Following the recent launch of the Keith Phelan Appeal a group of local ladies decided to the kick start the campaign and help in the fundraising activities for Keith and what better way than by participated in the Evening Echo Women’s Mini – Marathon in Cork last Sunday, 26th September. The Phelan family from Raheen Park, Youghal, have launched a campaign to raise funds to sent their 11 year old son, Keith, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, for an operation in Germany, in the hope that it will improve their son’s quality of life.
The Phelans are attempting to raise enough money to bring Keith to the XCell-Center Dusseldorf, Germany where they believe he could benefit from stem cell treatment. Following inquiries to the centre they were informed that Keith had a number of options: surgical or lumber puncture (where cells are withdrawn from the hip bone marrow, good cells are retained in the lab where they regenerate and are reinserted by lumber puncture). It takes five days to complete the procedure.

An account for the fund has been set up through the Allied Irish Bank and the family is already busy planning ways to make the campaign successful. “We are hoping that people can donate directly, help us with our own fundraising or hold events themselves.” Tony said.
Youghal Credit Union has already supported the fund and should be one of the many agencies in the town to lend its weight to the campaign. No certainties have been given by the XCell-Center about the degree of change that might result from the treatment, or indeed how quickly the signs of improvement will begin to show. That won’t stop the family from trying everything for Keith. “There are no guarantees that the treatment will work or what way Keith might progress. Anything at all that could change one of these things would be great,” Tony added. If Keith’s positive demeanour and welcoming smile is anything to go by then he has every chance of success.

One small step for Keith could be one giant leap for his family.

On Sunday last (September 26th 2010) a little piece of local history was made in Youghal as the Baptist community held their first “Believers’ Baptism” at the Mall Beach.

Viki Nagy getting the "Believers' Baptism" in the River Blackwater at the Mall Beach, Youghal, with Ernie Tromsness and Mervyn Scott, Youghal Baptist Church leaders.
A short service was held in the forecourt of the Mall Arts Centre where the the two people getting baptised (Viki Nagy & Philip Mulcahy) told their stories of how they had come to trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Based on Christ’s command to His followers to be baptised in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew Ch 28v16-20), it was at their own request that they were now being baptised. Following the service, Philip and Viki were baptised by full immersion (only for a few moments!) in the sea.

Philip Mulcahy getting the "Believers' Baptism" in the River Blackwater at the Mall beach, Youghal, with Ernie Tromsness and Mervyn Scott, Youghal Baptist Church leaders.
Based on Romans Ch 6v1-10, the Baptist community are simply seeking to follow the pattern that Jesus taught, the Apostles practiced and the Early Church believed. In the Scriptures people “came” to Baptism, they were not “brought”. In simple terms, they believed in Christ for their salvation, were baptised to give an outward demonstration to that belief and then they belonged to the body of believers living in their locality. As they emerged from the water (which was a little cold!) it was good to know that there was tea, coffee and refreshments waiting in the wonderfully versatile Mall Arts Centre which were enjoyed by all present!

Actor and pianist Michael Lunts portrays Frederic Chopin, man and musician, in this unique musical drama about the composer. The Last Ballade plays for one night only, as part of a UK and Ireland tour, at the Mall Arts Centre in Youghal on Tuesday, September 28th at 8pm.
Relive the stormy end to one of the great romantic relationships, between Chopin and his muse, the novelist and ‘femme fatale’ George Sand. The music Sand inspired, including the beautiful Berceuse, the famous ‘Minute’ Waltz and the F minor Ballade, is played live as part of the action.
The Last Ballade offers audiences a dramatic insight, through the eyes of Chopin himself, into this extraordinary woman who has been variously described as both his muse and his “vampire”.
This year marks the bicentenary of Chopin’s birth so “The Last Ballade” would be a particularly appropriate way of celebrating the anniversary, appealing as it does to lovers of music and theatre and what better setting than in the 230 year old building that is The Mall Arts Centre on Tuesday, September 28th at 8pm !
This event is kindly supported by Cork County Council.

First Cut! Youth Film Festival 2010, October 2.
First Cut! Film Festival will take place on Saturday October 2nd,2010. The 2010 Festival for Young Filmmakers will take place at Cork County Hall, a free venue central to all participating groups with access to meeting and screening rooms The Festival will be a lively, informative, creative and fun mix of short films, also providing free workshops. This year we are delighted to have financial support from The Arts Council, SECAD and The Arts Council, Cork County Council.
It provides an opportunity for young people in the Cork Harbour Area to screen their work and view the work of their peers. The First Cut! Film Festival was launched on a trial basis as a one day event in 2009 with the aim of providing a programme of screenings of films made by young Cork people, workshops and talks by guest filmmakers. The success of this event and the response of the young people involved in it has provided the impetus to develop a more extensive festival in 2010.
One of the main aims of this years Festival is to showcase and celebrate the work of the young filmmakers who have participated in First Cut! Workshops and Summer Schools throughout 2010 and who are keen to share and compare their experiences with other young people involved in film making. This exciting event will premiere new work by young film makers on the big screen. It also provides opportunity for interaction with other film making groups, contact with professional film makers through workshops, networking, and information sharing designed to bridge the gap between beginners and professional film makers.
Workshops and discussion groups at this years Festival, are varied and stimulating and range from Animation to no budget, guerilla film-making.( See Attached doc. for more info.on all workshops on offer). We continue to build on links we have already made with Fresh, Corona, and Leeds Film and Midsummer’s Festivals. The screening programme will feature short films, 16 in all, made by the various youth film groups in the SECAD/ Cork Harbour area, ranging from work by newcomers to more ambitious films, made in the various centres during 2009-10.
The event is free and is now open to the public at large, hopefully encouraging other young people who are interested in film making to become actively involved.

