The sun shone brightly on Youghal yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May 2010) allowing thousands of people to enjoy the first Youghal Bay Boat Club Open Day.

The recently formed club had been busy over the previous few weeks putting together an exciting itinerary which it hopes will ultimately lead to more people getting out on the water. The main purpose of the day was to showcase just how much fun and excitement can be had. The Open Day kicked off with a Parade of Sail at around 2pm, followed immediately by a Parade of Power.

All boats then rafted up just off the Quay for some quick speeches and a traditional blessing of the boats. It was then time for a nautical version of Wacky Races where teams attempted to navigate a fun course in a combination of sailing dinghies, kayaks and thundercat powerboats, followed by an afternoon of demonstrations and activities from all the different sections within YBBC – dinghies, kayaks, angling, thundercats, wakeboard, windsurf and more.

This was the first ‘on-water’ outing for YBBC and according to Club Commodore Padraig Brooks it’s going to be just a small example of what’s to come – “We’ve been amazed by the amount of support and interest the club has been getting since the idea of a club was mooted at the tail end of last year. We held a number of public meetings over the Winter and out of those we’ve now formed YBBC with a really strong committee on board to drive things along.

Over the Summer months we plan on having a wide variety of exciting events from angling competitions to cruises in company, powerboat races to fun days, all culminating in our first Maritime Festival at the end of August. A lot of different groups had been doing their own thing on the water here in the South East for the last few years and by bringing it all under one club everyone seems to have been re-energised. We extend an open invitation to all to come along, talk to us, and get involved ….whether you have a boat or not”.

Youghal local radio C.R.Y. broadcast the event live with local broadcasters: Noel Cronin, Station Manager, Declan Gibbons, Breffney Morgan from the TV show ‘The Apprentice’ Darragh Parker and Tommy Collins

As with all outdoor events, the weather plays a huge part, and the beautiful sunshine yesterday brought people out in their droves. Apart from the activities of the boat club there was some visiting ‘eye-candy’ in the form of four droolalicious motorboats, great food and boating stalls, and Community Radio Youghal did a fabulous job of supplying the music and commentary with a full outside broadcast. We even had an appearance from Breffni Morgan of ‘The Apprentice’.

  1. Great pics Mick – really captured the spirit of the day. Great weather really helped and we hope everyone enjoyed our first big day out in public. Hope to have a lot more like that!! Huge thanks to all that helped – Youghal Online, Community Radio Youghal, all the photographers and journalists that helped before during and after, boat club committee, all those on the water, the visiting ‘eye-candy’ and all those that came out to have a look at what we’re about. Now that you know – why not get involved!!!
