LISMORE TOWN COUNCIL is writing to the regional roads authority in Tramore in search of a ‘logical explanation as to why the National Roads Authority write road surface signs upside down!’ The move follows the failure by the NRA to respond to an earlier request for information at the behest of Cllr Bernard Leddy at last November’s meeting.

The councillor was exasperated by ‘incorrect use the English language’ as exemplified by such notices as:  ‘Stop To Prepare’ when read from the top down. He cited ‘Ahead Entrance Concealed’ as a more recent manifestation.

Town Clerk Karen Hallahan said her inquires failed to find any reference to protocol within NRA generated literature but that the road signage does conform to “national standards.” Cllr Leddy said the methodology was unknown on the Continent and argued that a driver without English as their first language could have come to grief by they had deciphered the message! The town clerk’s suggestion that the regional offices be asked to comment, rather than repeating the exercise with the NRA, was accepted.

Youghal Utd  6   -   Avondale Utd  2

Youghal Utd moved to second place in the table after this comprehensive victory at Ardrath Park. This was the first time this season that Youghal could draw from a full squad of players and it showed in a dominant display. Youghal spurned a number of opportunities early on in the game before finally breaching the tough Avondale rearguard marshaled by the excellent Aisling Fitzgerald. From Holly Twomey’s short corner Rachel Galvin returned the ball first time to the striker whose excellent cross found Rachel Geary unmarked inside the area. Rachel controlled superbly before slotting the ball home into the net. For almost the entire half, Youghal pressed for a second. Holly Twomey continued to torment Avondale down the right assisted by the outstanding Claire Keniry with Amy Benaim, Rachel Geary and Rachel Galvin all having chances to extend the lead. Avondale’s resilience was rewarded shortly before the break when a fortunate rebound off the referee fell to Avondale forward Jane ? who finished superbly.

Despite the 1-1 scoreline, Youghal had a superb first half playing their best football of the season. That form continued early after the break when Holly Twomey cut in from the right, beating two defenders and a great pass found Amy Benaim. Amy’s first-time attempt got caught under her feet and when the ball squirmed loose Rachel Geary again pounced to make it 2-1 wit a looping effort. Rachel Galvin then made it 3-1 again from a Holly Twomey assist. However, plucky Avondale caused nerves in the Youghal ranks when Aisling Fitzgerald struck from distance to score a beautiful goal, reducing the deficit to 3-2. With Ally McCormack’s influence growing down the Avondale right the game was now in the balance. With Youghal visibly tiring Avondale pressed for an equaliser with the influential Aisling Fitzgerald pushing into midfield. All of Youghal’s back line stood firm and their commitment allowed Rachel Galvin to score a further two goals for Youghal to break Avondale’s resolve. Her first came courtesy of a slight deflection. Set up by Holly Twomey her shot from the edge of the area spun inside the right post. The number 7 added a second and needed no assistance as she outran the visitor’s defence and struck an unstoppable shot beyond the despairing keeper.

The game now looked safe at 5-2 but great credit to Avondale who continued to test Youghal’s resolute defence. A brilliant interchange of passing between Rachel Galvin, Claire Keniry and Holly Twomey should have resulted in another score but Holly’s well placed effort beat both the keeper and the post. Youghal scored a sixth with the last kick of the game when Emma Varney’s low, hard cross was turned in by the tireless Amy Benaim. A great performance that saw hard work matched by great passing and finishing to collect a well-deserved three points. Squad: Stephanie Fitzgerald, Sarah Roche, Katie Manning, Marie-Louise Keane, Jen Geary, Rachel Galvin, Rachel Geary, Claire Keniry, Emily Roche, Holly Twomey, Amy Benaim, Ellen Benaim, Emma Varney, Lynda Galvin.

After a great start with an opening win in Ballynoe against St Catherine’s, there was disappointment with a defeat to Glenville, but this is Youghal’s opportunity to get things back on track in their first home game of the 2011 League, so it is hoped that plenty people turn up to cheer on the lads.

Youghal will be disappointing not to have been able to hold on to the lead last week in this cup tie but it could have been much worse for them when in the last kick of the game a shot hit the goal post which would have been so cruel for united if it went in. It was a very good cup tie and both teams gave their all. Sean Keannelly gave united the lead in the second half after 23mins when he shot home from a corner but ten minutes from time again from another corner David Byrne rose high to head home the goal the home side probable deserved on the day with the chances they had. It should be a very interesting game on Sunday with very little between the teams although united will have to raise their game if they want to get through in this tie.

Youghal United

Youghal United

With home advantage and the wide spaces of Ardrath Park this just might help united on the the day . This is the second time in the clubs history that they have reached this stage in the cup, Ten years ago they had to travel away to Fanned United in Donegal but lost out on a 1.`scoreline , there are five players in the squad for Sundays game who were also involved in that game ten years ago, they are Allen and Darren Hennessey, Sean Keaneally, Paul Moylan and David Kearns who played outfield that day and now is the current goalkeeper and has certainly proved his worth with some outstanding saves in this cup run which has kept united in the competition, with the glory of the semi final awaiting both teams Sundays game should be as last weeks one, the winner goes on to play either Belgrove or Cherry Orchard who also replay their tie on Sunday.

