Ronan Arundle from Cork Hill in Youghal is a bricklayer who has a little time on his hands. Living in Ireland, we do not have the horrors of earthquakes, tSunamis or  Volcanoes and life is pretty good for most people. So Ronan decided it was time for him to do his turn for the people of Haiti, and try to give something back.   He contacted his friends in Youghal United Football Club, who were delighted to offer their superb facilities for a 5-a-side weekend of soccer, with all donations to be given for the Haiti trip. Team Farrell's (Standing) the winning first team with Team JD's 1 the runner-up team

Saturday and Sunday last, August 7th and 8th were the designated dates for the sponsored soccer and which received great support from many of the people of Youghal and surrounds.   Five a Side soccer is normally played at night, but in brilliant sunshine on Saturday morning last twelve teams took to the grass in their efforts to win this prestigious event.    Play went on all through the morning and afternoon, after which time the semi finals and finals would be played on Sunday.

Finbarr Walsh, Ronan Arundel presents the winning trophy to John Cotter, Captain Team Farrell's with Kamel from Supermac's Youghal, sponsors and Kevin Gallogley

Eventually, after a great spate of goals and tackling, fun and pokes, the winning team was the delighted Michael Farrell’s team of  Summerfield, who defeated – only just – the runners up team of JD’s (A).

Ronan thanked sincerely YUFC for the use of their superb facilities, to Kamel of SuperMacs Youghal who was their Main Sponsor, and to all the guys who came along to play the five a side soccer tournament.  Also to the officials, referees, Ken Hennessy and Kevin Gallogly without whose support the event would not have been a success.

It was a weekend of marvellous fun, of friendship, of getting in a little training and, for many, a chance to play a sport they normally don’t play at all.   But this was no joking event – all were serious about winning, and about raising as much money as they could for Ronan Arundle, who is on his way to help with the rebuilding of Haiti in October.

The object of the exercise is to show each agencies working skills and equipment and to blend them together in the event of a major emergency. The exercise consists of a vessel in distress at sea and several casualties having to be recovered from the water.

The casualties were then transferred to the shore where the Lifeguards and Youghal Coast Guard Unit transported them to the HSE ambulance service for treatment. The planned joint exercises was a great success with all the emergency services working well together.

The mackerel were bursting out of the water along Youghal’s famous quay’s yesterday (Monday 9th Ausust 2010) and right up the river Blackwater as they made their annual trip into Youghal. Report/Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com

Fishin’ in the dock of the bay

Each year, in the month of August, thousands of mackerel come into the shores and quays of Youghal for the pleasure of all who await them. The quays are thronged with locals and holidaymakers alike trying to catch these delicious healthy fish, rich in Omega 3 oils.

Rods are being cast out, fishing lines are being thrown, all eager to catch these popular fish. The fish are so plentiful that you could almost just put your hands in and pick them up. It’s an incredible sight and one that overwhelms you year after year.

Mary Walsh and Liam Crowley from Castlemartyr catch a fish for their dish

According to local fishermen, this phenomenon has been going on for as long as they can remember, whereby the mackerel follow the sprat bait into the bay, they come every year like clockwork. It’s good for us, it’s plentiful, and it’s cheap. The tourism potential for this type of fishing is enormous. It’s an exciting time and its one we look forward to.

HARVEST Opening night is Wednesday August 11th.Thursday August 12th it is open to the public and runs daily from 12noon to 6 p.m., August 12th until September 18th at The Grain Store, Ballymaloe House, Shanagarry, Co. Cork

Artists Diane Magee with ceramic sculptors Martha Cashman and Andrea Cashell from Youghal will exhib their work at the Harvest Exhibition. Pic: wwwýoughalonline.com

Combining the work of three painters – Rebecca Bradley, Diane Magee and Louise McKeown – with that of four ceramic sculptors – Liz Burgess, Andrea Cashell, Martha Cashman and Nedyalka Panova – this is an exhibition that varies in approach, content and theme, but is united by the location in which these artists live, the dedication with which they work, and their instinctive responses to the world around them.

The four ceramic sculptors exhibiting work in an array of different methods, demonstrating mastery of each medium along with flair, imagination and skill.

Based in Kinsale, Liz Burgess creates elegant and contemporary torsos of male and female forms, and garden sculptures inspired by the rock formations found at beaches around Cork, in raku-fired ceramics. Andrea Cashell is an award-winning ceramic artist from Youghal who makes contemporary slab-built sculptures using white stoneware clay, based on the organic forms and repeat patterns found in nature like those of shells, plants and flowers.

