Derek Kiely Reports

The Youghal Intermediate Footballers are very much part of the night and fitness trainer and Intermediate player Ken Dempsey said “It’s been a real pleasure training with the lads over the Winter months and to spice things up we had some boxing training in some of our sessions and after speaking to Kevin Walsh at St Coleman’s Boxing Club in Shanagarry we decided to have the night for this great cause and as the night draws closer, some of the lads are getting a little nervous now, but we are all looking forward to it and I hope we get a great crowd to support the St Vincent De Paul”.

The event was launched in Club Aras the home of Eochaill Cumann Lúthchleas Gael by Mayor of Youghal Town Council Mary Linehan Foley who praised both Youghal GAA Club and everyone else involved in the ‘Charity Boxing Night’ in a bid to raise funds for the St Vincent De Paul and said “The work that St Vincent De Paul do is fantastic and the money that goes in all goes straight back into the Youghal Community which is brilliant and I want to praise Youghal GAA, The Cara Ambulance Service, St Coleman’s Boxing Club and John Long Buses (Sponsors) for their great work for this very worthy cause”.

Dave Kilgannon the Chairman of Eochaill Cumann Lúthchleas said “We are delighted at Youghal GAA Club to have nights like these, because not only will it be a great night of boxing, but also because it is really for a great cause. Nights like these are very important to the Community and I along with many people have a huge amount of admiration for the work the St Vincent De Paul do and we are delighted to be able to host a night like this. We at Eochaill want to contribute all we can to the community of Youghal and as a club want to continue to be part of the fabric of the Town of Youghal”

So as the bell rings for round one on March the 18th the hope is that everyone will come along to support this very worthy fundraiser.

The night will be an official boxing night, with medical testing, official referee’s and timing.

A winner will be chosen from Garryvoe/Ladysbridge/Killeagh area to represent Talking Heads Toastmasters in the next round

Garryvoe, 01 March, 2011 — Talking Heads Toastmasters joins more than 12,500 Toastmasters clubs from around the world participating in the 2011 Toastmasters International Speech Contest this month. It is the world’s largest speech contest, with more than 30,000 presenters in 113 countries vying to become the next World Champion of Public Speaking. The contest is free and open to the public.

“Speech contests are a unique and exciting part of the Toastmasters program,” says Pat Johnson, Toastmasters 2010-2011 International President. “These competitions challenge members to push beyond their clubs and fine-tune their skills. In a club, members are evaluated; in a contest, members are judged.”

The International Speech Contest begins at the local club level and proceeds through the area, division, district and final levels. Eighty-two district semifinalists compete during the four-day 2011 Toastmasters International Convention held Aug. 17-20, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at Bally’s Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. Nine contenders make it to the final round on Aug. 20, where the winner is crowned the Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking.

“I enjoy the “buzz “that entering a contest gives me. To me it is in some way equivalent, in a small way of course, to what it must be like for sports people who, even if the sport is difficult or dangerous,s can’t resist the challenge. Each  time I say as I’m struggling with a speech and particularly at the further levels “Why do I put myself through this?”and then I enjoy it if goes well and if I feel that I have connected with the audience.  Basically,I suppose, I like to be talking and and the speech contest gives me a wide audience!,” says Bernadette Hegarty, 2010 Talking Heads Toastmasters speech contest winner.

To enter the contest, a person must be an active member of Toastmasters International and have completed at least six speeches from Toastmasters’ Competent Communication manual, the first manual in the Toastmasters communication program. All participant speeches must be original, presented in English and last five to seven minutes. Judging criteria include originality, speech content, organization, voice quality, gestures and timing.

See interviews with Toastmasters 2010 World Champion of Public Speaking, David Henderson, along with highlights of the past winning speeches on Toastmasters’ YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/Toastmasters.

Additional details about the Toastmasters International Speech Contest and 2011 Convention will be announced in early April. District winners will be announced in early August and posted on the Toastmasters Web site. For more information about Toastmasters International contests, please visit toastmasters.org/contest.

