Vanessa Hyde of BRIDEVIEW DRAMA, IS ON THIS WEEK in Lady Windermere’s Fan at The Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork
Vanessa Hyde’s BIG PROFESSIONAL STAGE DEBUT IN CORK – she’s playing the lead role in Oscar Wilde’s play, Lady Windermere’s Fan, directed by Michael Twomey, at the Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork, from Wednesday 19 – Saturday 29 January (excl. Sun 23) @ 8pm. Tickets range from €7 to €25. This is a great international comedy, performed all over the world year after year and a guaranteed excellent night out.
Vanessa was specially invited by Michael to take the lead role as Mrs Erlynne, which is a great compliment to her (and to Brideview Drama – after all, where would she be without our years of support and endlessly casting her in our shows, eh? ha ha ha).
Outline of the play:
Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Play About a Good Woman is a four act comedy by Oscar Wilde, first produced 22 February 1892 at the St James Theatre in London. The play was first published in 1893. Like many of Wilde’s comedies, it is a biting satire on the morals of Victorian society, particularly marriage.
The story concerns Lady Windermere who discovers that her husband may be having an affair with another woman. She confronts her husband but he instead invites the other woman, Mrs Erlynne, to her birthday ball. Angered by her husband’s unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere leaves her husband for another lover. After discovering what has transpired, Mrs Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband and in the course of this, Mrs Erlynne is discovered in a compromising position. She sacrifices herself and her reputation in order to save Lady Windermere’s marriage. The fan in the title can refer to both the physical object—which Lord Windermere buys for her as a 21st birthday present—and to her admirer, Lord Darlington—who pays her deeply flattering compliments and eventually reveals his love for her.
On the night of the premiere, Wilde presented himself on stage, to answer the calls of “Author!” Amusingly, critics were more offended by the cigarette in his hand than his egotistic speech: “Ladies and Gentlemen. I have enjoyed this evening immensely. The actors have given us a charming rendition of a delightful play, and your appreciation has been most intelligent. I congratulate you on the great success of your performance, which persuades me that you think almost as highly of the play as I do myself.”
Tickets are available on the door, or visit the Everyman website to book: http://www.everymanpalace.com/pages/whats-on.php Tel: 021 450 1673. Email: info@everymanpalace.com.
Fr. John Keane, of Cloyne Diocese, has volunteered to spend some time in mission in the Archdiocese of Monrovia in Liberia, West Africa. He leaves for his Mission on Mon. 17th January. Fr. John, who already has missionary experience, will be met by another Irish volunteer, Fr Aidan Crowley, a priest of Dublin Archdiocese, but a native of Ballinlough, Cork.
Liberia was originally colonised by America in 1821 and its capital city, Monrovia, named after the 5th US President, James Monroe. Approx. 8.2% of the population are Catholic. The Archdiocese is spread over 29 parishes, with a total of 36 priests to serve 134,324 Catholics, a ratio of 3,731 people per priest, scattered over 6,168 square miles.
The country of Liberia is unusual among African Nations in that it was never colonised in the European carve-up of the the African Continent. The US establised it as a country for freed slaves who went on to develop their country into a Republic. Sadly two civil wars have left their mark on the economy of the country which still has a subsistence existence for most citizens with an average income of $1.25 per day.
Please remember Fr. John in your prayers and all those who minister to the neediest in Monrovia.
Happy New Year to all from Brideview Drama and welcome to our big play for the start of 2011! Directed by Jack Aherne, The Clearing by Helen Edmundson is a hugely entertaining historical epic suitable for all ages, with much to offer.
This is a true Irish premiere, as it’s the first time the play (written in England) has been performed anywhere in Ireland. Charting the story of two star-crossed lovers, it is set in 1652 during the Cromwell Era, when the British were raging across the land, clearing it of the Irish citizenry so their own could settle (in fact, over a third of the population were killed or forced to leave Ireland). Full of war, love, action, drama and adventure, The Clearing offers audiences much in the way of excitement.
