SUPPORT for the team ahead of the Cork County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Final has been incredible from all areas of the community and the Club deeply appreciates it.
There has also been fantastic support financially from Kevin Curtin, Mackeys Central Star and Brookes Super Valu towards the kit sponsorship for the team and last Saturday the club wanted to show their appreciation to these three sponsors by way of a presentation of a new Youghal Kit Bag and County Final commemorative jersey. Club Chairman Dave Kilgannon said “The buzz about the town in the last week has been fantastic, with an eight day turn around it focused everyones mind immediately on the final and it has been a very busy and exciting time at Youghal GAA Club. Finals are exciting and wonderful for everyone in the town and the surrounding areas, but they are expensive too and with that in mind I want to thank from the bottom of my heart, the businesses and supporters for their backing. I would like to single out Kevin Curtin, Noel and Kay Mackey and Ken Brookes his son Peter and the Brookes family for their support in sponsoring our teams kit for the final and the kit bags, it is a very generous gesture and we are very grateful”.

YOUGHAL is awash with Maroon and Yellow ahead of this Sunday’s Cork County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Final. The build up has had to be pretty quick with just an eight day window between last Saturday evenings semi final replay victory over Newcestown at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Youghal post office staff Denise Kiely, Angela McGrath and Catherine Keenaghan getting into the county hurling fever for next Sunday's Evening Echo Cork Premier Intermediate Hurling County Final between Youghal v Courcey Rovers in Pairc Ui Rinn.
But the whirlwind effect of Youghal’s appearance in the final and the possibility of winning the championship for the first time since 1993 and the possibility of Senior Hurling returning to the town has stoked the fires of excitement, hope and above all the belief that it is our time to shine again.
With all these hopes brings all types of pressure on the nerves, but they are good nerves and when Peter Queally’s men take to the field at Pairc Ui Rinn this Sunday the 9th of October at 3.45pm, history is on the line and the town will cheer on the Youghal Boys with all their heart.
Businesses and shops and the general Community have been getting behind the Youghal team in their own way. An Post, AIB, Cree’s, Sport and Leisure, the Charity Shop, Sean Twomey’s Butchers, Fergal Cullinanes and Absolute Flowers are an example of the effort people are making to show their support.

The Youghal Club are not finished there, they still want people to show their colours and fly the flag for Youghal. More bunting will stream the Main Street of the town and watch out for strategic flag placements like Tyntes Castle, The Clock Gate and The Town Hall. Keep it going Lads “Up the Youghal Boys’

National breastfeeding week got off to a great start in Cork, with the Quintessence Breastfeeding challenge held in Mahon point last Saturday, 1st October .
Maria Casey , Mum of two and author of ‘Mammy Diaries’, organised the quintessence breastfeeding challenge in Ireland last year . This year Friends of Breastfeeding and Maria Casey merged forces and organised a great event, with ?8 venues around Ireland- Galway, Mayo, Limerick, Cork, Dublin, Offaly, Cuidiu in Kilkenny and BWI ( Baby wearing Ireland ) in Dublin. . After the final count Cork had 145 babies/toddlers all breastfeeding at the same time, it was fantastic to look around and see so many breastfeeding mums in the one place . The mammies, babies and toddlers of Cork are currently rating second place in the Quintessence Breastfeeding challenge , with Citywest Shopping Centre, Dublin 24 in lead by one child. This is an amazing achievement for Ireland as groups all over the world took part in the breastfeeding challenge .
Ireland in the past hasn’t had a good breastfeeding rate, but looking around I think we must be rising on the ratings at last. There was a buzzing atmosphere at the event all morning and through out the day. With all the stands offering help, advice and information. There was everything from babywearing to breastfeeding and music classes to baby massage .Friends of breastfeeding also gave out goody bags to everyone who took part. The Babywearing Ireland stand was busy from start to finish with lots of mums and dads trying on their huge range of slings from wraps to mai tais .
There are events on Nationwide for National Breastfeeding week , but Cork seems to be particularly busy with something on nearly every day. This Saturday at 2pm-5pm in the SMA hall in Wilton, La Leche League are holding an afternoon event. They have some speakers, retail and information stalls and there is also good bags for the first 100 to attend. Tickets are only €5 and looking at the line up, everyone will get great value for their €5.
Angie Benhaffaf, mum of four, is one of the guest speakers and will be talking about her experiences of breastfeeding, her book “The Little Fighters” . Her book will be on sale at the event and Angie will also be signing a small amount of books on the day. There is also going to be a raffle on the day and the proceeds will go to “The Little Fighters Fund”.

THE PRESENTATION took place at the Cumann na Daoine premises in Catherine St. on Wednesday 5th October 2011. This year’s art exhibition was dedicated to the memory of the late Gretta Kelleher who was one of the founding members of the group and who sadly passed away last year. The members generously make a donation to local charities in lieu of cheese and wine at the opening night and this year’s charity is the local R.N.L.I. as Gretta was a volunteer and fundraiser for that institution.

Noel O’ Driscoll Memorial 2011
2 weeks ago saw the Noel O’ Driscoll Memorial prize for 2011 come to an end. Over the four days of play there was some great shooting out on the course where conditions were tough and the weather wasn’t on side for the majority of the tournament. We thank all who supported this prestigious competition and especially to those who have the course in such top condition day in day out. The overall winner of the prize was David Kenefick who produced some fine play and was a very worthy winner of the perpetual trophy. Although the weather wasn’t kind to us, over 100 cards were played in total.

