THE 8TH ANNUAL ANTIQUE FAIR AND ROAD SHOW in aid of the Lourdes Invalid Fund took place on Sunday April 3rd (Mothers Day) at the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal. The late Mary Neville, of Neville’s Drapery, Youghal, who passed away at a young age two years ago, established the event. It is now being overseen by her family and friends. The antique fair raises money to help the Cloyne Diocesan Pilgrimage to send local pilgrims to Lourdes each June.

About ten dealers from throughout Munster appraised household items, including crockery, jewellery, coins, old bank notes, books and even furniture. Antique dealer Nicholas Loughnan from Loughnan Antiques, South Main St was on hand to give his expert valuation on items that people had found hidden in their attic or sitting around the house. This annual fundraiser has proven to be an enjoyable event for all age groups, while raising much need funds to send the sick and invalids from the locality, on the annual diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes, a time treasured by all for the peace and wellness it affords them.

At a special ceremony held in the Walter Raleigh Hotel on Sunday (3rd April 2011), a cheque for €1,240 was presented to Elaine Landy of the Jack and Jill Foundation. The money raised was the proceeds of a special charity dance organised by Margaret Carey, Maura and Theresa Joyce all of Community Radio Youghal.

Elaine Landy of the Jack and Jill Foundation thanked Margaret, Maura and Theresa and the people of East Cork and West Waterford for their very generous support for the charity. She said the fundraiser will not only help the Jack and Jill Foundation it will also raise the profile of the charity.
The CRY ladies said they heard an interview on their local radio station, CRY, about the charity and decided to help this worthy charity, and help they did by organising a dance in the Walter Raleigh Hotel. The staff of the hotel, the manager Michael Davitt and owner Richard Voke, were more than helpful to the cause and deserve great credit as does Michael Sheehan and Tony Coffey who helped in the auction of the Cork and Waterford signed jerseys. Also a big thanks to musicians John Mullen and Pat Tobin for entertaining the large crowds who wanted to share the goodwill towards the Jack and Jill Foundation.

The minute you hear the name Bob Rock, you automatically think of Weddings, Events and Youghal. His name and work is synonymous with photography. Now after 10 years since he retired from his well know photographic studio at 126 North Main St.(now Eamonn O’Brien’s Gallery 126) he has decided to launch his own website http://bobrock.zenfolio.com to showcase his wonderful work. The website has several different galleries, Wildlife, On the shore, Lakes, Fells & Islands and even one gallery dedicated to Youghal Landscapes.

Bob says on the website showcasing his diverse work “Photography has been a large part of most of my life and provided me with a living for thirty years. Now retired, digital is my new thing,it provides me with a degree of control never obtainable with film. My images are intended to be easy on the eye. My criteria when assessing an image, is simply, would I like it on my wall?”
Bob has the eye of the professional photographer and with all the ‘buttons and things’ on the modern digital camera has his own complete digital darkroom! Retirement has given Bob Rock more time to pursue and showcase his particular love of landscape and nature photography. Side by side with his art Bob enjoys spending quality time with his wife Teresa, daughters and grandchildren.
The retired photographer had a very successful exhibition of his work a few years ago at the Methodist Church Hall as a fundraiser for the South Abbey National School, Youghal, where all his prints sold.
If you are interested in one of his limited edition why not take a look at the fabulous images on the website where they would make wonderful gift. The prints come without a frame so you can chose your own colours to suit your own needs but Bob highly recommends the framemaking service at the St. Raphael Centre, Youghal. The prints come in a range of different sizes on high quality photographic paper and are very reasonably priced.
All images on screen are low resolution. If you would like to purchase a full resolution archival quality print up tp 19″ X 13″ I will be happy to oblige, just send an email or phone your requirements.
Best regards, Bob Rock.

Large numbers of people turned up to support the Keith Phelan Appeal at JD’s Bar in South Main St. Youghal last Friday night (1st April 2011). A great night of top class entertainment was enjoyed by all with bands such as Arkadia, Bog the Donkey, Miss Jones and of course the regular duo of Martin and Jason. Proprietors Colin and Marian Doyle said, they were “delighted to host the event for the Keith Phelan Fund. The customers and the townspeople always come out in force to help Keith”.

