Silent Screening of Phantom of the Opera in St Mary’s Collegiate
Denise FitzGerald reports

THE DARK, perhaps eerie surroundings of St Mary’s Collegiate Church was the setting for the 1929 showing of the original silent, black and white film, Phantom of the Opera. With its remarkable ecoustics and many imposing features, and the ancient archway in the Church which was the impressive site for the location of the screen, one could be forgiven for remembering the words of the Phantom when (hearing Carlotta singing for the first time) said “My God..this place really is haunted!”

The screening of the silent film Phantom of the Opera at St. Mary's Collegiate Church, Youghal

When renowned Irish composer and organist, Eric Sweeney, took his place to perform a live organ improvisation to the film, he received a resounding welcome and applause from the large audience who came along to experience this rare event.

And they were not disappointed. The film itself, the atmosphere, the surroundings and the inspiring music of Eric Sweeney, brought together an event which was not only unique, but moving and haunting. Not a muscle moved, not an eye strayed from the screen and not a note of the music was missed.

This exclusive event was an enchanting evening of memories, music and magic which will long be remembered by those lucky enough to be there.

Social Car
We are Social Car, a group of first year social care students who have come together to bring a solution to the car parking problem that we currently have in Cork Institute of Technology. Linking in with Kevin McCarthy (Buildings and Estates), we came up with the solution of setting up a rewards- based, car-pooling system. Students who have signed up on the 22nd of November as part of PRE-OCCUPY CIT will avail of guaranteed free parking on the 24th of November.

Our aim is to fill the Astroturf car park (two hundred car spaces) and to have enough support to highlight this solution to the President of CIT, Dr Brendan Murphy. We hope that with enough support a web-based system will be implemented in conjunction with student ID cards in CIT. This will reduce the amount of cars in the car parks and help save our environment.

An Irish production of ‘Moby Dick’ has brought Youghal and a town in America into a sister-city programme. New Bedford, Massachusetts will be twinned with the East Cork town after a visit by the Gare St Lazare Players, who are currently touring the US.

Olly Casey

At a reception in New Bedford, Mayor Scott Lang of New Bedford invited Youghal to become a sister city with his own. During a week of Moby Dick related events inspired by the Cork theatre company’s visit, former Lord Mayor of Youghal, Oliver Casey was the guest of honour as the two fishing-port communities shared their Moby Dick heritage.

Youghal served as the location for the Massachusetts whaling capital during John Huston’s 1954 filming of ‘Moby Dick’. Gare St Lazare chose to mark the link by premiering their stage production there in 2009.

Now, during a 10 city tour of the USA they have hailed their visit to New Bedford as a highlight. “The twinning of the two towns is a perfect legacy not only of our production but also of Imagine Ireland,” said actor Conor Lovett who performs in the show. “Imagine Ireland is a seed which will ultimately be judged by the fruit it bears.”

Gare St Lazare Players already premiered their newest work this year at the Kilkenny Arts Festival, written especially for the company by New York playwright Will Eno. The play, ‘Title and Deed’, will receive its US premiere at The Signature Theater on 42nd Street in May 2012.

“We are thrilled that a major American playwright has written a new work for an Irish company,” said director Judy Hegarty Lovett. “This and the New Bedford/Youghal connection are a great start to the legacy of Imagine Ireland.”

‘Moby Dick’ continues to tour this week in Boston and next week in New London, Connecticut and then on to Burlington and St Johnsbury, Vermont with Gare St Lazare having performed at more US venues in 2011 than any other Irish theatre company.

Great Prizes to be Won!
All welcome!

Well another year is over and its time to sit back and reflect on what the past year held in store. St Itas are probably one of the smallest clubs in the East Cork area and this year we fielded one hurling team at Junior level and despite the number of players lost to emigration and those away at work or in collage we managed to acquit ourselves quite well. At this point I think it only fair that we acknowledge all the help and support we got throughout the year from the East Cork Board and different clubs who helped us when the occasion’s arose in changing match fixtures, venues etc, we were not the only club facing the problems of player numbers being short and this year and sadly nearly every club was affected by emigration and or players having to stop playing because of work or school. St Itas would like to thank all the players, our coach, our selectors and club members, our sponsors and hard working committee but most of all St Itas wish to thank everyone who supported our club throughout the year at our matches, fundraisers and different club events.

2011 League
In a year that saw us step up to a new level of hurling in Division 2 of the Junior A league it was also a year that saw us bow out of the championship against Castlemartyr in Youghal at the quarter final stages having drawn Carrigtwohill for the first round and winning that game on a scoreline of St Itas 2-16 to Carrigtwohill’s 0-12, however Castlemartyr proved too strong for us in the Quarter Final with a scoreline of St Itas 1-11 Castlemartyr 3-13. The lads dusted themselves off and put in a great effort in the league with a great campaign over the summer months. We played 8 games in the league, winning 5 and drawing 3.
St Itas 3-12 V Dungourney 1-18,  St Itas 3-14 V Bride Rovers 2-7,  St
Itas 3.18 V Carrig na bhFearr 3.15, St Itas 2.12 V Midleton 2.12, St
Itas 1-19 V Sarsfields 0-11, St Itas 5-13 V Youghal 1-7, St Itas 2.15
Vs Killeagh 2.15 and St Itas 3.14 V Cloyne 2.13.

