Youghal’s First Family Fun Festival Launched by newly elected Youghal Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley.

Youghal’s first Family Fun Festival is an example of how a small vibrant community can celebrate and make known the spectacular amenities of the River Blackwater, Blue Flag Beaches and vast variety of local activities.

In addition, the festival’s focus on providing FREE Family Fun Entertainment for all ages is “most welcome” said Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley in Youghal (July 1st 2010).

At the first official function since her election, the Mayor of Youghal launched the 2010 Youghal Family Fun Festival at the Mall Arts Centre in Youghal. The festival takes place in the harbour town on the weekend of the 16th to 18th July 2010.

Failte Ireland South West Representative Hilary Creedon, spoke on how Youghal, seen as an area of excellent amenities was chosen as a Family Fun Hub last year, one of the few in Ireland to be supported by Failte Ireland. “We are delighted to see that the businesses of the area have come up with such a range of activities suitable for all families for this, the first of what is sure to be many Family Fun Weekends in Youghal, the heart of the Sunny South” commented Hilary.

Announcing the details of this year’s festival programme, the Chairperson of Youghal Family Fun Festival Committee Mrs. Sal Tivy outlined the financial support that made the festival possible and detailed the events schedule.

“We hope that this exciting and varied programme of events will appeal to both locals and visitors and pay tribute to the support of SECAD, Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Youghal Town Council and Failte Ireland for their support not to mention the local business community” commented Mrs Tivy.

The Festival is an open-air, land and sea-based weekend event, with the aim of highlighting the attractions and amenities of Youghal; including the river, beaches, town and countryside. It also promotes local, community-based arts and crafts, as well as some good old traditional style family fun” said Mrs Tivy.

Musical offerings include ‘DJ Freddie’ Friday night, local favourites ‘Rannach’ on Saturday night as well as a host of surprises during the Mardis Gras Parade which kick starts the festival on Friday evening. Literary Lovers will be treated to some storytelling on Saturday afternoon in the library to the delight both young and old. Activities to enthuse the adventurous will feature Raft Races, Crab Competitions, “Fastest Daddy” race or test one’s skills on a Spud & Spoon course!

Not forgetting the vast heritage associated with Youghal; guided walks suitable for all the family are also featuring in this packed schedule. The weekend of the 16th to 18th of July is packed with options for all the family, while art exhibitions, dance workshops and storytelling are just a sample of some of the other activities to keep young people
highly entertained.

Guest Speaker, Veronica Hunt, a Youghal native and the Kerry Rose for 2010 delighted the crowd with the details of a very exciting first for Youghal introducing the participants of the “Queen of the Sea” Competition. Each girl was introduced by Miss Hunt who went on to detail that the money fundraised by each “Queen of the Sea” was going to “Childline”, encouraging all to dig deep in the coming weeks for such a worthy Charity.  Childline received over 800,000 calls in the past year, 500,000 of which the helpline was only in a position to answer.  The government contributes only 10% of the entire budget of the ISPCC, and it was re-iterated that fundraising events such as the Family Fun Festival in Youghal were vital to its very existence.

WHEN does an athletics race/walk become a very personal part of your life?

Derek Kiely Reports

Derek Kiely Reports

Martin Drake a very well known Youghal athlete who to this day is a huge character within the sport and still an enthusiastic competitor only knows too well as he sadly lost his wife Caroline nearly a year ago and as a tribute to her and an opportunity to help Marymount Hospice in some way he is organising what could be one of the biggest East Cork road races outside of the Ballycotton ‘10’ in association with Youghal Athletic Club.

Athlete Martin Drake with sponsors and supporters outside Farrell's Summerfield Bar, Youghal - Pic www.youghalonline.com

Last week the official launch of this great project took place in Farrell Summerfield Bar and it was apparent that the huge numbers that attended this launch were thrilled to be part of this personal and very worthy event.

Noel Berkley and James McCarthy are just two of many elite and International athletes that will take to the roads in Youghal to help raise funds for this most worthy cause as well as show Martin their supports.