The Phelans family are attempting to raise enough money to bring Keith to the XCell-Center Dusseldorf, Germany where they believe he could benefit from stem cell treatment. The funds will aid local boy Keith Phelan from Raheen Park, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, to travel to Germany for an operation, in the hope that it will improve his quality of life.

Eochaill Óg VHI Cúl Camp 2011 – The Camp That Put’s Children First.
Eochaill Óg are holding their 2011 VHI Cúl Camp this year from the 15th – 19th August. The organisers have certainly pulled out all the stops to make Eochaill Óg’s camp simply the best camp of the summer. They have set out three main principles that will help them achieve this objective.
Safety First: The first priority for any organisation involved with children is their safety. For the duration of the camp, a fully qualified team of ten health professionals, including nurses, paramedics and paediatric nurses will be on hand to nurse away any bumps and bruises that the little ones might get. The team is being headed up by Paediatric Nurse Mary Roche and she has set out stringent best practices should First Aid be required. Eochaill Óg’s Cul Camp is certainly unique in this. No other summer camp in the area has put in such a valuable resource and it is a testament that Youghal GAA is a club that puts its member’s health and safety as its first priority. The First Aid team will be backed up by a team of voluntary helpers; all who are Garda vetted and have basic first aid training.

Quality Coaching in a Friendly Environment: The club believes that for the camp to be enjoyable, the quality of the coaches must be of the highest standard. To this end, the club has put in place a team of fully qualified coaches headed up by inter county player and professional fitness instructor, Leigh Desmond. Leigh has insisted that all coaches be fully qualified, over 18 and a good mix of male and female coaches. Each coach will have a maximum of 15 kids, and will be supported by a team of girls and boys from the club’s U16 panel. As the “younger ones” need a little bit of extra help, tying laces, putting on helmets, toilet runs, opening lunches, etc., the club has put in place a team of parents to help them enjoy the camp to the full. All helpers in the camp will be Garda vetted.
Value for money: The club is acutely aware of the difficult times we live in. With this in mind, they have gone all out this year to make Cúl Camp the best value camp of 2011. They have increased the duration of the camp from 3 to 5 days. That’s almost twice the fun for the same cost. All kids will receive a full playing kit of socks, shorts and sports jersey, together with a kit bag that will make a great school bag for them next year. With 5 days of professional coaching, a medal and certificate, this camp is certainly a winner. And you never know, hopefully a few GAA superstars might make an appearance! The price of the camp is just €55, and if you have a second child, their price is reduced to €45. A further reduction of €10 is available for the third child, reducing the price to just €35. This is a club that certainly takes care of families.

Registration: Booking forms are coming out on the 9th April and must be received back by the club before the 15th May. However, interest to date has been very strong and it looks as if it may end up being booked up well before the closing date. Entry forms are available from the club office, all the underage managers and from the club website, www.youghal.cork.gaa.ie/home/cul-camp Any enquires, just phone camp coordinator Joe Kirk on 087 2306621. Book it quick as this one is too good to miss!

Catholic lay faith healer Eddie Stone delivered a powerful spiritual healing service to a packed congregation at the Church of the Holy Family in Youghal last Saturday (2nd April 2011). Believers came from far and wide to see and hear the service. The Galway-based minister led “an afternoon of Prayer and Service of Healing” at the Holy Family Church.
The afternoon included an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Rosary, a talk by Eddie, confessions and opportunity for individual prayer. Mass was also celebrated. Youghal priest Fr. Michael Murphy helped extend the invitation to Mr. Stones and believed the visit “will prove beneficial to the parish.”