The play needs a big cast, and the director Jack has drawn on the best talent from West Waterford and North Cork. Many are performing with Brideview Drama for the first time, while are others are back for yet another run. Welcome to Jan O’Sullivan of Lismore and Alison Lewis of Mitchelstown; while it’s hello again to George Peet (Aghern, Conna), Donal Howard (Fermoy), John Baldwin (Knockanore), Colm & Sean Aherne (Dungourney), James Lenane (Lismore) and Rachel O’Connell (Cork).
Set design is by Mary Sheehan who did such a great job with Pied a Terre last year and, as always, Judy Burton has done wonders with props and stage management. Sound and lighting is by Matthew Kavanagh and Emily Aherne, with set construction by Jack Aherne, Tomás Roche and Peter Sealey. Also, this production sees a huge amount of costume creation by Vanessa Hyde, with many pieces specially sewn and made by Catherine Feeney of Tallow.
First produced in the 1990’s, The Clearing has garnered much international acclaim, including: (New York) “A fine script exceptionally well realized on every count”; “A strong, straightforward production, built around thrilling performances” (Glasgow); and “A story convincingly and sympathetically realised and universally accomplished” (London).
The Clearing is on the end of the month at Tallow Community Centre (Friday and Saturday nights, 8.15PM, January 28 and 29). Tickets will be available on the door and, as we always do, Brideview Drama will have lots of free refreshments, including wine, soft drinks and nibbles.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Vanessa Hyde from all in Brideview Drama, who is starring in the professional production of Lady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde, on from this Wednesday for 10 nights, at the Everyman Palace Theatre in Cork (directed by well known actor and theatre director, Michael Twomey). This is a great opportunity for Vanessa as she was specially invited by Michael to take on the role. We all wish her well in the key role with all the funny lines – Mrs Erlynne.
Youghal’s Walter Raleigh Hotel was packed to the rafters when the Sacred Roots Y Factor final was held amidst huge excitement and expectation. The competition commenced on December 18th when thirty acts auditioned in the Hot Spot Youth Centre, Youghal for a chance to perform in the Y Factor Talent Show 2011 final, and the talent on the night was outstanding. Despite the difficulty of the judges in choosing the twelve finalists, those picked to go forward were certainly some of the most talented young performers one is ever likely to see. Sacred Roots invited CRY Fm’s Jane Holly Show along to host the event, which was a very popular decision.
The twelve finalists included six aged under fourteen years and six aged between 15 and 18 years, and the judges had the difficult task of picking a winner from each category. ans and Dads, Grandparents, brothers and sisters, friends, neighbours, relatives and many more thronged into the hall to give their support, and they were not disappointed. The acts included singers, dancers and entertainers with some performing to live accompaniment and others to a backing track. There were bands, groups, individuals and duos and the variety was very entertaining.
In the younger age category the Judges had the very difficult task of picking a winner, but eventual Samantha Forrest was named as the overall winner after her emotional rendition of the Leona Lewis hit of Snow Patrol ‘Run’ which was exceptional.
Chris Moloney, in the over 15 category, mesmerised the audience with his performance of the Coldplay hit ‘Fix You’ and continued with his ‘beatbox’ vocal break which brought everyone to their feet in appreciation and delight.
The winners each received a cash prize and an opportunity to make a recording at Youghal Claycastle Studio. The night’s proceedings and the audition were filmed, and plans are advanced to produce a DVD of the event.
Lessons were certainly taken from this incredible night, which showed evidence of the huge amount of local talent which abounds among the young people of Youghal, and the great support which is given to them. Bobby ee, co-ordinator of the event, told the East Cork Journal that his thanks must go to the volunteers who helped him with the organising and running of the event. Man of the performers, he continued, are regulars at Youghal’s Hot Spot Cafe where a well resourced music room hosts rehearsals and lessons.
Sacred Roots is a non profit, voluntary rn project, encouraging and helping people realise their potential through the form of music, and they most certainly deserve the support of the people of Youghal and surrounds.