This saw us through to a league final where we faced a strong and determined Bride Rovers on Sunday Oct 9th in Carrigtwohill. It was great to see Carrigtwohill’s pitch and fields all decorated with their colors after winning the County title. On the day Bride Rovers were just too good for St Itas with a final score of  St Itas 1-11 Bride Rovers 4-12.

Mayor calls for clubs and organisations to come together for 2013 Tourism Initiative to help Youghal prosper.

Mayor of Youghal Eoin Coyne: " I look forward to welcoming you to the Town Hall on the 30th of November 2011"

Mayor of Youghal Eoin Coyne: " I look forward to welcoming you to the Town Hall on the 30th of November 2011"

THE MAYOR OF YOUGHAL, EOIN COYNE, would like to extend an open invitation to all clubs (sporting and otherwise), associations, voluntary organisations and interested members of the public within the town of Youghal to attend an information meeting in relation to Ireland’s 2013 tourism initiative titled “The Gathering”, which takes place in the Mall Arts Centre, Youghal Town Hall on Wednesday the 30th of November at 7.30pm.

The Gathering, which was announced by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar, is being labelled as a global Irish “homecoming” which has been billed as the biggest tourism initiative ever staged in Ireland. The Gathering will be a year-long event in 2013 and the Government is anticipating it will attract as many as 325,000 extra visitors into Ireland. Minister for Tourism Leo Varadkar described it as an “invitation to the world to come and join in Ireland’s renewal”.

“It’s about getting communities, local authorities and sports clubs and families behind the whole concept, and getting actively involved and inviting people to come, and organizing specific events for that purpose”, said the Minister.

It is my hope that Youghal, as a community will take a unified approach in coming up with ideas and concrete plans into ensuring we prosper to our full potential from this initiative.

It is said that if the event can meet its targets it could be worth €220m in extra tourism revenue for Ireland. It is imperative that Youghal can as one whole community can work together in putting forward a cohesive plan that will enhance the town’s tourism potential and I believe that this is the perfect opportunity for us to achieve this.

It is my belief and my hope that EVERY organisation within the town will buy into this initiative and within five months, when “The Gathering” is due to be officially launched on St. Patricks Day 2012, we as a community, inclusive to all, can be steps ahead of other towns in Ireland in putting plans together for 2013.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Town Hall on the 30th of November next where I hope to explain in greater detail about what is hoped to be achieved. If you require any further information on this, please do not hesitate to contact me on e-coyne@hotmail.com alternatively, a quick internet search on “The Gathering, Ireland 2013” will provide you with all the information you need.

Eoin Coyne, Mayor of Youghal.

Flying Pigs Productions presents Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge, Cork Arts Theatre, November 30th – 10th December 2011. She’s Back And Bolder Than Ever!

MOTHER NATURE threw everything she had at Mrs Bob Cratchit in the ice storms last winter and still couldn’t take her out!  Directed by Tess Healy Maguire and produced by Flying Pigs Productions, Christopher Durang’s hit play Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge returns on Wednesday, November 30th, and will run nightly through Saturday, December 10th, at the Cork Arts Theatre.  Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge is a playful, skewed look at the Dickens classic Christmas tale where miser Ebenezer Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas.  In Durang’s version, the quietly suffering sainted Mrs. Bob Cratchit has been given one foundling too many and is determined to drown her sorrows then herself by leaping off the London Bridge.

Antoinette Hilliard as Mrs Bob Cratchit

Antoinette Hilliard as Mrs Bob Cratchit

Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge starts out with the familiar tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s visit from a Ghost.  From there, things start to go awry.  The Ghost’s magic is off.  Instead of the fateful hourly visits, Scrooge and the Ghost, pop in and out of time and place.  They end up haunting the beleaguered Mrs Cratchit who is now convinced they are voices in her head.

Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge peers behind the image of the poor-but-happy Cratchit family to reveal that Bob is really a bit of a nitwit and Tiny Tim is too good to be true.  The Ghost has a taser to help her tame the wayward Scrooge but he seems to be falling for the newly liberated Mrs. Cratchit.  Well meaning help from Clarence the Angel from Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life, television stars and Dutch tourists only complicate matters for the Ghost.  And then, there are still all the children …

Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge is part pastiche, part parody and all comedy.  It is an antidote for those who feel they too may drown in the syrupy schmaltz of the holiday season.

The cast includes:  Antoinette Hilliard, Una Ryan, Cian Daly, Patrick Gilley, Alan Riordan, Mark Cosgrave, John Ryan Howard, Judy Donovan, Tess Healy Maguire, Alex Murphy and a host of Cork’s finest young talent.

For more information, contact Tess Healy Maguire, Flying Pigs Productions, on 086 277 6029 or flyingpigsproductions@gmail.com.  For booking, contact the Cork Arts Theatre on 021 450 5624.