Martin and his co-organiser Tim Twomey got together months ago to see what they could do and since that meeting the names just keep rolling in.

Twomey told YoughalOnline.com Sport “The purpose of this whole event is twofold, one to honour the memory of Caroline and two to raise some funds for Marymount. We now have over a 100 sponsorship cards out there and our very printer sponsor ‘Flanagan Print’ is printing another couple of hundred such is the demand and that is great”.

The race has many sponsors already including Farrell’s Bar and Jack O’ Patsy Pottery and the race will start on Sunday July the 18th at 2pm at Summerfield Cross make its way through Youghal turn at the North end of the town continue back up the quayside and finish by the Front Strand at the old train station covering a distance of four miles.

The race is being measured and organised by ‘Ballycotton Running Promotions’ and has an AAI Permit for both runners and walkers of all levels alike.

Kathy O’Donovan representing Marymount Hospice said “We are building a new hospital and we have the frame of it up, but we still have a way to go and events like these are so important to us. The new hospital would give patients individual rooms and give each person the privacy they deserve, so again we say thank you to everyone involved in this event”.

Athlete Martin Drake and Mayor of Youghal Sandra McLellan

Youghal Town Council Lady Mayor Sandra Mc Clellan said “When Martin first organised this charity event in aid of Marymount Hospice it started out as a local fundraiser, but it gradually started to gain momentum and has turned into a huge event”.

People from all walks of life are attending and contributing is some shape or form for this race and the fun and entertainment that will follow with the many prizes presented on the day, but the man behind it all was for once really caught for words on the night.

Athlete Martin Drake and members of his family

Martin Drake told YoughalOnline Sport “It was emotional, but it was lovely. All of Caroline’s family are here tonight and they are as thrilled as I am about how highly thought of she was. I am delighted and touched by the support I have received and I hope everyone enjoys the day”.

The annual Friends of St Raphael’s Open Day commences each year at 2pm.  This year, the event was planned for Sunday June 27th and when the East Cork Journal arrived at 2.10pm it was to find the grounds of the hospital packed with people, all in great mood, buying, chatting, eating, dancing on the grass and generally having a great time.   The colourful plants were almost all sold, the book stall was doing great business, the burger vans were surrounded, the candy floss was swaying in the warm breeze and the mugs of coffee were being downed at a very fast rate.

David Whyte, Paddy O'Brien, Teresa Collins and Johnny Wallace

But that was only part of what The Friends Open Day is all about.  The Friends of St Raphael’s Fundraising Committee comprises John Roche, Chairman, Frances O’Neill Ahern, Secretary/Treasurer and a very active committee who commenced making their arrangements and organisation back in February, working very hard  to make sure that everything is just right for the day.   The weather was beautiful, the live music was played brilliantly, neighbours met for chats and the residents of the hospital had a fantastic time.

Paula Tutty, Frances Ahern, Michael Roche, Julie and Edel Coyne

An event such as this needs help from many people, and the Friends of St Raphael’s told the East Cork Journal that they are particularly grateful to their main sponsors, john McCarthy Motors, Fermoy and Ann Marie from Walsh’s Pharmacy, Youghal.  Also, huge thanks to the people of the town and surrounding areas who not only come along on the day to support, but also those who donate items, books, gifts etc.,  Also, for the wonderful home cooked pastries, cakes, scones, biscuits brought along which were very quickly snapped up.

Tara and Maurice with facepainter Áine Neville O'Donoghue

The proceeds of the Open Day will go towards updating the bus which is used on a daily basis for the benefit of the clients.  Bus trips to the beach, the Opera House, and various other outings mean a lot, and as the bus has eight seats which are specifically designed for disabled persons, comfort is included along with the health and safety of the passengers.

Frances O’Neill Ahern told the East Cork Journal that many of the staff gave up their Sunday to help out on the day and the Committee are very grateful to them.  Of course, one cannot forget the marvellous coverage supplied by CRY, and Barty Murphy who organised all the live stage entertainment for the day.