Talking Heads Toastmasters meets at the Garryvoe Hotel (usually the Strand suite though reception can guide you) in Garryvoe, East Cork every second Tuesday at 8pm. The International speech and evaluation competition will be held on 22nd March 2011 at 8pm in the Garryvoe Hotel.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Men Should Weep

by

Ena Lamont Stewart

Ena Lamont Stewart’s Men Should Weep, was voted one of the top hundred plays of the last century in the NT millennium poll.

Despite cramped tenement living and the turmoil of seven children, there is laughter and strength in the Morrison family. Tough and tender mother Maggie, one of the great stage roles for women, just about holds together her unruly brood against wretched poverty.

But sniping neighbours, the flight of daughter Jenny, and the unexpected return to their overcrowded quarters of Maggie’s son and his sexually restless wife erodes her spirit. And then, just as temporary employment for beloved husband John affords a decent Christmas, wayward Jenny returns with new-found wealth, offering them the chance of escape and one big moral dilemma.

‘Superb…A vivid portrait of poverty. I loved this play.’ Daily Mail

‘Wholly engrossing.’ The Times

‘This telling combination of pathos and comedy is Men Should Weep at its best.’ Financial Times

‘A superb, surprisingly uplifting production…One of the dramatic highlights of the year.’ Daily Telegraph

Jack Nolan Wins Winter League.
It was a trying winter with many days blown off the water but through all the bad weather we have sailed whenever possible. The league was a close competition right up to the very end with only 1 or 2 points between the leaders. Edward Coyne (the rookie) gave many great performances winning his share of races with skill bringing pride home in second place overall.

Adrian Lee held his own, and for a while was looking to be the favourite but, due to some problems with his Mirror, in the final two weeks of the league he dropped back to third place. Jack – the man who started strong and finished strong brought home the victory and the 1st prize of a VHF Radio Course.

Lessons and limits were learned in every race but most of all the contenders had fun. Now we all get to relax and have some fun before the Summer League starts in April > hope to see you all for the races – fun and great experience.

Alternative Rockers PALKO homecoming gig in The Marine Bar, Youghal on March 5th 2011

Following a hugely successful year in 2010, Cork band Palko are about to wrap up their first Irish tour of 2011.  Kicking off their tour in Roisín Dubh Galway on January 27, Palko have since travelled the length and breadth of the country performing in Whelan’s Dublin, Bakers Place Limerick, The Workman’s Club and The Grand Social Dublin and Horan’s Tralee.

Cork’s leading alternative rockers Palko set to play at The Marine Bar, Youghal.

Cork’s leading alternative rockers Palko set to play at The Marine Bar, Youghal.

Palko are now gearing up for what will surely be the highlight of their Irish tour with an explosive homecoming gig in The Marine, Youghal on March 5.With two band members, Terry O’Brien [lead vocals & guitar] and Mark Flavin [drums] originally from Youghal this is set to be a very memorable night.

Palko created quite a stir at the end of last year when they released the single ‘You’re Wrong’ which was available as a free download just before budget day.  This release is a “fine example of pure punk pop” but the lyrics are open to interpretation.  When pressed on the issue of the timely release of ‘You’re Wrong’ Palko refused to be drawn on the matter with lead singer Terry O’Brien stating:  “I never wanted to be in a band that was politically motivated… by leaving the lyrics to the listener’s interpretation I have the freedom to write about what ever I want. People can read into it what they will”.

The complete line up of Palko is as follows: Terry O’Brien [vocals & guitar], Brian Leach [lead guitar], Mark Flavin [drums] and Barry ‘Tessy’ Quealy [bass]. Palko cut their teeth gigging on the lively music scene in Cork city and county.  Following the release of their debut album Dreamers which was met with a multitude of positive reviews from both fans and music media alike, Palko decided it was time to jump the county bounds and hit the road. This is certainly a band worth watching out for.

Press Quotes

”Palko are full of energy and pulsate every note to its limit on this album” – Music Review Unsigned
