Youghal Railway Station - Back Then

“The old railway station in Youghal has been lying idle for many decades now. The station is very well situated close to the beach area and is a great location for development of a tourist amenity. If it were developed for this purpose it would surely prove an added attraction for visitors to the Youghal area.

“I have written to Iarnrod Eireann to gauge their interest in developing the old station. I think the feasibility of developing the station as a tourist amenity such as an aquarium,a museum or a similar facility. I believe that this deserves serious consideration.

Deputy Stanton concluded by stressing the need to develop the full tourism potential of Youghal and that he believes every possible avenue to attract tourist to the area should be explored.

This is a derelict site. Therefore, should a dereliction notice not be put on it and followed up by a Compulsory Purchase Order? And should this not have been done many years ago, and why wasn’t it? Again, more passing the buck!

    • Mary says:

Dont get me started. This area has been ignored by the local and county council for years because no one has the courage to take on CIE. This is youghals biggest eye sore and it is just terrible that no one in power cares. Please do something soon. Mary

Stanton & Co better make sure we don’t experience a repeat of the debacle of recent years with the existing public toilets adjacent to the Railway Station and Claycastle remaining closed over Easter and the May Bank Holiday Weekends (A lovely welcome for tourists and locals alike), before fantasising about showers on the strand. This will be further exacerbated this year due to Tides Bar and Restaurant closure and no nearby business toilets open during daylight hours. Also worth mentioning is the lack of refuse bins on the main thoroughfare of the strand along the promenade. As long as members of the public like me have to raise and highlight such obvious issues we can forget about tourism as a realistic source of revenue to our town. Get the basics right, manage them in a cost effective manner, and then move on with the bigger ideas.

You must be joking! There is no tourist related business open during daylight hours adjacent to the finest beach in Ireland? What kind of tourist policies do you have?

      • Michael Tuohy, Cork says:

Just to add to what you have stated, as far as I am aware there is little or no tourist related businesses or facilities available along the beautiful waterfront by the quays in the centre of the town. I parked there on Saturday and went looking for a bucket and spade for the young lad and a ice cream for herself, and spent a good hour and a half searching. This is not good enough for a town that is supposed to be tourist friendly. At least if you are not going to provide facilities close to where they are needed, then why not put up signs or information boards saying where they are located, how far etc. I would expect a bit more from a town that has earned a lot of money from visitors down the years but does not seem to be putting it back in.

        • Patrick says:

And whoi in the name of God gave permission for those pink apartments. Blocks the entire view of the sea as your coming in to Youghal.

Its amazing, Youghal and surrounding areas have more going for it than tourist hotspots like Kinsale etc.

Yet the town is dead. Why is this? Has there been no plan down through the years? Why has no companies set up in Youghal in the last 15 years?
