As a new year rolls up its sleeves and thoughts turn towards the 2011 fundraising events, the Emer Casey Foundation continues to make magnificent strides in its tireless efforts to support research into ovarian/uterine cancer, particularly in regard to early detection. Since the last update in August 2010, the Casey family can reveal that the three PhD research students whom it has funded over the past three years have conspired to achieve yet further milestone discoveries.

The three students are Lynda McEvoy (Developing Novel Therapeutic approaches in Chemoresistant Ovarian Cancer Patients), Mairead Murphy (Developing and Validating Diagnostic Serum Based Biomarker Panels in Ovarian Cancer) and Brendan French ( The Isolation, Characterisation and Silencing of Ovarian Cancer Stem Cells.) Through the foundation, they are affiliated to the Dublin-based DISCOVARY consortium, an organisation comprised of several experts across various areas of cancer research.

DISCOVARY comprises gynaecologists, oncologists, pathologists, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, cell biologists, surface chemists, pharmacologists and nurse specialists. It is led by Professor John O’Leary of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. Within this framework, the fellowships have focused on (a) protein signatures in early and recurrent ovarian cancer and (b) developing novel chemotherapy suitable for ovarian cancer patients.

The students’ work has been greatly augmented by the acquisition of  Ireland’s first SOLiD System Sequencing machine, purchased two years ago through the foundation’s assistance. The machine, a technological wonder, is of primary importance in the technology of genomic (gene study) analysis, including DNA research and its acquisition has placed the DISCOVARY consortium in the forefront of oncology research worldwide

Recent, important achievements

In the past year, research student Mairead Murphy “has identified a panel of over 600 proteins that can be identified in the blood of ovarian cancer patients,” says Juliette Casey of Kilcoran Road, wife of retired garda Brendan and mother of five girls of whom Emer was the youngest. Additionally, researcher Brendan French “has made a breakthrough on cancer stem cells and their capacity to generate non-stem cells,” she adds. While the technical appreciation of these achievements is complex and arguably difficult for lay people to comprehend and appreciate fully, the medical significance is, assuredly, highly potent and of global significance.

That the consortium links its research with world-leading professors in America’s George Mason University Centre for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine and with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of California, greatly increases the significance of its findings.

Australia success

Elsewhere, Melbourne’s Emer Casey Memorial 10k, which was held on May 23rd, some 12 hours after the Youghal equivalent, raised Aus$23,000. The family event was spearheaded by former Olympian runner Sonia O’Sullivan and, soon to be in its third year, is already firmly placed as a major event in Australia’s sporting and social calendar. The money raised is allotted to the city’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, which is Australia’s public hospital dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education.

Origins

The Emer Casey Foundation was established in honour of 28 year-old Emer Casey, who lost her life to uterine/ovarian cancer in 2006. Emer was known and loved as an exceptionally vibrant girl, who embraced life and left an indelible, appreciative mark on the lives of all who knew her. An extensive, adventurous traveller and an active, dedicated sports fan –particularly towards Cork hurling and Munster rugby- her energy and consideration also saw her participate in many road races of the kind which now carries her name.

Through the foundation established in her name, Emer’s family, friends and work colleagues have transformed tragedy into a campaign to save others from the deadly affliction. These dedicated volunteers fundraise through a variety of events, including three annual road walk/races in Youghal, Melbourne and London. Their cause is considerably assisted by the tireless contributions and efforts of former employers, Dublin-based solicitors Matheson Ormbsy Prentice. Their combined commitment has raised over €500,000 in four years

There are approximately 334 new cases of ovarian/uterine cancer diagnosed in Ireland every year, with an average fatality rate of two-thirds. It is the leading cause of death from gynaecological malignancy in the western world, yet Ireland still has no national risk assessment or genetic screening programme in place. It has been labelled ‘the silent killer’ as the vague symptoms often mean that by the time the cancer is diagnosed, the tumour has spread beyond the ovaries. All those selflessly involved with the Emer Casey Foundation are inspired by the knowledge that a woman’s chances of surviving ovarian cancer increase from 15% to 80% with early diagnosis.

