This weekend Claycastle pitch and putt club will host the Gents Munster Matchplay Championships 2011. It is fitting that in our 25th year we have been chosen to host such a prestigious event. Months of planning have gone into the preparation for the championship and the course has seen some major transformations in recent months not least the three new bunkers and 20 new tee boxes. Improvements have also been made to the surrounds of the lake and the course is primed and looking in fantastic condition for the weekend ahead.

On the playing front this year gladly sees the return of Intermediate and Junior competitions. Eight players from across Munster will contest both grades. Local player Stephen Sheehan will carry the hopes of the host club in the Intermediate section and will be very hard to beat. John Cunningham for the Parteen club in Limerick also looks like a possible contender. The Junior section appears to be wide open with Colin O’ Sullivan form the Douglas club in Cork potentially being the player to beat.
The Senior section has thrown up some cracking games in what will be a fiercely fought competition. The all Cork affair between Kieran Dunscombe (St.Annes) and Kevin McCarthy (Rocklodge) provides us with a potential epic with the winner going on to face either Pacelli Darcy(Bruff) or Shane Hoare (Larkspur Park) . Ray Murphy’s recent form must make him one of the favourites and he plays Bruffs evergreen Liam O’ Donovan in the first round. Awaiting the winner of the Murphy O’ Donovan game will be the winner of the game between Anthony Culhane (Tipperary Hills) and Darren Goodall (Tralee). If all games go on  recent form a potential semi final of Corks intercounty stars Kieran Dunscombe and Ray Murphy is on the cards. In the bottom half of the draw course specialist and Irelands number one ranked player John Walsh (Collins) takes on an in form Frank Dineen ( St.Annes) This will be a titanic battle between two of the games top players. Claycastle’s sole representative Paudie O’ Sullivan takes on Eoin Walsh (Collins) in the next game in what will be another cracking game between two in-form players. Next up is another game that is simply too close to call between double national champion and Matchplay specialist Darren Collins (St.Annes) and Tipperary’s finest Paul O’ Brien (Lakeside). Recent performance indicate that O’ Brien has returned to top form and could be a serious challenger for the weekend. The last game in the seniors sees Jamie Blake (Tralee) take on Kenneth Kerin (Clare Road).  Matchplay usually throws up plenty of shocks and upsets and add in to that the Claycastle factor then each player in the field must believe they have a chance to claim the top prize.
The action starts at 10.00 am this Saturday with the second round at 1.30pm. Sundays play begins at 10.00am with the senior semi finals. The finals will kick off at 1.30pm Sunday. All are welcome to come out and view what will undoubtedly be a superb weekend of pitch and putt at one of Irelands top courses.

On Friday the 27th of May at 10am Community Radio Youghal will embark on a Marathon of sorts as they attempt to broadcast 50 hours of continuous live Radio. The Radiothon kicks off on friday morning from 138 North Main Street Youghal and the CRY team will be broadcasting from the vacant premises and CRY studios for the duration of the 50 hours .

The feat is a joint fundraiser in aid of  The Youghal Cancer Support Group and CRY104fm and all proceeds will be split evenly between the two organisations.

THE YOUGHAL CANCER SUPPORT GROUP- is dedicated to opening a drop in centre in Youghal, to offer help and support to all those who are dealing with, or have suffered the trauma of cancer. The Centre will also offer help and support to their friends and family. The group wants to offer this service to everyone in East Cork and West Waterford, providing a range of therapies  and advice. It will cover Clashmore, Ardmore, Dungarvan,Tallow, Cappoquin, Lismore, Youghal, Killeagh, Castlemartyr, Midleton, and all townlands in between. In fact it will be open to people from all over that want to avail of the Centre.

Community Radio Youghal (CRY 104fm) meanwhile are planning to relocate from their existing premises in Cumann na Daoine to Nagle House, South Abbey in order to better serve the community. The new premises will provide better training facilities for Volunteers and Community groups. These facilities will allow greater access to Studio equipment and technical training for volunteers and for those who wish to gain experience in broadcasting and the media.

C.R.Y 104fm Station Manger, Declan Gibbons is looking forward to the station hosting the Radiothon. “We hosted an all-night Radiothon last December, to help raise much-needed funds for local boy, Keith Phelan and that was very well supported by station volunteers and by the local community.

