Labour’s Sean Sherlock took the 1st seat followed by Fine Gael’s David Stanton who took the 2nd seat. FG Tom Barry (3rdseat) and SF Sandra McLennan (4th seat) elected on seventh count at 12.50 after16hours. McLellan is the first TD from Youghal town since the late Séan Brosnan who held the seat for FF back in the 1970′s.

Sandra McLellan was first elected to Youghal Town Council in 2004 since then she has been active on a range of issues concerning the people of Youghal. Sandra is also Sinn Feins candidate for Cork County Council. A former SIPTU Shop Steward, Sandra has direct experience of traditional industries closing down and leaving towns desolate of good jobs. She believes that job creation is the biggest issue facing East Cork. Sandra is married to Liam and has three children. She is acutely aware of the pressures facing families today.
Sandra has worked at national level in developing Sinn Fein Health policy particularly around the need to provide good quality preventative cancer care.
A member of the Fairtrade Committee, Sandra was instrumental in achieving Fairtrade Status for Youghal. She is Chairperson of the New Enterprise Centre at St. Marys College and is also a member of the Community Alert and the Tidy Towns Taskforce Committees.

Sandra was the Sinn Féin candidate for the Cork East Constituency. She believes job creation is the biggest issue facing East Cork. Sandra was first elected to Youghal Town Council in 2004 and topped the poll on her re-election in 2009.
Sandra McLellan ran unsuccessfully in Cork East in the 2007 general election. She says she was privileged to be the first Sinn Féin Mayor of Youghal in 2009. In 2009 Sandra was elected to Cork County Council.
No Fianna Fail TD was elected in East Cork.

The last time Youghal had a TD from the town was Seán Brosnan
Seán Brosnan (21 December 1916 – 18 April 1979) was an Irish barrister and Fianna Fáil politician from County Cork. He served for 10 years in the Oireachtas, as a Teachta Dála (TD) and as a Senator.
At the 1969 general election, Brosnan was elected to the 19th Dáil as a TD for Cork North East. It was his second attempt — he had been defeated in 1965 — and he lost his seat in the 1973 general election. He was then elected to the 13th Seanad Éireann on the Administrative Panel, but he regained his Dáil seat in a by-election in November 1974 after the death of his Fianna Fáil colleague Liam Ahern.
Brosnan was re-elected in the 1977 election to the 21st Dáil, and also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). MEPs were at that time appointed by national parliaments rather than being elected, and Brosnan was one of a 10-member delegation from the Oireachtas until the first direct elections in 1979.
After his death in 1979, the resulting by-election on 7 November was won for Fine Gael by Myra Barry.
The Irish general election of 1981 was held on 11 June 1981, three weeks after the dissolution of the Dáil on 21 May. The newly elected 166 members of the 22nd Dáil assembled at Leinster House on 30 June when a new Taoiseach and government were appointed.

The general election took place in 41 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in the lower house of parliament, Dáil Éireann. The number of seats in the Dáil was increased by 18 from 148 to 166.
The general election of 1981 was the first one of five during the 1980s. The election also saw three new leaders of the three main parties fight their first general election. Charles Haughey had become Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fáil at the end of 1979, Garret FitzGerald was the new leader of Fine Gael and Frank Cluskey was in charge of the Labour Party.
Haughey and Fianna Fáil seemed extremely popular with the electorate in early 1981. He was expected to call the election at the time of the Fianna Fáil ardfheis on February 14, but the Stardust fire caused the ardfheis to be postponed, and the Republican hunger strike in the Maze Prison began in March.[1] By the dissolution in May, much of the earlier optimism in the party had filtered out. The Anti H-Block movement fielded abstentionist candidates in solidarity with the hunger strikers, undermining the Republican credentials of Fianna Fáil.
Fianna Fáil offered a very attractive manifesto, promising the electorate more spending programmes. Fine Gael also put forward a series of tax-cutting plans. Both the main parties policies seemed completely unrealistic, particularly since the national debt of the country was spiralling out of control.

Cllr McLellan said the most effective way voters can deliver such change, is by voting for her and her party.
She said no other party or candidate in Cork East is offering to if elected,
· To abolish the Universal Social Charge.
· Refuse to put one more cent of citizen’s money into toxic banks.
· To introduce a new 48% Wealth Tax for those earning more than €100,000.
· To reverse Social Welfare cuts and to reinstate the minimum wage to its former level before the 2010 Budget.
· To Protect Public Service jobs and conditions, to cap salaries at the higher end of €100,000 and to eradicate all wastage in the services.
· Reduce the salaries of TD’S by 30% and by 40% for Ministers and the Taoiseach.
· To introduce a financial stimulus package for the economy and to embark on a national Construction Programme, including the building of much needed schools and hospitals.
Gerry Adams was canvassing with Sinn Fein Cork East Candidate Sandra McLellan during the week. Youghal native McLellan said she was thrilled with the response from the people of East Cork. Adams and McLellan did a walk around Midleton Main St. to meet the passers by who came out in very large numbers to greet them and wish them well on election day.