Future direction

The three-year funding agreement for two of the student fellowships has now expired, while €50,000 remains for Brendan French to continue for another year. The foundation retains the option of renewing funding for his research colleagues but is also considering making financial contribution in other areas instead. These basically aspire towards the areas of “psychological support, fertility treatments for patients with cancer and supportive care,” says Juliette. “We are also intent on raising awareness of the disease at home and abroad in the longterm,” she adds. As 2011 settles, the fight to defeat the ‘silent killer’ may diversify, but it shows no sign of diminishing.

David Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East recently canvassed Youghal town and the surrounding villages. David was joined by Cork County and Youghal Town Councillor, Barbara Murray and members of the recently established East Cork Branch of Young Fine Gael and other supporters.

I was pleased to get the opportunity to meet and engage voters in Youghal and also with voters in my home parish of Ladysbridge and Ballymacoda. It is clear that job creation, job retention and emigration are major issues in the Youghal area, as they are across the whole country. Youghal has been particularly badly hit on the job front with the last manufacturing industry in the town closing down last year,” said Deputy Stanton.

“Job creation is also a major focus of Fine Gael’s five point recovery plan to get Ireland working. We also have comprehensive plans to support small businesses which form the backbone of the Irish economy employing some 700,000 people. It is particularly important that indigenous enterprises in the Youghal and East Cork area are supported to they can continue to develop and offer employment in the locality.

“I am doing my best to support enterprise development in the Youghal area as is Cllr Barbara Murray. Cllr Murray is involved in Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group, which includes representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and FAS, and has been instrumental in securing funding from Enterprise Ireland to develop local industry. I understand that the enterprise centre is currently almost fully occupied and there are plans to extend the centre.

“Tourism is another area which I feel could be instrumental in job creation and the development of Youghal. For some time now I have been promoting the development of a Blackwater tourism initiative which would encompass the East Cork and West Waterford area along the river Blackwater. Youghal’s beautiful waterfront location offers huge potential for tourism and I believe there are plans to construct an eco-boardwalk in the town also.

“Youghal was once a very prosperous town and I fully believe that it can prosper once again. I would like to see an increased focus on enterprise development and tourism in this part of East Cork.

FRIENDLY ENCOUNTER FOR POLITICAL RIVALS ON THE HUSTINGS

IT was a case of crossing paths as opposed to political swords for Cork East General Election Candidates Sandra McLellan of Sinn Féin and Labour’s Seán Sherlock who met on the hustings in Mitchelstown this week.

The political rivals, who have always enjoyed a good working relationship, crossed paths at the square as their canvass teams prepared to hit doorsteps in the town and convey the merits of voting 1 for their respective candidates.

“I have always had the utmost respect for Sandra and we maintain a good friendship and working relationship. I wish her the very best in this election. She is a decent person and will certainly be getting a vote from me on the basis that we need more female representatives in Politics,” said Deputy Sherlock.

As for the campaign itself the sitting Labour Party TD said a he was encountering a mix of issues on the doorstep.

“Infrastructure, Housing and Planning issues are all recurring themes at local level while people are equally exercised about the national issues such as jobs, health and education. The public are very disillusioned and angry at the decisions that have taken by the outgoing government which are having effect on people from all walks of life,” said Deputy Sherlock.

He added; “It’s tough to see so many people struggling and feeling that there is no hope. I will do my utmost to effect real change if I am given the opportunity to return and serve in Dáil Eireann.”

Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has received many complaints about the condition of the Youghal-Tallow road (R634). Speaking in Youghal, Deputy Stanton, has called on both Cork County Council and Waterford County Council to repair this road as a matter of urgency.

