What forms can Elder Abuse take?
There are several forms of abuse, any or all of which may be carried out as the result of deliberate intent, negligence or ignorance.
Physical abuse, including hitting, slapping, pushing, kicking, misuse of medication, restraint or inappropriate sanctions.

Psychological abuse, including emotional abuse, threats of harm or abandonment, deprivation of contact, humiliation, blaming, controlling, intimidation, coercion, harassment, verbal abuse, isolation or withdrawal from services or supportive networks.
Financial or material abuse, including theft, fraud, exploitation, pressure in connection with wills, property, inheritance or financial transactions, or the misuse or misappropriation of property, possessions or benefits.
Neglect and acts of omission, including ignoring medical or physical care needs, failure to provide access to appropriate health, social care or educational services, the withholding of the necessities of life such as medication, adequate nutrition and heating.

Someone else has access to your accounts without your full permission
You feel pressured to allow someone else access to your accounts
Someone else makes decisions about your money without speaking with you first
You feel you have lost all control over your money

Green Barn Bistro has been given a major facelift in 2011 and they have also been joined recently by Irish Aggregates who have opened up a new Paving Display Area to compliment the already well accomplished 4 **** Garden Centre at Green Barn. Speaker Michael Browne encouraged all present “to use and promote each others business this summer by encouraging guests/visitors/tours etc to visit other business/attractions in the East Cork area”. The evening also featured an exhibition by Ardmore artist Brenda Harris, the exhibition is open 9am – 7pm daily and runs until the end of June.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day (‘a day to Remember’?) is an opportunity for people to come together and raise funds by hosting a tea party in their home, office or school. Their guests are invited to come along for a cup of tea and a biscuit and are then asked to make a small contribution to The Alzheimer Society of Ireland. Participation is easy and funds raised are allocated to the closest service/branch of The Society. All money raised locally, stays locally.
Every year on Alzheimer’s Tea Day, thousands of good people all over Ireland come together to share a cup of tea, remember the lives of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and raise much needed funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
Tea Day is critical to people who care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s – because it funds real, tangible, hands-on services that make an enormous difference to their everyday lives.
This year, Alzheimer’s Tea Day is on Thursday 5th of May 2011. For more information call the Fundraising Department on 01 2073800, email teaday@alzheimer.ie or submit your registration form online at www.teaday.ie.

Klueners v Taylor tonight FRIDAY MAY 6th at the Walter Raleigh Hotel
As revealed on SportsNewsIreland, efforts were being made to find another opponent for World Champion Katie Taylor to fight in front of Irish fans before she heads off to defend her European titles, and such an opponent has now been found in Maike Klueners from Neuss, in Germany, like Taylor 24, but with a completely different background in the sport. Maike , trained by Pasquale Ferrano at the Dusseldorf BoxRing club is a former Muay Thai German and European champion, and a bronze medallist at the 2006 World Muay Thai tournament.

Maike Klueners pictured with German home trainer Pasqúale Ferraro, German national trainer David Hoppstock, Pat Flynn, St John’s Boxing Club, Fermoy and Michael Davitt, manager of the Walter Raleigh Hotel,Youghal. - Pic: www.youghalonline.com
She is better known in the boxing ring for her performances in the 57kg class rather than at 60 kg. Like so many fighters striving for success in London 2012, Maike now finds it necessary to move to the 60 kg category. She is currently ranked no 10 in Boxing’s latest world rankings at 57kg. She has in fact fought at 57kg in the 2010 World boxing championships in Barbados where she got a bronze, losing only to Tunisia’s Rim Jouini in the semi-final.

She is though improving all the time, even if her record is nothing sensational with some 12 defeats in 33 fights since moving to boxing. Her clash with Taylor is scheduled for May 6th at the Walter Raleigh Hotel in Youghal, Co. Cork in a tournament organised by the St John’s Boxing Club in Fermoy. Taylor has always been very popular in Cork – indeed she performed the opening ceremony for new St John’s Boxing Club in its home town in October 2009 when one of the club’s founders, Pa Flynn described Katie Taylor as ‘ one of the greatest sportswomen this country ever produced’.
“I was the Irish team manager in 2005 when Katie won her first gold medal at the European Amateur Championships in Norway. She was only 17 at the time,” Mr Flynn said.
“It will take a very good girl to beat Katie for a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics,” he added.

Certainly it is great for boxing in Ireland that fans around the country can see Taylor in action, outside of the National Stadium. There is a huge new interest in womens boxing in Ireland due in no small measure to the successes of Taylor in recent years and to the great work of the IABA Women’s Development Manager, Anja Norman.
In recent months Taylor has also fought in New Ross (Co Wexford) and in Dungarvan (Co.Waterford), on both occasions defeating World No 2, China’s Cheng Dong convincingly.
In 2011, the Bray fighter , is due to defend her European Union title in Katowice, Poland in late May and her European Championship crown in Rotterdam in late October so the Youghal event well be one of the last opportunities that Irish fans have to see her in action before she leaves for foreign lands.
Fans travelling a long distance and worried about getting out of Youghal late on a Friday night need have no fears. Walter Raleigh Hotel’s General Manager, Michael Davitt tells me that Single rooms are available for the night at 59 Euros B+B or a Twin/Double at 79 Euros inc B+B.
Further news of the tournament will appear on the hotel’s website www.walterraleighhotel.com and on its Facebook pages whilst hotel booking can be made of course through the website or by phoning Telephone: 024-92011 or Fax: 024-93560.
Historic Youghal, Europe’s 2nd oldest Port, has lots to enjoy for visitors to the area inc lovely sandy beaches nearby so what a great weekend in store for those who want to combine seeing our World Champion in action on Friday 6th May with the delights of East Cork .
Finally, a reminder that Katie Taylor is in action in Bray on Good Friday 22nd April, when she takes on the Spanish titleholder, Jennifer Miranda Maqueda at the Royal Hotel & Merrill Leisure Centre in her home town of Bray – an occasion when Ms Miranda will be seeking revenge for her loss to Taylor in their last 16 bout at the European Union Championships in Keszthely, Hungary, last August. Having enjoyed so much media coverage in recent weeks from her Lucozade ads, I’m sure Katie will be too much energetic for her European opponents in the coming weeks.

The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation provides direct funding to families of children with brain damage who suffer severe intellectual and physical developmental delay, and funding is always needed.
For most of us, the words Jack and Jill bring to mind the old nursery rhyme ‘Jack and Jill went up the hill’ but 19 year old Danielle Keniry of Youghal brings this to another level, as she intends going much higher than a hill to undertake a tandem Skydive in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. Daughter of Annmarie and Martin Keniry, Danielle is also a 6th year student in Pobalscoil na Tríonóide.
Asked why Danielle decided on such a dare devil fundraising event, she smiled as she told The East Cork Journal that she ‘loves the adrenalin rush, and wanted to do something that she would always remember’ for a deserving charity. Danielle chose the Jack and Jill Foundation because she worked with a family during last summer whose child suffered severe brain damage. The praise, thanks and admiration which that family showed for the wonderful help they received from the Jack and Jill Foundation impressed Danielle tremendously and she wanted to help in any way she could.
Not one to let the grass grow under her feet, Danielle sourced various activities and eventually decided on the Tandem Skydive. The nearest centre to Youghal is in Kilkenny, and she immediately made contact with them and set the entire fundraiser in motion.
Somebody once said that ‘only Skydivers know why the birds sing’. Last Saturday morning (April 30th 2011) Danielle Keniry traveled with her parents to Kilkenny where, at 9.30am, she made that leap of faith, where she surely hear the birds sing for Jack and Jill.