Sinn Féin will fight up until the last vote is cast.
The Cork East Sinn Féin organisation, although pleased with our candidates support in the Evening Echo’s internal poll, is not about to become complacent.
We know from the feed back of our hard working canvassers in the North, South and East of the constituency, that these support figures are close to ours.
Sinn Féin knows there is a better way in addressing all the problems that are currently facing the Irish nation, and we know too that the people of Cork East agree with us and so will give their votes to Sandra McLellan.

With polling day tomorrow, David Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East was pleased to visit shops, restaurants and businesses in Youghal this morning. David was accompanied by Youghal Town and Cork County Councillor Barbara Murray, and other members of his campaign team.

Cllr Barbara Murray, Michael Treacy - Proprietor of The Nook Bar, David Stanton T.D. and Dick Barry enjoying a pint in the Nook Bar, Youghal
“It was great to spend a few hours meeting business owners and their employees and listen to their concerns,” said Deputy Stanton. “I am aware that Youghal has suffered from recent factory closures and this has been very difficult for the people of Youghal. It was also unfortunate that the planned decentralisation of two Government Departments to Youghal did not go ahead. Issues such as an improved N25 from Midleton to Youghal and improved broadband infrastructure would really help to attract industry to the town again.
“It is vitally important that small, local businesses are supported in every way. They are the main source of income and employment in the town. We must ensure existing businesses are supported and business start-ups are encouraged. I am doing my best to support Cllr Murray in her work with Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group to develop and expand the local enterprise centre and support traders in the town,”

“I have also been working with people in the area to promote the Blackwater region as a separate tourist identity. I think Youghal has great tourism potential which should be further exploited,”
concluded David Stanton TD.
Hello all,
You may have heard that I’m running in the general election for the Green Party in Cork East. Although I have done as much canvassing as I can, it has been impossible to reach every voter with our relatively small local Green Party group.
It’s going to be an extremely challenging election for the Greens. I would really appreciate your No. 1.
The green party manifesto is here: http://vote.greenparty.ie/manifesto
and our short party political broadcast (well worth a watch) is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t67ZnDx2LRQ

I have taken part in several radio interviews and a couple of these are available as podcasts

I know that everyone is unhappy with where we’re at as a country, and some are unhappy with what the Greens have and have not done as a small party in government. Obviously, I still align myself with Green principles and think that we have done well in government. I believe this is the cleanest, most honest and least compromised party in Irish politics, by a long way.
Please complete your ballot paper to ensure that your vote carries to your subsequent preferences, even if just to keep out the candidates you want to avoid representing you in the next Dáil. You may find it easiest to begin numbering your preferences backwards, starting with your least favourite! It’s disappointing that there aren’t more exciting candidates running but please do vote, even if just to keep out the most boring options!
A list of Cork East candidates is available at: http://www.irishpoliticians.com/candidatesbyconstituency.php?constituencysearch=Cork+East&sort1=party&firstshow=no
If you have a vote outside of Cork East, I ask you to vote Green in your area. We are looking at the possibility of a Dáil without a single Green TD, which to my mind would be a great shame. For those of you in Cork South Central especially, I urge you to give Dan Boyle your No. 1 or your highest possible preference.

YOUGHAL’S MAIN STREET, from Windmill Lane to Cork Hill, is to be resurfaced this year following Cork County Council’s acquisition of €300,000 from the Department of Environment on behalf of the town. Town Clerk Liam Ryan has thanked Town Manager Patricia Power and the engineers at Cork County Council for their successful submissions to the department for what he has described as “a considerable sum in these difficult times.” The work is expected to start in early autumn and be completed for Christmas.
In a further development, the town’s battered and bruised Mall Lane is to be resurfaced shortly, after the town council agreed to allocate funds for the work from a €195,000 grant provided by the Non-National Roads Authority. Of the sum total, €26,500 has been already spent on salting and emergency repairs during the very cold weather, €25, 000 on road patching works in January and €80,000 has been allocated for Quarry Road and Golf Links Road resurfacing. The balance of €63,500 will provide €30,000 to resurface the Mall Lane to meet both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, along with meeting the monetary requirements for road markings and other signage if the council adopts the Ashe Street/Devalera Street area Traffic Development Plan. Any leftover money may be considered for re-surfacing the northern end of Allin’s Quay to the double slips.
Berties Golf Society had its first outing of the year with the always popular Bertie Dempsey Memorial Cup in Youghal last Saturday, 19 February. Big numbers were expected and we were not disappointed, with 68 players teeing off on the day.