Danger at Tallow Road

“I have had reports of near misses where motorists have swerved to avoid potholes and have narrowly missed crashing into other cars. I have also had reports of cars being badly damaged as a result of conditions of the road”.

“I raised the matter of potholed and dangerous roads in the Dail very recently with the then Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey. He said that County Councils should work to repair these roads. It is not acceptable that motorists have to put up with these conditions especially when one takes into account the high cost of motoring today between car tax, insurance and fuel as well as depreciation”.

Over 100 people deemed who brought honour to themselves, their families and their affiliated clubs or institutions had their successes honoured at Youghal Town Council’s inaugural Annual Achievement Awards last Saturday night (Feb 12th).
By Christy Parker / Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com

The ceremony, at the Mall Arts Centre, marked a new direction from the local authority, aimed at limiting the allocation of civic receptions which had, rightly or wrongly, become seen by much of the public as a proliferate way of paying tribute to the town’s more noted achievers. Presumably, unique and incredibly high achievements (oh, say an Oscar award or an Olympic gold medal sort of thing…) will remain in contention for a full-blown civic reception.

Meanwhile last Saturday’s occasion recognised accomplishments throughout 2010 but will henceforth be held on a six monthly basis, with the next ceremony in June.

The honoured-to-be and, their families and friends mingled together over light refreshments in the centre’s reception area prior to convening in the upstairs auditorium at 8 p.m. In turn, each recipient was summoned to the stage by Mayor Mary Linehan Foley and Deputy Mayor Eoin Coyne, where every individual received a signed certificate recognising their success. Local man David Joyce was also on stage to assist the process, which took approximately 40 minutes.

The vast majority of awards recognised sporting successes, but this may –or may not -alter with increased public awareness. As the mayor explained, the system rotates simply on a nomination bases. “All that needs to be done is someone to nominate to the town council or an individual councillor whoever they consider worthy of an award and we’ll take it from there,” she tressed from the stage.

Recipients of the Annual Achievement Awards 2010 were as follows (details provided by organisers):

Sinn Féin Candidate Sandra McLellan has said there is a better, fairer way to reduce the deficit and deal with the banks. Our alternative seeks to stimulate the economy, protect and create jobs and reform the tax system.  We would target cuts at the top of society — beginning with the salaries of Government Ministers, TDs and top civil servants.

In the upcoming general election we will be presenting a real programme of recovery which will:

1.    Regenerate the economy by investing in a major job creation programme to get Ireland back to work.

2.    Reverse the savage cuts and prioritise frontline services.

3.    Burn the bondholders in Anglo and wind it up.

4.    Reduce the deficit by taxing the wealthiest and eliminating wasteful spending.

5.    Provide for a root and branch reform of the political system; including abolishing the Seanad in its current form, reforming the electoral system, and bringing forward a constitution aimed at producing a genuine republican form of Government which puts an end to political elites and empowers Irish citizens.

6.    Ensure the proper use of Ireland’s natural resources for the common good.

7.    End the two-tier health and education systems.

8.    Guarantee continued support for the Peace Process, the Good Friday Agreement and seek to enhance outreach to the unionist community.

People are looking for a new kind of politics. That is what Sinn Féin offers.

Cllr McLellan is calling on the voters of Cork east to make a stand – There is a better way

McLellan Rubbishes FF Claims on Farm Tax

The Sinn Féin candidate in Cork East, Sandra McLellan, has rubbished a claim by Fianna Fáil candidate Kevin O’Keeffe that Sinn Féin’s tax  proposals constitute a threat to farmers. She said there is no proposal to tax farm land.

McLellan said: “Councillor O’Keeffe has a hard neck attacking Sinn Féin over our policies for rural Ireland given the savage attacks which his government has implemented right across rural Ireland in order to bail out Fianna Fáil’s friends the failed banking and  property speculators.

“We have clear well thought out proposals including a comprehensive document detailing how the agriculture  food sector can become one of the  engines of growth if people reject the austerity policies of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Labour Party.