Jobs Policy Needed
The number of people living in Cork East Constituency on the live register at the end of last year stood at 12080, says Fine Gael TD, David Stanton.
“Cork East Constituency, which I represent in Dail Eireann, covers parts of East and North Cork including Carrigtwohill, Cobh, Fermoy, Mallow, Midleton, Mitchelstown and Youghal. The number of people signing on here has increased from 7345 in December 2008 to 12080 in December 2010. This represents an increase of 64.9% over two years, well above the Cork County average of 61.6%. This increase also does not take into account the tens of thousands emigrating.
“Despite emigration on a similar to scale to the 1980s, the number signing on in social welfare offices in Cobh, Fermoy, Mallow, Midleton and Youghal is continuing to rise. There is a need to put in place policies that will lead to job creation and growth. Our small businesses in particular need support and opportunities.
December 2008 December 2009 December 2010
Cobh 682 1063 1172
Fermoy 1703 2729 2798
Mallow 1732 2593 2833
Midleton 2021 3278 3372
Youghal 1207 1774 1905
Total 7345 11437 12080
“Young people under 25 in the Cork East area are also finding it very difficult, with 1866 now on the live register. People this age are one of the main age groups being forced to emigrate in search for work. Employment and training policies must be developed to stop this talent “brain drain”, which will prove very costly to our economy for many years.
“Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that 437,079 people were on the live register at the end of 2010. The national standardised unemployment rate now stands at 13.4%. A 31 year old man appeared in at a special sitting of Youghal District Court last Saturday night, charged with the murder of Michael O’Shea in the town last Week. William O’Leary, originally from North Cork but recently resident at Flat 11, 85 North Main Street, Youghal was remanded in custody to Cork city prison to reappear at the regular sitting of Youghal District Court on Friday January 21st. Mr. O’Leary only spoke to confirm his name and that his date of birth was 28/5/1980.
The accused, single and unemployed, is the separated father of a young son. It is believed he moved to Youghal last November and resided in a flat two doors down from the murder victim.
Prosecuting Sergeant Paul Kennedy told Judge Terence Finn that on charging Mr. O’Shea with murder at Midleton garda station earlier that day, the accused had replied, “I’m sorry.” On request of defence solicitor Shane Collins-Daly, of Cork solicitors Daly-Derham, Judge Finn granted free legal aid and ordered that the accused receive any medical or psychological care deemed necessary while in custody.
Members of Mr. O’Shea’s family sat impassively yards from the accused during the ten-minute hearing. Hours earlier they had buried their son and brother at North Abbey cemetery in a funeral service attended by a large number of mourners.
Mr. O’Leary sported tightly cropped hair, beard and moustache and was dressed in grey track suit bottoms, grey hooded top and white trainers. He removed both his hood and a dark knitted cap during his time in court. Flanked by detectives, he looked tired and pale. Before leaving the court he held his head in hands at the rear of the room.
Michael O’Shea’s body was discovered by fire fighters who were called to his called flat at 2.30 am on Thursday January 12th. They discovered Mr. O’Shea, a single man also aged 31, under a bed in the scorched ground floor apartment. Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards. A post-mortem revealed he had received several stab wounds, including one to his neck.
The accused was arrested in Cobh on Friday and taken for questioning to Midleton Garda station. A crowd of about 50, mostly young, bystanders gathered as Mr. O’Leary was conveyed from the court in a police van.
A 29-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a man whose body was found in a burning flat in Youghal in Co Cork earlier this week.
William O’Leary, was this evening brought before a special sitting of Youghal District Court where he was charged with the murder of 31-year-old Michael O’Shea.
Mr O’Leary, with an address at a flat at 85 North Main St, Youghal, is charged with the murder of Mr O’Shea at his flat in the same building between 12-13 January.
Sgt Paul Kennedy gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court that the accused replied ‘I’m sorry’ when the charge was put to him after caution.
Insp Eoin Healy said that gardaí were seeking a remand in custody for a week and Judge Terence Finn remanded Mr O’Leary in custody to appear again at Youghal District Court next Friday.
