A new book by Colm Keane examines the experiences of Irish men and women who have had brushes with the afterlife
In Colm Keane’s new book, The Distant Shore, he speaks to 70 Irish men and women about their near-death journeys, visions and premonitions. Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com email: news@youghalonline.com

In October 2009 I received hundreds of phone calls, emails and letters from people who had encounters at the edge of death. Many came from Irish Independent readers who were responding to an article I had written about near-death experiences. The article was based on a No 1 bestselling book I had at the time called Going Home.
At least 50 of those who contacted me had briefly died following heart attacks, car crashes or other accidents. They spoke of tunnel travel, bright lights, meetings with deceased family and friends, life reviews and encounters with a “superior being”.
More described visions where deceased relatives returned to reassure those left behind that they were at peace, to offer help in times of need or to warn of pending tragedies, primarily deaths.
Others had premonitions that something bad — such as an accident, disaster or a death — was about to occur.
The stories they told me provide rare insights to the last and greatest frontier where our ‘consciousness’, ‘mind’, ‘soul’ or ‘spirit’ is said to survive after we physically die.
It is the afterlife, the otherworld, the ultimate destination we travel to on death — so often referred to by the phrase I used as the title of my new book, The Distant Shore.
The Distant Shore — More Irish Stories from the Edge of Death, by Colm Keane, is published by Capel Island Press and retails for €14.99.

O’Shea was training with the Irish Elite squad under IABA head coach Billy Walsh and Zuar Antia ahead of the World Championships and sparred with 10-time Irish champ and Olympic silver-medalist Ken Egan before departing for the USA.
According to former Olympian and Irish senior champ Kieran Joyce of the Sunnyside club, O’Shea can be very proud of his achievement.
“Training with the Irish Elite squad was exactly what Pa needed ahead of the Championships, said Joyce. “He did very well to reach his final and a silver medal win is a fantastic achievement.”

Youghal Labour Party will hold a special meeting to formally ratify Tommy O’Connell as the replacement for former town councillor, Donie Daly, who resigned from the Council in September. The move comes after it emerged that Mr O’Connell had not received a formal Letter of Affiliation from Labour Party Headquarters. Pic: www.youghalonline.com
It has been decided that a selection convention to fill the vacancy created by Cllr Daly’s resignation is to be held within the next seven days. The convention will be chaired by Cork North Central Labour deputy, Ciaran Lynch and will be attended by the two Labour candidates for Cork East, Sean Sherlock TD and Cllr John Mulvihill and members of the Consituency Council have also been invited.
If, as expected, Mr O’Connell emerges from this selection convention as the replacement for former Cllr Daly, he is likely to formally take his seat on Youghal Town Council at its December meeting.

The Youghal Arts Network are a very active group of people who, among other things, organise fund raising events to help voluntary clubs, organisations, groups, schools etc., in the town of Youghal who are in need of financial help.
South Abbey National School is a very old building which is school to as many children as it can possibly hold. It is a proud school with a long history in the town. Originally a Church, the School was set up in the premises in 1886. Thus, there are massive expenses involved in keeping this beautiful building maintained and suitable for the children of the school.

Martin Hennessy as Shawn Keogh and Ruth Hayes as Pegeen Mike in Youghal Theatre Companies production of The Playboy of the Western World at The Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal
The play is set in M.J. Flaherty’s public house in Co. Mayo during the early 1900’s. It tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm in Munster, claiming and boasting to have killed his father. He wins the hearts of the local women and especially captures the romantic attention of the bar-maid Pegeen Mike, the daughter of Flaherty. His prowess at the local race/sports meeting confirms him to be a real hero with real expectations of marriage to Pegeen Mike. When old Mahon appears alive and well, they turn upon their hero despite Christy’s offer to ‘slay his da’ a second time. Escaping from the villager’s clutches, he tames his father, and the two leave the public house disdainful of the gullible Mayo peasants.
