The Youghal Pobalscoil na Tríonóide 2010 annual summer graduation ball took place at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Friday. (6th August 2010). Report / Photo: Michael Hussey & Miguél N. White www.youghalonline.com Email: news@youghalonline.com

The champagne reception took place at the Youghal GAA centre, Club Arás, where the students gathered and mixed with their families and friends prior to the big event at the Rochestown Park Hotel.
The event was super stylish, the ‘fashionistas’ were out inforce and would give Carrie and the gals a run for their money!! Formal gowns, Maxi Dresses, were the order of the day. Bling Bling were a girls best friend and a girls right to SHOES!!! And Jimmy Choos at that. The theme was accessories- accessories- accessories – and handbags – lots of them! “Veni, Vidi, Gucci”…… Go figure!
The ladies looked stunning and the men scrubbed up pretty darn well in their tuxedos! At last, here was the 2010 Graduation Ball where Youghal’s fashion forward were allowed to shine.
The glitz and glamour of the ladies (and Gents) who attended the Graduation Ball is the highlight of the Youghal Pobalscoil na Tríonóide student’s social calendar. With over 260 students and their partners a terrific night was assured.

After mixing with friends and family, out came the cameras before the Graduation class made their way in style to Rochestown Park Hotel, many of the students having rented limousines and classic cars for the journey.
The night kicked off with a fabulous meal and it is true to say that the students had a great night of socialising and dancing to the rocking sounds of local group,”Clockworks” . Another great night of music, mingling and memories and a night to be forever remembered by the students.
The organising committee must be congratulated on such a successful night and YoughalOnline.com would like to wish all the Leaving Certificate students the best of luck with their results which will be announced shortly.
[ Pobalscoil na Tríonóide opened its doors to students in September 2006. The school was founded as a result of an amalgamation of three secondary schools - Coláiste Eoin (Technical School), Loreto Convent and CBS secondary schools in Youghal ]

The Sea the Boat and Me covers the restoration and relaunch of the Kathleen & May, the only remaining three masted wooden topsail schooner and her second maiden voyage to Youghal, Ireland. It is the story of the passion the boat evokes in the people who have worked on her as original sailing crew or modern day restoration crew.
It is also a personal journey into the past, and an exploration of a way of life now long gone, which this unique boat represents.
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Brendan Ahern, grandson of Captain Joe Ahern who sailed the Lizzie May to Ireland in 1908 where she was renamed Kathleen & May.
“I’m a young fella looking down at the water, the blue water, tibbling up and splashing around and I remember the father came along and put his arm around me shoulder and he says “take good care of it, it can be your best friend and be your biggest enemy”. Wasn’t he right.”
At my father’s funeral I met an elderly relative of mine who introduced himself: “My name is Pa Aherne, I sailed with your grandfather, Captain Joe, 70 years ago”. This introduction had such an impact on me that I decided I had to know more about this man, his stories of the sea, the old port of Youghal and the boat he had sailed on “The Kathleen & May”
The Continuing Story of the Kathleen and May is a film about just that – the boat, the sea, the crew, the life, the stories, the history. But there’s more than that. Yes. Something else. .There’s the passion – of the crew, of the captains, of the seafaring way of life, of the people who are restoring her today, of Steve Clarke who rescued her from decay at a Gloucester dock. And who was Captain Joe, my grandfather? Of my own fascination with the sea, water, just the water and the tales it has to tell.
“As a kid I never really saw the sea, didn’t have to see it, it was always there …just didn’t see it at the time. It was there at the top of the hill”.
The passion, however it bites, when it bites, that’s it, you’re hooked.

Two gifted craftsmen at work. Hanly’s unique song-writing and story-telling skills, combined with McGlynn’s tasty virtuosity on guitar make for a very special coming together of two of the stalwarts of the Irish Music scene. Lately, rekindling a musical relationship that led to two of Hanly’s best albums, Warts and All, and Happy Like This, their show has all the hallmarks of a musical road well travelled.
Limerick man, Mick Hanly is best known for his big stateside hit Past The Point of Rescue. The song scooped two BMI awards; Most played song of 1993 and One Million Radio Plays. But, Hanly’s songs have been covered by all the major Irish artists, including, Christy Moore, Dolores Keane, Mary Black, etc, while Hal Ketchum and Delbert McClinton, among others have sung Mick’s song in the US. He recently released Collected.
“Hanly has the ability to write such good tunes as Past The Point of Rescue, Damaged Halo, that deliver a distinctive rugged honesty, and controlled grasp of sentiment” Joe Breen, Irish Times, Jan’10.
Omagh man Arty McGlynn began his professional musical career at the tender age of 15years. Following a ten-year stint on the Showband circuit, Arty turned his attention to Irish Traditional music. In 1979, he released the groundbreaking McGlynn’s Fancy, which was the first ever album of Traditional music played on guitar. Subsequently, he became one of the most sought after guitarist in the country, playing with such luminaries as Van Morrison, De Dannan, and Patrick Street. In 1989 Arty’s duet album, Lead The Knave, with his wife Nollaig Casey was critically acclaimed, as was their follow up album Causeway. Arty’s production work is also wide-ranging. Artists such as Christy Hennessy, Francis Black, and Liam Flynn, have all benefited from Arty’s studio skills.
No one knows Mick Hanly’s music like Arty McGlynn. Bringing years of experience and formidable skill to the mix, his subtle accompaniment adds a new hue to this songwriter’s work.

Publication of detail on areas for possible divesting of catholic primary school patronage
The Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, TD, today published the outcome of work undertaken by her Department, at the request of the Catholic Church, to identify areas that may offer potential for the church to divest its patronage of certain primary schools.
The possibility of the Catholic Church divesting itself of certain primary schools was raised by the church with the Tánaiste’s predecessor as Minister for Education and discussed at a meeting in November 2009 with senior representatives of the church.
At the request of those senior representatives, the Department undertook to identify possible areas where the demographics and existing school configuration was such that there might be potential for the Catholic Church to consider divesting patronage.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills has today made this information available on the website of her Department.
The following criteria were applied in selecting the initial locations where a change of patronage may be warranted in areas outside of the five (5) city areas of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford:
1. Areas with a population of greater than 5,000 persons and less than 20,000 persons, as per the 2006 Census;
2. Areas that did not experience greater than 20% growth in the inter-censal period 2002-2006 and where the establishment of new schools is unlikely to emerge until at least 2016;
3. Areas that have at least three primary schools within a 2km range of the CSO Town Boundary; and
4. Areas where school provision is predominantly Catholic or where there is very limited diversity of provision at present.
A total of forty-three (43) town areas satisfied these criteria and six (6) were selected at random, having regard to achieving a diocesan and geographic spread for the purposes of more detailed analysis.
The four (4) Dublin City areas are random samples of areas that have relatively stable demographics where no new schools may be warranted in the medium term.
They are also areas that have a predominance of denominational school provision.
The Catholic Church authorities may now wish to identify some areas to trial the modalities by which the number of catholic schools could be reduced and thus releasing some schools for other patrons.
The decision on the identity of the particular catholic school or schools to be trialled will ultimately rest with the Bishop, as patron, and the catholic community in the parish or parishes concerned and must follow consultation with the parent body and staff of the schools.
Should the Catholic Church identify any such schools, there will be a need to put in place a range of processes, including appropriate consultation with staff, to address the implementation issues that might arise, such as ownership of buildings and transfer of staff.
These will include the necessary arrangements to consult and decide on the future patronage of identified schools.
