Chatterbox Dance Studio, Colin Lee, Terri McCarthy, The Blackwater Academy of Performing Arts and many many more great local singers and dancers.
It promises to be a great family evening out with a vast array of live performers in this beautiful setting.
Tickets on the door for only €10.
Parking available at the rear exit of the church on Raheen Road, at Fairfield car-park (next to Berties Pub) or behind Super Valu. No parking allowed in the grounds of the church.
Please come along and support our rich local heritage.
