Sandra McLellan was first elected to Youghal Town Council in 2004 since then she has been active on a range of issues concerning the people of Youghal. Sandra is also Sinn Feins candidate for Cork County Council. A former SIPTU Shop Steward, Sandra has direct experience of traditional industries closing down and leaving towns desolate of good jobs. She believes that job creation is the biggest issue facing East Cork. Sandra is married to Liam and has three children. She is acutely aware of the pressures facing families today.

Sandra has worked at national level in developing Sinn Fein Health policy particularly around the need to provide good quality preventative cancer care.

A member of the Fairtrade Committee, Sandra was instrumental in achieving Fairtrade Status for Youghal. She is Chairperson of the New Enterprise Centre at St. Marys College and is also a member of the Community Alert and the Tidy Towns Taskforce Committees.

Sandra was the Sinn Féin candidate for the Cork East Constituency. She believes job creation is the biggest issue facing East Cork. Sandra was first elected to Youghal Town Council in 2004 and topped the poll on her re-election in 2009.

Sandra McLellan ran unsuccessfully in Cork East in the 2007 general election. She says she was privileged to be the first Sinn Féin Mayor of Youghal in 2009. In 2009 Sandra was elected to Cork County Council.

No Fianna Fail TD was elected in East Cork.

The last time Youghal had a TD from the town was Seán Brosnan

Seán Brosnan (21 December 1916 – 18 April 1979) was an Irish barrister and Fianna Fáil politician from County Cork. He served for 10 years in the Oireachtas, as a Teachta Dála (TD) and as a Senator.

At the 1969 general election, Brosnan was elected to the 19th Dáil as a TD for Cork North East. It was his second attempt — he had been defeated in 1965 — and he lost his seat in the 1973 general election. He was then elected to the 13th Seanad Éireann on the Administrative Panel, but he regained his Dáil seat in a by-election in November 1974 after the death of his Fianna Fáil colleague Liam Ahern.

Brosnan was re-elected in the 1977 election to the 21st Dáil, and also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). MEPs were at that time appointed by national parliaments rather than being elected, and Brosnan was one of a 10-member delegation from the Oireachtas until the first direct elections in 1979.

After his death in 1979, the resulting by-election on 7 November was won for Fine Gael by Myra Barry.

Also congratulations to David Stanton, Tom Barry and Sean Sherlock. Hopefully Youghal will finally get some strong representation and the recognition that the town deserves.

    • Damien says:

I voted for Sandra but I voted because I think she will be good for the country. All this great for the town lark is exactly what’s wrong with this country. The Nation first people

      • Frank Desmond says:

All that is great for the country has not proved worthwhile for Youghal during the “good times”. Please explain why that is now about to change.

        • Damien says:

Not good for Youghal!! Try living in Cobh Pal. I don’t think it’s about to change that’s my point. It’s not about fixing roads and only being about where your from, Nothing’s going to change locally anywhere until the country is sorted out, certainly not in places like Cobh,Youghal etc.

  4. Count 7 says:

Congratulations to Sandra McLellan TD! and her family, and to her proud mother and father and all the Hennessy family in Youghal.

  5. M. Murphy says:

Congratulations to Sandra McLellan, you did the town proud! :D

  6. Colm Carey says:

Congrats to Sandra Mclellan TD and the voters of East Cork as it’s about time someone from Youghal can have a positve input for the long suffering town..

  7. Townman says:

    Well done Sandra

  8. Ryan says:

Congratulations and best of luck for the future.

The people have spoken emphatically, and we’re facing into a very different political landscape. The sun is shining today!

  9. Gerardine Landers says:

    Well done Sandra-best of luck.

  10. Raili says:

    Well done, Sandra! Congratulations!
    Well deserved!

  11. Youghalman2 says:

Sandra, I had my doubts, but you pulled through in the end, I’ve got to give credit where credit is due. Congraulations to you and your team. And the icing on the cake was pushing K O’Keffee out on the last count. It was worth staying up until 1.00am!!
Irrespective of what party you follow, I think the people of Youghal should now get behind Sandra so that we can make this town into what it truly deserves, and make up for all those years of neglect that we got from the other parties that were in power.
    All the best.

    • Jerry Murphy says:

It should be obvious that a considerable number of Youghal voters are already firmly behind Sandra locally and nationally. I now would like to see Sandra’s intentions for her town and East Cork for the next four years published on this medium. So far I am not convinced by copy and paste articles taken directly from Sinn Fein’s national press releases and then posted on youghalonline. A great marketing campaign to capture a great deal of unhappy and confused voters was undertaken by Sinn Fein, however I now await the substance. Jerry Murphy 28th February 2011

    • John Mullane says:

Hollow sentiments indeed from Youghalman2, a self-confessed supporter of internment without trial. Indeed, one who believes that the interned should be starved into silence. Hypocrisy has lost all meaning in Youghal. Well done!

  12. Brendan Rodgers says:

    Congratulations to Sandra McLennan TD,

I have no doubt that she will be very strong in voice and action in Dail Eireann for the people of Cork East and the working class people from all over Ireland who are being exploited and forced into paying the criminal debts and dubious dealings of the corrupt bankers and their cronies, debts that were not the fault of ordinary working people, but who now have to suffer for the corruption of a select circle of wealthy gangsters who have now saddled the ordinary working person with insurmoutable debt and misery for years to come.

    • Paddy Dodgem says:

Typical Irish blame-game mentality. We are all culpable in this one as we were all quite happy to have jobs, wages and opportunities when the economic tide rose. We all as a nation got greedy, full stop. Now stop looking for someone to blame and just get on with it.