Chairperson’s Prize 2011
The Chairperson’s prize sponsored by our chairman Martin Keohane was played for last weekend, Over the four days, weather conditions were again tough with rain around during most of the sessions. Although weather was poor, we were delighted with the turnout where 150 cards were played. We thank all who supported the competition. This was the last major of the year and scoring was close but it was James Howes who finished off his great season by adding the Chairperson’s Prize to the other wins this year.
Special mention to Paudie O’ Sullivan who had two ‘holes in one’ on Sunday afternoon in a row in the same round on hole 12 and 13 respectively. It is very rare to see this happen in the game and its a great achievement.

YOUGHAL FISHERMAN KEVIN MURPHY got a monster surprise when he found a giant lobster amongst his catch while ray fishing two miles north of Capel Island. “He weighed 11 lbs and was over 30 inches long,” says Kevin. The average lobster measures about a foot and weighs approximately 2 lbs.
Ageing a lobster is a delicate and indefinite science but experts gauge that the creatures’ size increases by about 15% each time they moult. A young lobster (5-7 years) moults about 25 times a year and adult once or twice per annum. Older lobsters moult only every 3-4 years. By this criterion, Kevin estimates his catch is “probably about 80 years old” –or about 33 years older than the fisherman himself!
It was the third time in 15 months that the father of three has netted an unusual lobster aboard his boat Sea Lion. In June 2010 he landed a massive 20 year-old, white female weighing 10 lb. Last March he brought ashore a 10½ lb crustacean again stretching almost 30 inches. All belong to the European lobster class –scientifically called homarus gammarus.
As previously, Kevin intended to return his rare recruit to the sea after finalising photographic proof. However, Aherne’s seafood restaurant asked to display the creature –whom they christened Jimmy- for a day to in their foyer. It was then decided to offer Jimmy a new lifestyle free from the risk of fishing nets. Dingle aquarium declined to offer permanent accommodation but Lahinch Seaworld was “absolutely delighted” to be offer lodgings to the lobster and Jimmy was transported to his new accommodation last Saturday.
The Guinness Book of Records says the largest lobster ever caught was found in Nova Scotia in 1934, measuring 3.51 feet and weighed 44.4 lbs. With the help of Clare hospitality, who is to say young Jimmy won’t yet get this pincers on the title?
First Cut! Film Festival – “A crazy hive of activity and creativity!”
Fantastic First Cut! Film Festival is over for another year, a great weekend of shorts, features, workshops and Q&A with the professionals. This was the first year of our travelling festival.
This youth “ pop up” Film Festival, with support from The Arts Council, Cork County Council, SECAD and local businesses, gives young filmmakers a chance to screen their short films to a young, and not so young!, audience.
With Cinemobile on board we travel out to the communities where young people are busy making movies and bring the movie theatre, the equipment and the Professionals to give workshops, meet with and discuss the art of filmmaking with young people. And finally screen in great comfort great feature length films along with short films, made by new young filmmakers, for everyone to enjoy and… All this on your doorstop!
So this past weekend in Glanmire in Co Cork what were the highlights…. a great Opening on Saturday. Mick Hannigan , Director of the oldest and largest Irish film festival took time out in the busy lead up to their 56th festival due to take place Nov 6-13.
The 100 seater Cinemobile was filled with young filmmakers, actors& their supporters, Chris Hurley from Cork Film Centre and Ian Mc Donagh, Cork County Arts Officer and lots of local supporters. All listened eagerly to some encouraging words from the Corona Festival Director who applauded the creativity and hard work involved in making a film. He encouraged their involvement in this growing industry and in the magic of films and spoke about the recently set up Cork Screen Commission whose job it is to market the Cork region as a prime location for film and TV production.
Jason O Mahony the newly appointed Commissioner had expressed his sincere regrets at not being able to attend this festival.
First Cut! Film Project was set up in 2006 to provide training and support to groups of young people who are interested in making film. Since they have , with Cork Film Centre professionals, been giving a variety of filmmaking workshops in the Cork harbour area. So of course there were some great workshops on the Festival programme. These were really well attended.
First up was Jane Lees Stop Motion Animation on Saturday. 90 minutes long with a finished film for YouTube viewing. “ It was a crazy hive of activity and creativity with 4 teams coming up with 4 short animations in just over an hour..using plasticene, drawings, people and a whiteboard!” Jane , award winning animation artist said. All 4 will be posted on you tube
A real treat on Saturday was the screening of My Brothers , followed by Q&A with Will Collins, Screenwriter, Niall Owens, Production and Timmy Creed, lead actor . This award winning film made in East Cork at the end of 2009 and premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 got a great response from the audience at the Festival. We were given a riveting insight into the film, the story, the filming and the experience of premiering at Tribeca, a big international festival. Will Collins proved himself to be a masterful storyteller with a great sense of humour, inspired young people to follow their dreams.
On Sunday morning the Festival kicked off day two with Pascal Scott, a highly regarded actor on both the Irish and International film and theatre scene and the local award winning filmmaker Patrick O Shea whose most recent film Tree Keeper we look forward to seeing. The Acting for Screen workshop was packed with budding young enthusiastic actors. The participants learnt about relating to the camera, using your body, voice and eyes, got advice about working with a crew and director. This activity based workshop from two experienced professionals was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The real highlights were the films made by young people, the screenings were packed. These brand new shorts were shocking, intriguing, beautiful, really funny, sad, frightening clever and entertaining. All were thought provoking, memorable and some showed extraordinary promise. Everyone there wanted to see more …so keep those cameras rolling .. let’s get planning … First Cut! Festival 2012 here we come..
