Lower Aghada Pier Development Group
Re: Annual General meeting of Lower Aghada Pier Development Committee
Dear Mariner,
I write to you to confirm that the Annual General Meeting of our group will take place on Wednesday 16th. February 2011 at 8.30pm in Lower Aghada Tennis and Sailing Club, Lower Aghada, Co. Cork.
Our aim is to develop the facilities available at Lower Aghada Pier. Our plans include installing a landing pontoon at the Pier which will also include access for people with disabilities.
At this meeting we will outline our progress to date together with a detailed explanation of our plans for the future development of the pier at Lower Aghada. Over the past number of months we have been working hard to get commitments from the various stakeholders in the pier.
Just this week we met with senior representatives of Cork Co. Council and Port of Cork and have received very encouraging news from both parties with a commitment of support for our proposed plans for the Pier. It is our intention to make a formal presentation on the night of the AGM of our progress to date.
We would encourage you to attend this meeting as our group is there to develop the pier for all of it’s users and the entire Community of Cork Harbour and we welcome any support or comments which you may have in relation to this.
We also have our website up and running at www.saveaghadapier.com so why not log on and see the up to date news on whats happening at Aghada Pier.
Having held a very successful Table Quiz in 2010plans are well underway to hold a Race Night on Friday 25t. March at Rosies Bar in Lower Aghada at 8.30pm. Our committee are currently looking for support by way of sponsorship of the event programme as well as the buying of horses for the night. All support will be greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Shane Russell.

An unnamed airport worker said a colleague, who had been dispatched to the edge of the runway to meet and greet passengers off the plane, reported that four walking wounded climbed out of the wreckage.

Paul Burke from Inch, Killeagh, Independent Candidate for Cork East
The country needs change and I would like to be one of those who can help to do it.
So, who is Paul Burke? I am an Australian who moved to Ireland in 1993. I have been a partner/owner of a Land Surveying business in Cork for the last 16 years. I am married to Margaret (from Wexford) and we have 3 daughters who currently attend local schools.
Margaret went to Australia in the 80’s in the last big recession. We moved back to Ireland to raise our family, believing Ireland was the best place to do this. Decent education, a sense of community and good standard of living were all good reasons to settle here.
Like many people over the last few years, I have become very disillusioned with the ruling political parties and the way in which they have been running the country. A few too many backroom deals and not enough honesty and openness with the people.
It’s Time We Acted Responsibly
Send the political parties a message. Vote me No.1 and let them know they are only your 2nd choice.
There has been too much of the “Pothole Politician”, more concerned with their own backyard than the health of the nation as a whole. Politicians need to be acting in the national interest, not just for personal gain.
There are so many things that need to be addressed and they can’t all be done overnight. We must reduce the size of government; it is much too large and expensive. We need to take closer control of the banking sector, after all many are nationalised and belong to us. We need to get on top of wasteful spending by government departments. The list goes on and on.
Where do we start? What can you, an individual do? The old saying “a new broom sweeps clean” comes to mind. Bring in new ideas, new people. Break the hold the current political parties have over who gets what job and where.
Over the years I have served on many, and varied, committees and councils.Charitable groups such as St Vincent De Paul. At a local level, I have served as Vice Chairman of Youghal Comhaltas. At a National level, I was both Vice President and President of the Irish Institution of Surveyors. At European level, I was the Irish Delegate to CLGE, the European Committee of Surveyors.
I have run a small business for the last 16 years. In the current economic climate, things are tough all over but hopefully we have turned the corner. Now we need to do the right things to get back on track and get Ireland moving again.

THE TREACY FAMILY are celebrated 110 years in business this Saturday 12th Feb 2011. Family, friends and customers are looking forward to the big birthday party with music by Celtic Invasion. This pub in Youghal has been in the same family since 1901, when it was bought by Michael Treacy, a local farmer. Previously, the pub had been in the ownership of the O’Mahony family, but it is not known how long it had been in operation. The pub is in the oldest part of Youghal, with Walter Raleigh’s house, which dates from the Elizabethan plantations of the 1560’s, to the rear of it, and thus this pub may have been in operation for several centuries.
When it was bought in 1901, it was a one-roomed bar-cum-grocery, but the Treacy’s extended it by buying four adjoining cottages and converting the former homes into drinking quarters.
In the 1940’s, Michael’s son Joe Treacy became licensee. As the business expanded, the farm was sold. Joe and his wife Maureen continued with the grocery and expanded the bar to include a singing lounge and dance floor. The singing and dancing continues today. The grocery is gone, and is now an off-licence with an eclectic range of beers and spirits and wines. It also has its own deli counter supplying homemade food to go, or to eat in the bar.
Joe’s son Michael Treacy is the current licensee and he is extremely proud of the pub and the central role it plays in the social life of Youghal. Treacy’s is involved in sponsoring lots of local clubs.
As the bar has extended, the décor has been kept in harmony with the pitch-pine of the original premises. Throughout the bar, the walls are covered with photographs of Youghal in times gone by. When the Treacy’s were celebrating their centenary as licensed traders in 2001, all drinks were sold at a penny a pint or a glass.
Over the years, drinking habits have changed, says Michael, with very few customers now asking for the traditional order of “a large whiskey and a pint”. He says:
”As well as drinking less whiskey, people now drink later in the evening. There was a time when I used to have a customer who would come in when we opened in the morning and he would order six whiskeys with a raw egg placed in each of them!”