Martha Cashman is also from Youghal, now Cork based, and a very well known ceramicist who transforms the most humble of objects, such as tools and spoons, into symbolic pieces using delicate porcelain with bright lustre glazes, woven wire and wood. Nedyalka Panova is Bulgarian but lives and works in Cork, and is an award-winning ceramic artist whose work, inspired by nature, uses using a wide range of materials and techniques, from fine bone china to raku.

Artist Martha Cashman

Each of the three painters in the exhibition also responds directly and immediately to the individual environment in their work.

Rebecca Bradley was born in London in the 1960s and has lived and worked in Fermoy for the past eighteen years. Ranging from light, open, minimal paintings to more densely worked textural pieces, landscapes and places she has visited provide a starting point for her work.

Diane Magee was born in Youghal, where she lives and works, and her work explores and records the landscape, light and views which surround her daily. Originally from Clonmel, Louise McKeown is based in Kinsale where she runs her own gallery.

Deriving ideas, tastes and styles from various sources, she produces both landscapes and portraits, with her painting primarily influenced by the Irish countryside and its rich colours and people.

The broad range of work on view in this exhibition fully represents the exciting artistic life of Cork and its environs, and is a wonderfully engaging and authentic reflection of a genuinely vibrant cultural scene.

Mark Nolan "Privileged to have been part of the Youghal RNLI" Pic: www.youghalonline.com

Mark Nolan from Youghal is the son of locals Kieran and Brenda.   Mark has fond memories of his childhood days on boats, angling and sailing in Youghal, the old Regattas, and as a member of Youghal Sea Angling Club.

Having completed his Leaving Certificate,   Mark entered the Gardaí in 1980 and served in Limerick for fifteen years.  During his time there, Mark held onto his love of the water by his association with the Limerick and Clare Angling Club, despite the fact that members had to travel approximately forty miles to the boat moored in Liscannor in Co. Clare.    Mark transferred to Fermoy in 1995, and then on to Midleton in 1997, when Mark and his family moved back to Youghal, where they have lived for the past 15 years.

Mark is married to Caroline (Bulman) and they have three children – Gary, Sarah and Jack.  The late Buddy Bulman (Caroline’s Dad) and Kieran Nolan were friends for many years, and long before Mark met Caroline he spent many an occasion in the company of Buddy and his Dad, boating in Youghal Bay.

One of Mark’s ambitions was to serve with the RNLI.  Now living back in Youghal, Mark applied for, and offered his services to the Youghal RNLI.   In 1997 Mark was successful and accepted as a member.  In 1998 he went to the RNLI Centre in Cowes, Isle of Wight, for a week’s intensive training course.   Thus commenced Mark’s dedication and involvement with the local branch of the RNLI.
During his 13 years of service with Youghal RNLI, Mark said that there had been 213 call outs/rescues.   He was involved in 38 of the callouts/rescues and five lives were saved.

Age, for most people, is a relative thing but certainly there are some ages which are more special than others.  And so it was for Mark Nolan when he reached that special birthday on July 20th last.   That age, for Mark,  also brought with it some sadness and sense of loss as it means his retirement from the RNLI, which is the compulsory retirement age for all members.

Mark said that he will truly miss being involved with the RNLI as part of the crew.   He will miss, as he calls it, the ’buzz of the active service’ and being on the boat with the other members of crew, ‘on call’  or ‘on exercise’.

Mark Nolan Youghal R.N.L.I. Pic: www.youghalonline.com

Mark, however, is still looking forward to being associated with Youghal RNLI and one of the ways in which this can be achieved is through his young son, Jack, aged 11 years, who is passionate about the sea and all it involves.   At this very young age Jack is a member of Aquatrek and is trained to level 3 sailing.   To attain this training at any age is to be lauded, but to do so at such a tender age shows an interest, love and commitment that is unique.   Mark continued on to say that Jack, at an early age, spent a lot of time on the water, and sails regularly with Aquatrek.   Thus, the love of the sea comes from Kieran, to Mark to Jack.

Mark, quite passionately, said “I am privileged to have been part of the Youghal RNLI where I have made lots of friends, and was part of a team of dedicated and professional people who were involved in the saving of lives, and I am truly grateful for what have been, for me, some of the best years of my life”

The wealth of expertise which Mark has gained will surely never be wasted.   Mark will always be interested and involved with the Youghal RNLI and will be always be happy to share some of his knowledge and experience of the sea to the younger, enthusiastic crew.

Garda Mark Nolan, guardian of seas and land, we salute you.