Fine speeches were made by Paul Dempsey and, representing Youghal Golf Club, Patsy Regan.
The Society would like to take this opportunity to thank Youghal Golf Club for looking after us so well on the day. The food and service at the club is top notch!
Well done to everyone who played on the day. The Society is growing in number year after year and has its strongest turn out at this event, a fitting tribute to the man himself, Bertie Dempsey, a great supporter of all sports in our town always.

A worrying trend toward closures on Youghal’s North Main Street has been contradicted with the opening of a new health food shop in the area. Liz’s Health Store at number 105, has moved quickly to replace the departed Horan’s shop which had traded for some five years from a nearby premises.
The new shop holds strong links with the old, as proprietor Liz O’Connell served her health shop time, so to speak with Horan’s. During that time she undertook several courses and gained most of her qualifications in the area of health food science, she says. When Horan’s departed, she deliberated a little before opting to set up in business herself. “And I haven’t regretted a moment since,” she smiles.
Liz is the daughter of the late Dan O’Connell, a retired Royal Navy sailor and renowned local bailiff and his wife Kathleen (nee Dalton), who lived in the Strand. Following her education at Loreto Convent, Liz “eventually left for England like everyone did.” She worked for several years in advertising with the Leicester Mercury newspaper but “always felt the call of home. It was a seaside thing. It never leaves you does, it?!,” she observes.
The effervescent and energetic shop owner returned to Ireland in 1982 and worked as a receptionist with Cork Multi Channel before taking up employment at a Midleton pharmacy in the late 1980’s. From there she transferred to Youghal Pharmacy and eventually to another career change at Horan’s. In due course she acquired health certificates in health food supplements in line with Health Food Institute standards. The rest isn’t so much history as a lengthy future, she hopes.
As the whiff of fresh paint barely lingers in her replenished shop the proprietor looks envyingly young and almost unnervingly healthy. The rows of produce, amassed from around the world, compliment her personal allegiance to a healthy lifestyle that involves regular gym work and walking.
On the shelves
A deep breath and a quick sconce across the shelves reveals such diverse inducements to health as Minuka honey (from New Zealand), Udo’s Choice (a seed oil that assists the heart and skin while deflecting arthritis), coconut water, nettle tea, green tea, three-mint tea, Carrigeen Moss (hugely in demand), cod liver oil, Echinacea (a very popular anti-viral supplement for children and adults to deter colds and flus), organic corn flakes, sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, Quiniona oats (high protein and suitable for coeliacs and people with other gluten-related conditions) and every type of tobacco under the sun. (Ok, I’m joking about the tobacco –it’s just that I remember as a young drinker sharing the odd ‘rollie’ with Liz’s story-rich, humour-laden dad at a bar counter.)
There are so many inducements to health, one feels invigorated just reading the labels and inhaling. There are many protein supplements. USN powder is one of them. It comes in large tins costing €29 that should last about a month. After the first purchase, the customer gets a 10% reduction on all future acquisition of USN, which is an abbreviation of Ultimate Sports Nutrition. People who use the Aura gym use USN and Liz swears by it. “It’s fantastic stuff,” she promises, “It helps repair damaged tissue, extends energy and is also great to help reduce weight as it makes you feel fuller for longer.” There are many other protein supplements amongst dozens and dozens of life-enhancing packs and containers. It’s much more beneficial to visit and inquire than to rely on this visitor’s interpretations.
Customers
Visitors aplenty prevail at Liz’s however and they transcend all ages, social classes and represent equally both genders and perhaps even the occasional indeterminable. “I think when health food outlets first arrived in Ireland, people were naturally uncertain about it all,” Liz reflects. “But now it’s completely different. I find the townspeople generally very interested in health foods and besides that, they bring a real sense of friendship and community when they call to the shop too. I’m also delighted with the location and feel a genuine neighbourly type ambience amongst the business community in this part of town,” she adds.
As a qualified health food practitioner, Liz feels that, generally speaking, many shoppers are being done a great disservice by ‘health advertising’ on television. “People don’t get enough information and end up buying anything with ‘diet’ written on it, instead proper food is what they need,” she explains. “It’s all about carbohydrates really. Do your exercise, take your supplements and you are nearly there. I feel that a lot of what you can buy here would alleviate the eventual need for say, antibiotics and such,” she adds.
Alternatively…
The shop does not just promote health off the shelf. A small side room also accommodates visits from various practitioners from other health arenas. Arranged by appointment only, these include treatments and advice from Catherine Kenneally (Nutritional Therapist), Sara Grenville (Food Sensitivity, Allergy Testing), Jackie Hooton (Indian Head Massage, Insomnia Issues, Reflexology and Allergy Testing) and Martina Whelan (Homeopathy). Now, don’t you feel better already after reading all that?
Liz’s Health Store is at 105 North Main Street. Tele: (024) 25741.
