The band ‘Pot of Jam’ met three years ago at Clay Castle’s Rock School in Youghal. They became good friends who enjoyed playing a variety of music together. Soon after being asked to play together at several charity fundraisers they discovered they had they own unique sound and a loyal band of followers who enjoyed listening to them.

Meave Beecher, vocals and lead guitar, began to write some impressive lyrics while Tom Collins, bass, and Paddy Moloney, drums, would blend in with their own ideas to create a brand new sound. The result is “Loose Light”, the bands first EP which contains a varied range of music including samba, rock and gentle ballads. There is no doubt in anyones mind that they are individually very talented musicians but together in Pot of Jam they are creating alot of interest in the music arena.

New young faces on the CRY exciting schedule - Holly Rose Twomey and Jane Crowley

janeholly are currently in their 7th week working with local radio station, C.R.Y. (community radio, Youghal) The Girls were more than happy when station Manager, Declan Gibbons invited them to do a recording of one of the first shows the Girls had prepared. After hearing the connection and brilliance janeholly had together on air, Declan told the Girls about C.R.Y.’s new schedule which began on March, 30th. The girls were offered a place on the schedule every Tuesday from 6:30-7:00 P.M. on 104 F.M.

The first show was aired and received amazing response. With top of the charts music and competitions, the phones were buzzing. On each show, the Girls play the latest Music, talk about Fashion, Movies, Sports, Town events and much more. The Girls have also interviewed lots of interesting people such as: Nicola Lucey, winners of the Y Factor 2009 ‘the Seaside Girls’ , Nikita Savage of Youghal athletic Club, Mr.R and Breffny Morgan from last years ‘The apprentice’.

The sun shone brightly on Youghal yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May 2010) allowing thousands of people to enjoy the first Youghal Bay Boat Club Open Day.

The recently formed club had been busy over the previous few weeks putting together an exciting itinerary which it hopes will ultimately lead to more people getting out on the water. The main purpose of the day was to showcase just how much fun and excitement can be had. The Open Day kicked off with a Parade of Sail at around 2pm, followed immediately by a Parade of Power.

All boats then rafted up just off the Quay for some quick speeches and a traditional blessing of the boats. It was then time for a nautical version of Wacky Races where teams attempted to navigate a fun course in a combination of sailing dinghies, kayaks and thundercat powerboats, followed by an afternoon of demonstrations and activities from all the different sections within YBBC – dinghies, kayaks, angling, thundercats, wakeboard, windsurf and more.

"Aye-Aye Captain" Niall Baylor with his dad Martin at the event

This was the first ‘on-water’ outing for YBBC and according to Club Commodore Padraig Brooks it’s going to be just a small example of what’s to come – “We’ve been amazed by the amount of support and interest the club has been getting since the idea of a club was mooted at the tail end of last year. We held a number of public meetings over the Winter and out of those we’ve now formed YBBC with a really strong committee on board to drive things along.

Ben, Anthony, Corina , Jason and Conor with Jerry Dennehy from Blackwater Marina

Over the Summer months we plan on having a wide variety of exciting events from angling competitions to cruises in company, powerboat races to fun days, all culminating in our first Maritime Festival at the end of August. A lot of different groups had been doing their own thing on the water here in the South East for the last few years and by bringing it all under one club everyone seems to have been re-energised. We extend an open invitation to all to come along, talk to us, and get involved ….whether you have a boat or not”.

Youghal local radio C.R.Y. broadcast the event live with local broadcasters: Noel Cronin, Station Manager, Declan Gibbons, Breffney Morgan from the TV show ‘The Apprentice’ Darragh Parker and Tommy Collins

As with all outdoor events, the weather plays a huge part, and the beautiful sunshine yesterday brought people out in their droves. Apart from the activities of the boat club there was some visiting ‘eye-candy’ in the form of four droolalicious motorboats, great food and boating stalls, and Community Radio Youghal did a fabulous job of supplying the music and commentary with a full outside broadcast. We even had an appearance from Breffni Morgan of ‘The Apprentice’.

A new acoustic evening will be held monthly at the Marine Bar, Youghal

Aimed at both local and visiting musicians, it provides an intimate platform for individuals or groups to have their original or cover works listened to. More info from Claire Regan and Warren Tivy from Claycastle Recording, Youghal

The evening will close with Warren playing a selection of his own vinyl, and those discs brought in by the customers.

All eyes will be on Youghal this June Bank Holiday weekend, as representatives and coaches from Youghal United will attempt to break the current Guinness Book of World Records held for the “Longest 5 aside soccer game” in the world. The current record stands at 27 hours and 15 minutes and is held by 2 teams from Surrey County Council in England. Photo: John Hennessy

Our objective of this event is to raise much needed funds for our school boys, girls and our academy. and without the generous support of our event sponsors, Michael Farrell of Farrells Bar, Paul Dempsey of Berties, Brian Hennessy of Sports & Leisure and Thomas & Michael Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Homes we would not be able to attempt this.

Twenty six players are currently training for this event from which the organising committee will have to pick sixteen to attempt the record. There will be ten disappointed players comments Emmett Perry one of the organising committee but the moral is very high and the lads that do not make the final cut will be there to offer support and help out in the attempt in other ways. We are planning two six hour games in the next few weeks and this will give us a good idea of how the players react both physically and mentally.

Pierce Hennessy another of the organising committee and who is also hopeful of getting his place in the team comments that the final sixteen will have to be both physically and mentally prepared. This is the equivalent of running three consecutive marathons.

Apart from the actual game we are also busy planning a family fun day with bouncy

castles, food stalls and attractions. Local radio station community radio youghal will be covering this event live on 104fm.

The committee of Youghal United are working overtime preparing for this event and we are currently preparing a commerative book to celebrate our 25th anniversary.