Finding Old Ireland Alive in Place, Words, and Song – By Michael Shapiro
Michael Shapiro is the author of A Sense of Place and wrote the text for the pictorial book Guatemala: A Journey Through the Land of the Maya featuring photographs by Kraig Lieb. His travel writing has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, American Way and Islands magazines, and the travel sections of the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times. His story about rafting down the Grand Canyon in the wake of John Wesley Powell appears in The Best Travel Writing 2011. Photos by Michael Shapiro and Jacqueline Yau
“Trying to interview Dervla Murphy is like trying to open an oyster … with a wet bus ticket.”
That line came from the 2010 documentary, Who is Dervla Murphy, about the intrepid Irish travel writer. In 2003, I’d hoped to go to Ireland to interview the author of Full Tilt and Eight Feet in the Andes for my book A Sense of Place, a collection of conversations with the world’s leading travel writers. But each time I went overseas to conduct interviews for the book, Dervla was on the road.
Then something serendipitous happened. Last spring, the organizers of Immrama, a travel literature festival in Ireland, contacted me and asked if I could put them in touch with Jonathan Raban, who appears in A Sense of Place. I said sure and asked where the festival is.
“Lismore, in County Waterford,” said Mary Houlihan, the vivacious organizer of the festival. “Down in the south of Ireland,” she added graciously, in case I didn’t know.
Ireland Lismore street
“Lismore,” I rolled the name through my mind and then it clicked. “Isn’t that where Dervla Murphy lives?”
“Indeed it is,” Mary said.
Before she finished that short sentence I was mentally booking my airline ticket. CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY

The next day Jackie and I join Pico Iyer and his wife Hiroko for a float down the Blackwater. We board a battered wooden boat "for a journey that goes back 300 or 400 years," says our poetic captain, Tony O'Gallagher. His first mate, a little dog called Pharaoh, hunkers down on top of the unused lifevests. We float by majestic towers and tumbledown buildings as the sun and clouds play a game of hide-and-seek. "I love it -- it's a privilege to find something like this," Tony says, relishing his job."Better than f*****g acting."
Claycastle Pitch and Putt 25th Anniversary flag raising ceremony
It was a red letter day for Claycastle Pitch and Putt earlier this week when a flag was hoisted marking the 25th anniversary of the Club.
Founded in 1986 the club has grown over the years to become one of the most active clubs in Youghal, it currently has over 80 members. Originally based in the grounds of the Hilltop Hotel, the then town council granted land to the club in 1984 and the construction of the 18 hole course got underway. Two years later in 1986 the club was officially open, spearheaded by the late Noel O Driscoll; other founding members included Daisy Swayne and Tom McCarthy.

Mrs Noel O’Driscoll wife of the late Noel O’Criscoll founder member of club assisted by Mr. Mossie Swayne husband of the late Daisy Swayne founder raising the flag.
Raising the 25th anniversary flag this week were Mossie Swayne, the husband of Daisy, and Noel O Driscoll’s wife Margaret. Other members who have been a driving force in the club over the last quarter of a century are Michael Landers and the current Lady Captain Phil Mangan. Also present at the ceremony was the current president Thomas Bulman, club secretary Anthony O’Loughlin said “the club has been successful due in no small part to the efforts of many over 25 years and it has been a very active club in the community and has been very popular with the elderly in the town. It’s a great pastime for the elderly and while it’s a gentle sport there’s also a great competitive edge to it and it’s great to be going strong after 25 years” Events during the year to mark the 25th anniversary include the Mens’ Munster Matchplay Championship on May 28th and 29th.

Universal Social Charge Must Go
1-4-11
Cork East Sinn Fein Deputy Sandra McLellan has criticised the government for voting against her party’s motion which called for the scrapping of the Universal Social Charge, in favour of an alternative tax rate of 48% for those earning over €100,000.
Deputy McLellan said it was not good enough that the Labour Party and Fine Gael Deputies made no secret of their opposition to the universal social charge but now that they have their ministerial cars are refusing to get rid of it.
“I agreed with the analysis of the universal social charge by my Cork East constituency colleague, the Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, trade and Innovation, Deputy Sean Sherlock, who during the last Dail described the tax as “Woefully inadequate and inequitable” and a measure that “must be opposed”. I still share that analysis.
In defending his government’s position in retaining the USC, Minister of State Brian Hayes had the cheek to reference the Democratic Programme of the First Dail. That Programme made clear that the Government is bound to prioritise the Irish people, to make sure that first and foremost that our people’s needs are met.
“By refusing to abolish the USC Brian Hayes and his Government have fallen at the first hurdle- no one who truly believes in the principles of the Democratic Programme would stand over such an unfair and unjust tax”.
Deputy McLellan finished by saying, The Universal Social Charge has not changed since Labour opposed it before the election. Sinn Fein will continue to oppose it until it is abolished and calls on all those who oppose measures that reduce the pay of those already on low incomes to support our party’s efforts to have the USC