FIRST CUT! FILM FESTIVAL WORKSHOPS 2010
Cassie and the Crystals is an epic high fantasy film written, directed and produced by young Mallow man AYMAN SCRUFFINS. Ayman who is a talented all rounder, has run a host of projects with young people in Mallow, including The Street Girls Dance Show (2009), Malla Mia Musical (2009) and The Fantasy Dance Show (2010). This is his second film after the runaway success of ‘The Key of Troplem’ in 2008 which was screened in the Gate cinema in Cork.
These projects were run by Ayman and a group of fellow volunteers under the guise of ‘Spotlight’, a youth group set up in 2006 by Youth Work Ireland CDYS based in the Mallow Youth Centre. Ayman is the key member of this group and only for his enthusiasm, vision and immense talent; this project would not have been possible. He has touched and improved the lives of so many young people in Mallow.
The film was the long term vision of the group, who set up a number of classes and workshops to harness the young people’s skills and talents in order to complete the film. Ayman choreographed the dance classes, the art classes created the set and the drama classes honed the acting ability. Finally after years of work, this group of enthusiastic young people will deservedly have the ‘Spotlight’ turned on them, for the premiere of Cassie and the Crystals on September 29th in the Gate Cinema in Mallow.
JANE LEE is an animator / director based in Cork who heads her own production company, Paper Plane Creations. Recent short films include Revelations (commissioned byThe Irish Film Board), Bare ( commissioned by the Irish Film Board, the Arts Council and RTÉ, ) and The Demon Within. Jane’s work can be seen on her website – www.paperplanecreations.com. Paper Plane Creations is all about story telling through visual media. Paper Plane Creations was founded in July 2004 by Jane Lee. Jane worked as a model-maker/ mould-maker in Dublin, Cork and San Francisco before making her first film, “The Demon Within”. Making the film gave her the chance to collaborate with some highly talented artists, designers, technicians and musicians in Cork which formed the basis of her company. As a film company we can deal with both live actors or animated figures to make short films, commercials or music videos. We can work to a script or could develop a basic concept.
BEACON HILL FILM PROJECT, film “The Pirate and the Mermaid” won the National Young Filmmakers Award this year (14-19 category) at Leeds Young Film Festival.
The Beacon Hill Film Project is a group of young people with learning disabilities and autism who, with support, make their own films from script to screen. They also make the props, design the costumes and compose the music.
This year, in addition to winning the National Young Filmmakers Award, the project has also won a First Light Award for Best Original Music (composed by the young people) which was awarded by David Arnold, composer of the recent James Bond Films. Their work has also been featured at Encounters, and on Saturday 4th September, the project won the National Lottery Award for “Best Arts Project”, broadcast live on BBC One to an audience of around 2.2 million viewers.
Film critic Barry Norman has described their work as “enchanting” and “made with great verve, infectious enthusiasm and off-the-wall originality” and we have also received backing from actors Toby Jones and Jason Isaacs.
PATRICK O’SHEA is an award-winning film maker who studied Film & Communications in the Dublin Institute of Technology from 1995 to 1999. He was Head of Operations for the Future TV Media Centre in Dublin for the year 2000, after which he moved to Luxembourg and worked in the film studios of Carousel Pictures and Deluxe Productions. He has written, directed and produced numerous short films and promo videos. His short film ‘Penny’, screened at the Cork, Waterford and Clones Film Festivals in 2008. ‘Penny’ won the Prize for ‘Best Drama’ at the Corona International Fastnet Short Film Festival 2009. It recently screened on RTÉ as part of its Short Screen series. His latest short film, ‘Tunnel’, has screened at the Cork International Film Festival, Electric Picnic, The Galway Fringe Fleadh and at Underground Cinema in 2009. He directs Promotional Video Diaries for Murphy’s Irish Stout on an ongoing basis and shot a promotional video for Beamish Irish Stout in 2009. He also produced and directed ‘The Dublin Writer’s Room’ in 2009. He is currently in post-production with his debut feature film, ‘Tree Keeper’ which was shot during the summer of 2010. Patrick is the writer, director and producer of ‘Tree Keeper’. Go to www.treekeepermovie.com for more information.

The Fresh Film Festival is a national film festival for young people, aged between 7 and 18, which takes place in Limerick each year. The Fresh Film Festival grew out of a need for a specific film festival for young people that would firstly assess their needs and then develop a programme that would suit their requirements. The festival is committed to the creation of a strong film culture in Ireland which it feels can be achieved by having film-making and film education freely accessible to young people.
The highlight of the festival is Irelands Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards, which showcases the best of Irish filmmaking talent. There is a junior section for 7 – 12 yr olds and a senior section for 12 – 18 yr olds. We also run a number of master classes in aspects of filmmaking that can be easily replicated in the classroom or at home by the individual. Jayne Foley, Fresh Director will present this workshop