This event really will be a marathon though – 50 hours of live radio, all provided by volunteers!

“We’re delighted to partner with the Youghal Cancer Support Group. They are seeking to provide a vital service in Youghal for people from all over our listenership area, so it makes perfect sense to support them. Volunteers from both organisations will be involved throughout the 50 hours and we hope that people will respond generously and get into the spirit of the Radiothon”, he said.

CRY continues to work closely with the students in Pobail Scoil Na Trionoide and it is fitting that Pobail Scoil students will launch this epic Radio Marathon on the friday morning.

There will be on street collections during Friday and Saturday and Collection boxes will also be placed in shops throughout Youghal town beforehand so if you want to play a request for yourself or your friends and family throw a Euro in the box and fill out the request form and all proceeds will go to these two worthy causes.

Pictured are some of the the CRY team who will take part in the Radiothon: Claire Regan, Yvonne Smith, Admin; Evelyn McGrath, Cumann Na Daoine; Noel Cronin and station manager Declan Gibbons. Kneeling: Colin Durkin and John Butt

And don’t forget all your favourite CRY presenters will be keeping you entertained throughout Friday and Saturday night the 27th and 28th of May.

Youghal Conference Safeguarding Elder’s from Abuse and Hardship at the Cumman Na Daoine Hall 11th May. The conference was held as a result of a growing awareness of the plight of many older people in our society, who endure great hardship due to various reasons, indeed many people are in despair, and sometimes people are suffering deliberate abuse. Community Alert volunteers and indeed all local organisations are confronted by situations from time to time that confound them as to how to find a solution.

Initiatives such as encouraging retired men to attend GAA matches’, and recording of local history projects have done very well in places, but the opportunity provided by this conference to network with other’s who face the same conundrums was invaluable. Attending were representative’s from throughout East Cork
It is hoped to provide a similar opportunity later in the autumn, to interested, concerned individuals and voluntary organisations who wish to discuss Safeguarding and Elder Abuse and to meet up with other concerned volunteers, and develop their network of contacts that may be able to assist with some situation over the next few years

The term ‘safeguarding’ means a range of activities aimed at upholding an individual’s fundamental right to be safe.
For 25 years Community Alert has played an important role in the safeguarding of the elderly, and it is highly regarded as the premier organisation concerned with Community Safety and Security in Ireland.

Since its beginnings in Churchtown South near Cloyne in east Cork, the safety of Older People has been paramount for Community Alert groups
throughout Ireland, and the present initiative organizing these conferences
in partnership with the HSE and Gardai is a natural progression.

All communities have individual problems and problem cases, and all organisations have to make difficult decisions about how they deal with
these problems. This conference in the Cumman Na Daoine Hall allowed HSE Social Workers to provide an insight into the problems encountered by the officers of the HSE who are tasked with safeguarding the Elderly from Abuse and exploitation.

Topics that were discussed include;

•What is elder abuse?
•Different types of abuse
•Financial abuse
•Neglect
•Physical abuse
•Sexual abuse
•Psychological/emotional abuse
•Discriminatory abuse

•Who might abuse an older person?
•Why might someone abuse?

•How the HSE can and cannot help .
•Guidance and legislation
•Mental capacity,
•What can someone who is experiencing abuse do to stop it?
•Making the first step
•Different types of support
•If you witness or suspect abuse
•Reporting abuse
•The need for Garda Vetting.

Additional topics that were discussed
A number of issues were highlighted by the National Helpline which has been operated by Community Alert throughout the emergencies which occurred during
the extreme weather conditions over the past two years. The Helpline assisted individuals with their many difficult problems caused by the severe freeze up. The Helpline staff realised that there was a surprising lack of “know how” about claiming Fuel Allowance’s and the Household Benefits package, and on
the assistance available for energy saving measures e.g. warmer homes attic insulation etc.
Therefore a warm welcome was extended to Mr   Morris O’Brien, representing the Warmer Homes schemes. Morris works with Northside Community Enterprise, insulation experts.
He spoke about the lack of insulation in so many homes, and the cost of maintaining a minimum level of warmth.
Fuel poverty has a major impact on the lives of the people affected – in terms of financial issues, comfort, health and the quality of the home.
In general, low income householders are unable to afford the capital investment measures that would improve the energy quality of their homes.
Income supports and fuel allowances do not address this structural deficiency in this part of the housing stock.
Fuel poverty is a phenomenon experienced in private and social housing alike, both urban and rural.
The SEAI’s Housing Programme was set up to help establish and implement a national plan of action to systematically address the problem of fuel
poverty. Morris through his presentation showed that for every euro invested in
tackling heat loss due to poor insulation, savings are returned in less health expenditure from all households, as well as lower expenditure on imported Energy bills.
Low house temperatures during winter months can also lead to respiratory and Circulation problems.

The Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship 1st Round

Youghal    1-11
Glanworth    1-10

Youghal deservedly progressed through to the next round of the Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship by the narrowest of margins on Saturday night – 14th May 2011- with a one point victory over Glanworth in a game with a touch of controversy late on.

Youghal's Intermediate Footballers 2011

Youghal's Intermediate Footballers 2011

There is no doubt, but Youghal deserved to win this one and got off to a tremendous start with three points scored after only two minutes of play and could have had a goal as well only for a top drawer save by the Glanworth keeper Thomas Fitzgibbon.
The first white flag was raised after just 41 seconds when Youghal wing forward Nigel Roche sent the ball over from a tight angle.
Immediately Youghal who were playing into the stiff breeze in the first half scored again straight from the kick out, this time the very impressive Conor O’Sullivan pointed to double the margin.
Again Youghal swarmed the Glanworth kick out and a ball to the left corner was met by Paul Moylan who slotted over the ball and Youghal couldn’t have asked for a better start.
Glanworth then had two scores from play from Michael Pierce, but back came Youghal again and Conor O’Sullivan was yet again on target with a superb point from play to re-establish the two point lead.
Glanworth’s best player by a mile, full forward Pierre O’Driscoll scored from a free, but in reply Paul Moylan sent a point over with a free after ten minutes of play.
O’Driscoll was on target again seconds later for Glanworth, but the excellent Ken Dempsey was on target himself minutes later for Youghal who were managing at this stage to keep the two point lead intact.

The next four minutes saw Glanworth score three unanswered points, a free and a point from O’Driscoll and on the 21st minute Michael Sheehan gave Glanworth the lead for the one and only time.
Youghal responded well and the defence was superb, dispelling wave after wave of attacks, forcing six wides out of the Glanworth forwards and when Youghal were awarded a free on the Glanworth ‘45’ few would have given Conor O’Sullivan a chance of getting the ball over, but a super strike saw the ball fly over and a white flag raised as the game was level and remained that way at the short whistle.
Youghal came out fired up and within seconds Paul Moylan had Youghal back in front with a well taken free. O’Driscoll levelled with a pointed free of his own some ten minutes later as neither side could capitalise on some scoreable chances.
Conor O’Sullivan slotted two free’s for Youghal on the 45th and 47th minutes respectively and it took another O’Driscoll free to narrow the margin to one point with nine minutes remaining.
Youghal got a free on the Glanworth ‘21’ seconds later for an off the ball incident, spotted by the Banteer referee Conor Lane and rather than just settle for the point, Youghal took a quick free into full forward David O’Mahony. O’Mahony turned brilliantly and drilled the ball into the goal to the delight of the large travelling support from Youghal, but it wasn’t quite over yet.

Paul Moylan then pointed a beautiful and crucial score for Youghal with seven minutes remaining, but then two moments of extremely poor refereeing, which could have had spelled disaster for Youghal.
Incident one concerned David Pyne of Glanworth falling untouched to the ground and a free was awarded and was duly slotted over by O’Driscoll.
Then a goal was awarded for Glanworth when it was clear to everyone in Castlelyons that the player who in the square scooped the ball off the ground into the net.
The referee consulted with his umpires for a minute, but despite the appeals of the Youghal players the green flag was waved and the goal stood.
With two minutes to go O’Driscoll made it a one point game with a pointed free, but despite late pressure Youghal held out for the win and Peter Queally’s men go marching into the next round.
Youghal’s Premier Intermediate Hurlers are in action in two weeks time ar Riverstown the home of Sarsfields where they take on Ballincollig, where Peter Queally is again the man in charge and this win in the Intermediate Football Championship will give the Youghal lads a much needed break from football and time to concentrate on Hurling.