Filmmaker Mike Hannon’s ‘My Beamish Boy’ is now available to view. Youghal native Mike is the son of Finbarr Hannon of Harmony Music and Drama. ‘My Beamish Boy’ was awarded the Made in Cork Award for Best Short Film at the Corona Cork Film Festival 2009, and was screened at the Chicago Irish Film Festival, 2010.

Mike Hannon’s half hour documentary “My Beamish Boy” is now available to watch online at the following link@ http://vimeo.com/mikehannon/beamish and on www.youghalonline.com. Press the play button below to watch the award winning film.

My Beamish Boy from Mike Hannon.

The much-loved two hundred year old brewery has shut its gates forever. As they reminisce, the ex-workers must come to terms with their grief at its closure. Suffused with bittersweet memories and wry affection, these are the stories of the famous Beamish and Crawford Brewery. All things must end, but the human spirit persists.

Part funded by Cork City Council Arts Office, the documentary is an affectionate piece of social history, recording the anecdotes, memories and feelings of many of the Beamish workers, as well as the unique traditions and character of the brewery itself.

The film was shot in 2009 around the time of the brewery’s closure and features creative contributions from some of the Beamish staff, including David Creedon’s photographs of the brewery interior. Johnny McCarthy, who was a fourth generation Beamish worker, and his son Cormac  play flute and cello respectively, with Hugh McCarthy (cello) on the original soundtrack which was composed by Irene Buckley and on an original song, My Lovely Smiling Beamish Boy, written by John Spillane for the film. The documentary was produced by Pat Comerford.

Eileen now lives and works in Youghal, Co Cork. Eileen feels being an Artist has made every day an adventure, whereby she strives to explore the subject that she wants to represent, in whatever media she feels is appropriate. Eileen will work for months on an idea, or a feeling, by exploring it, following instinct, and relying on years of experience to create unique images that always excite, whether they are mixed media portraits, or an inner journey.

Will is a skilled Photographer, with over 25 year’s experience creating images that portray a wide range of subject matter in his own unique way. Born in Belfast, he moved to Oxford where he gained his degree, and studied Photography. Will returned to Ireland in 2003 and is based in Youghal, Co Cork.. Will’s work has been eagerly sought by Commercial business’s and by collectors alike.

Will has an unconventional way of looking at things and makes the ordinary look extraordinary. With a painterly look and feel to his images, the end result shows how he captures the texture, form, composition and beauty of the subject. In his series of ‘Irish rocks’, he invites the viewer to be amazed at the shapes and colours of our natural environment.

Both Eileen and Will have exhibited widely, both in Ireland and the UK, and most recently in the Cork Vision Centre, Cork City.

Business is Good – Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 (28th February – 13th March)
Contrary to what might be expected during the recession, Fairtrade sales continue to grow in Ireland. In 2010 consumer spending on Fairtrade Certified products grew by an impressive 17%, from €118 million in 2009 to €138 million in 2010.  Ireland now has one of the highest per capita spends on Fairtrade Certified products anywhere in the world.
And in 2011 this growth is set to continue:
•    the MACE retail group has just announced that 120 of their outlets are converting to Fairtrade Certified coffee provided by Bewley’s,
•    Java Republic Coffee Company has seen growth of 7% in their Fairtrade coffee sales
•    the Insomnia Coffee Company has announced the conversion of all its hot chocolate drinks to Fairtrade
•    Other initiatives like the conversion of all Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream to Fairtrade by the end of the year support this trend

Stephen Boadi and Isaac Baido from Ghana present a gift to Michael Beecher, Chairman of the Youghal Fairtrade.

Peter Gaynor, Executive Director with Fairtrade Mark Ireland, said; “It’s good to see that people in Ireland continue to support initiatives like Fairtrade. Volunteer groups all around the country have committed their time over many years and we are delighted with how sales are holding up in the teeth of the recession.”
Irish people are being asked to ‘Show Off Your Label’ for Fairtrade Fortnight! The campaign will be supported by guests from Ghana, Isaac Baidoo and Stephen Boadi, who are cocoa farmers as well as by Miguel Mateo, a member of a Fairtrade coffee Coop in Guatemala.
Ireland has the highest number of Fairtrade Towns groups per capita of any country in the world. There are now 48 officially recognised Fairtrade Towns and Cities that have met the Fairtrade Towns criteria. Donegal and Carrick-on-Shannon will be officially recognised Fairtrade Towns during Fairtrade Fortnight.  And 30 more towns are seeking Fairtrade Town status – adding up to a total of 78 volunteer Fairtrade Town groups around the country.