“We will also, as the only serious All Ireland party through our MEP and our Minister for Agriculture in the north Michelle Gildernew alongside a strengthened team of Sinn Féin TDs in Leinster House, be fighting for small to medium farmers during the review of the Common  Agricultural Policy.

“Councillor O’Keeffe is deliberately misleading farmers with regard to  our tax proposals. In our manifesto we propose to introduce a 1% tax on all assets of over €1 million “excluding working farmland.”    In other words we have no intention whatsoever of taxing farmers in  that way because we understand that the market value of farm land  often bears little relation to the income that farmers derive from  it.”

HEALTHCARE IN IRELAND – THERE IS A BETTER WAY’

Launching Sinn Féin’s health proposals ‘Healthcare in Ireland – there is a better way’ Sinn Féin Candidate Sandra McLellan said that the current two-tier system must be replaced with a new system based on equality of access for all based on need alone.

McLellan said:

“The healthcare system needs root and branch reform. We need a system where access to care at all levels is equitable and based on medical need alone. The two-tier system is inherently inequitable and inefficient and it has to go. Sinn Féin has comprehensive proposals to transform our healthcare services. We seek a new system based on public service and social solidarity.

“Our core proposal is for a new universal public healthcare system for Ireland that provides care to all free at the point of delivery, on the basis of need alone, and funded from general fair and progressive taxation. We would establish a Health Funding Commission to help plan the transition to the new system.

“In the short term we would abolish prescription charges for medical card patients and introduce measures to reduce the cost of drugs by tackling waste and profiteering.

“We would restore Ministerial and Departmental responsibility for public health services, remove the excessive bureaucracy of the HSE and cap salaries at 100,000 euros.

“We would enshrine the right to healthcare in the Constitution and establish a Health Ombudsman.

“The downgrading of local hospitals must be reversed. They must be allowed to play their proper role as providers of a full range of care, including emergency services.

“The State subsidising of the private for-profit healthcare sector must be ended and all public money allocated for healthcare must be spent in the public system to deliver care on the basis of need alone.”

Commenting on the health policies of the other parties, Sandra McLellan  said:

“Fianna Fáil is defending the indefensible by calling for the status quo to continue – not surprising given that their new leader is a former Minister for Health & Children who conceived the failed HSE.

“Fine Gael and Labour are advocating a health insurance model which has the potential to give insurance companies a determining role in the delivery of health services.
“There are also differences between the Fine Gael and Labour proposals and we have no idea what a hybrid Fine Gael/Labour government health policy would look like.

Irish language and Fine Gael

Sinn Fein launches Irish language proposals at Fine Gael HQ

Speaking this morning after the  launch of  Sinn Fein’s Irish language Proposals

Sinn Fein Cork East Candidate Sandra McLellan said

“In contrast to Fine Gael, Sinn Fein is committed to the protection and restoration of the Irish language. Rather than taking measures that will contribute to the dissolution of the of the Irish, we believe the state should in fact be taking constructive steps to strengthen, support and encourage it’s growth.

“Unlike Fine Gael’s proposal to de- prioritise Irish by removing it from the second level education system as compulsory, we in Sinn Fein commit ourselves 100% to its promotion.

“We have today launched a list of proposals which we believe if implemented, would further protect the Irish language. One among many of those proposed is that there should be an Aire Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta in Cabinet with responsibility to deliver on the 20 year strategy.

“Equality is an integral part of a democratic society and this, as we have stated in our party’s manifesto, includes upholding the rights of Irish -language speakers.

“We believe that the future of the Irish language depends upon thecontinuing existence of sustainable Gaeltacht communities where Irish remains the primary language of the community. These communities must be protected, supported and developed. That is why we advocate proper resourcing into the education system and are promoting the right to be educated through the Irish language.
“We also believe the right to education through Irish should be constitutionally and legally enshrined as one of the primary steps in protecting it’s existence for generations to come.”
