THE YOUGHAL RNLI LIFEBOAT was launched on Tuesday 9th Aug at 11.32am to a report of an 8 meter local fishing vessel that had broken down 4 miles south east of Youghal Lighthouse. It was a calm sunny day and the Youghal Lifeboat under the helm of John Griffin Jnr, crew members Ellen Danagher and Liam Keogh arrived on scene, established a tow and brought the fishing vessel with two persons on board back to the Youghal quayside.

Youghal (English pronunciation: /?j??l/; Irish: Eochaill, meaning “yew woods”) is a town in County Cork, Ireland. Sitting on the estuary of the River Blackwater, in the past it was militarily and economically important. Being built on the edge of a steep riverbank, the town has a distinctive long and narrow layout. At the 2002 census the population was 6,597, but the population of its catchment area is about 10,000.
Lying on the coastline of East Cork, the bustling and picturesque town of Youghal is deemed one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland. The historic walled seaport town of Youghal has many historic buildings and monuments within its ancient town walls, and has been designated as an Irish Heritage Port by the Irish Tourist Board. Formerly a strong manufacturing town, Youghal continues to experience sustained economic decline and employment in the town itself has seen a marked decrease in 2008. Many of the town’s population commute to work in the Cork or Waterford region.
Name
The name Youghal (pronounced yawl) comes from the Irish Eochaill meaning “yew woods”, which were once plentiful in the area. Older anglicisations of this name include Youghall, Yoghel and Yochil.
Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition 2011
3rd Annual Family Heritage Festival – Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition 2011
City Hall, Cork City, Ireland – Friday, September 30th 2011.
by Chairperson Richard T. Cooke
On Tuesday, October 22nd 2009, Cork City Hall buzzed with excitement as it played host to over forty historical societies and groups from all over the City and County who came together for the first time ever in a unique exhibition that celebrated Cork’s rich, colourful Heritage, Tradition and Culture.
This fascinating educational family exhibition showcased the exciting work carried out by these enthusiastic voluntary heritage groups in their communities.
At the day-long exhibition, the atmosphere was electric as a cross section of the finest historians and ‘caretakers’ of Cork’s rich past sang its praises, passionately speaking of its region’s history and memories as only they know how in an entertaining series of interactive talks and friendly chit chat.
“Celebration and Participation” was the theme of this enlightening exhibition which struck a chord with the continuous stream of people who flocked to the City Hall eager to learn more about their rich local history and was of particular interest to schools and budding young historians.
We all live in areas where the past is all around. This history makes us who we are. Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition is about bringing historical groups together so that they meet each other, chat and share ideas in order that historical societies can plan for the future. The aim is also to present their rich histories to the Cork public.
Due to the tremendous positive success of the inaugural Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition, it has become an annual event wholeheartedly supported by Cork City Council and admission is free.
A Heritage Festival that’s on the pulse of the past with a view to the future, the warm friendly welcome you’ll enjoy at the Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition is sure to put a smile on your face, making it a must see for all the family and for all those who want to learn more about Cork’s rich, colourful Heritage, Tradition and Culture in an fun, homely atmosphere.
You’ll be glad you visited Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition.

Tuesday August 9th saw the climax of the Perks Entertainment Centre Talent Show, and it did not disappoint. Three previous heats saw contestants come from various parts of Cork, including holiday-makers and locals alike, to compete for a place in the Grand Final. Eleven contestants took to the stage to try and win the judges vote and walk away with the opportunity of a lifetime : a recording session with the Youghal based Claycastle Recording Studios who kindly sponsored the prizes for this event.
The house was packed to the rafters and the exuberant crowd supported every act that took to the stage which contributed to the electrifying atmosphere at Perks Entertainment Centre. The high standard of talent on the night exceeded the judges expectations, with head Judge Keith Watkins commending the commitment of the performers and their parents dedication to their chosen talent . There was a variety of performances on the night including pop singing, hip hop dancing, a magic show, Irish dancing, classical dance acts and instrumental acts, with each act as passionate as the next.
Unfortunately there could only be one winner from each category : Age 6-11yrs : Robert O Regan (singing). Age 12-16yrs : Daniel Ryan (accordion player). But nobody went awy empty handed. Both contestants were popular winners with the audience and even gave an encore of their performances. All that is left for them to do is get in to the recording studio. You never know, maybe we have one of the next big names in music right on our doorstep.