Caroline, Zigmunt and Victoria Chlopek from Poland and Youghal

The main winners of the Raffle were:  1st (€500) Katherine Ansbro Blackwater Heights;  2nd (€300) Tadhg Lyons, Crookstown, Cork;  3rd (€100) Finbarr Lyons Minane Bridge;  4th (€100) Susan Yellop, College Road Ardmore.

The Open Day, without doubt, was a huge success but, with so much activity going on, and with the huge crowds who came along to support our own St Raphael’s, there really wasn’t much time to stop and smell the roses!

Youghal Town Council has elected Fianna Fail councillor Mary Linehan Foley as its mayor for the coming year. The councillor was elected unopposed having been proposed by party colleague Cllr Sammy Revins and seconded by Fianna Fail Cllr Eoin Coyne at July’s AGM.

Cllr Coyne was then proposed as deputy mayor by Cllr Revins and seconded by Cllr Linehan Foley. Again no alternatives came forward amongst. Seven councillors attended the meeting, they being Cllrs Linehan Foley, McLellan (outgoing mayor), Murray, Hennessy, Burke, Coyne and Revins.

New Mayor of Youghal Cllr Mary Linehan Foley with her husband John and daughters Clara, Gemma and Shauna

Cllr Linehan Foley has been a member of Youghal Town council since 1999. She has previously served as mayor in 2002/3 and 2005/6. The daughter of legendary councillor, the late Paddy Linehan and his wife, Maureen, the new mayor expressed regret that her parents were absent to see her assume the chair once again. She is married with five children. Cllr Coyne was first elected to the council in 2009.

Outgoing Sinn Fein mayor Sandra McLellan was unanimously praised for a tenure that she had “thoroughly enjoyed.” She said that despite difficult budgetary times, the council had managed to secure funding for and reflected on highlights that included the town walls, quay walls, phase 2 of enterprise centre, continuation of heritage regeneration. The green light for long awaited waste water treatment plant and the multicoloured painting enhancement scheme served as further highlights.

Monday meetings still on hold

Earlier, the council opted to retain the Tuesday morning council meeting arrangement into July at least, Cllr Michelle Hennessy proposal that the Tuesday sittings continue in pending a review next month, was accepted.

The meetings were shifted to Tuesday mornings in lieu of the public sector pay dispute, which has recently been settled. However, Cllr Hennessy said that “as a mother of four” Tuesday’s timeframe suited her better for the summer duration and she sought support for the retention. Some councillors have, to their surprise, found Tuesday mornings more amenable but others find the opposite applies. One councillor, Labour’s Donie Daly, has been unable to attend any council meeting since April due to work commitments. All things considered, it appears that July will host the final breakfast sitting.

Noirín Ní Riain, Cora Fenton & Eileen Sheehan present

Women’s Voices … Women’s Stories …

The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal, Co Cork on July 14th at 8pm !

Weaving magically and effortlessly between poetry, song, and drama Women’s Voices … Women’s Stories …celebrates and edifies the range of human experience from the tragic to the comic through to the spiritual.

Internationally renowned as a spiritual singer, Noirín’s repertoire ranges from the Irish Sean Nós to the songs of the German mystic Hildegard von Bingen. Noirín often focuses on the powerful songs of women accompanying some of her songs with the Indian harmonium and a series of drones. Eileen’s poems display a strongly-rhythmic voice which weaves through a backdrop of rural landscape and domestic interiors to explore the depths of life and relationships. Referencing myth and Irish folklore, her earthy humour has an underlying feminist twist. Cora uses her wide range of acting skills to bring to life characters from some of Ireland’s best-loved writers. Her repertoire is drawn from sources such as the plays and stories of John B. Keane and the writings of Paddy Kenneally. Many of her stories tell of the everyday madness of “ordinary” life. They contain dubious words of wisdom on topics that range in diversity from how to comport oneself on religious pilgrimages, to advice on diets and how to deal with the man in your life!

Join us for a performance that promises to uplift, entertain and inspire everyone, male and female, young and old, alike.
